7-Eleven getting comfortable with game sales
7-Eleven, bastion of the 2AM munchies, has announced plans to expand its video game offerings. The company's current stratagem is to offer seven titles over the holiday season (like Wrath of the Lich King, Fallout 3, CoD:WaW, Gears 2) "while supplies last." Depending on how things go, Sleven plans to have more titles beyond the predicted "hot-selling" games.
Though we're all for 7-Eleven carrying games, we're even more for it continuing to break street dates on blockbuster titles like Gears of War 2 and Lich King*.
*Yes, we realize in the case of Lich King it didn't mean much because the servers weren't up, but it's avoiding the midnight lines that counts.

Gotta love being able to grab a new game at 3 am if the mood hits ya.
Ves @ Nov 21st 2008 1:20PM
Yeah and some snack along with it.
Biff_McFresh @ Nov 21st 2008 1:07PM
This would officially make 7-11 the only store that needs to exist.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 21st 2008 1:18PM
Unless, of course, you wanted some kind of food that wasn't both unpalatable and 112% of your daily sodium intake...or coffee that doesn't taste like the beans were roasted in a flaming bag of dogshit.
7-11 is easily the worst convenience store I've ever been to.
Biff_McFresh @ Nov 21st 2008 1:22PM
They do carry muscle milk, water, and peanuts. So I'll live off that.
dubbz3030 @ Nov 21st 2008 1:23PM
Damn. i walked into a 7-11 this morning and saw their little Rack of Games with COD:WW, GOW 2 ++
that shit is funny
Dirty @ Nov 21st 2008 1:24PM
QT is so much better.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 21st 2008 1:26PM
Wawa rules the roost around here, with Royal Farms and Sheetz bringing up a close second.
Ben @ Nov 21st 2008 1:37PM
I wish there were some Sheetz around Philly, but at least there's still Wawa (which is still better than Sheetz anyway). 7-11 is consistently the dirtiest store I've ever been in, no matter which one I go in. And I agree with bst, 7-11's coffee does taste like flaming turds.
mernmern @ Nov 21st 2008 1:41PM
God I miss WaWa. 7-Eleven continues to put up signs stating when games will be available, however the people in the store have no idea what I mean when I ask for one. Great system. Well done.
BananaBoat @ Nov 21st 2008 2:19PM
Selling games in a convenience store just makes SENSE. What other store has that type of loss-prevention security in place? Who is going to steal a game and risk Apu jumping over the counter, shotgun in hand, ready to blast your ass over a 60 dollar video game? Nobody, that's who.
Dirty @ Nov 21st 2008 1:07PM
Also I can imagine the install for lich king was at least a bit lengthy, getting it out of the way early was probably nice.
I dont play WoW so I am basically talking out of my ass here. Ill just continue singing... everybody needs a second chance... you wanna piece of my heart.
Wiinterfang @ Nov 21st 2008 1:18PM
7/11 went Bankrupt in my country, they had all the stores replace and I mean all the 50+.
Mike @ Nov 21st 2008 1:18PM
Broken street dates and Slurpees - what more could you ask for?
Duke @ Nov 21st 2008 1:23PM
Some frito's please!
shannon @ Nov 21st 2008 1:52PM
dang... add some chili and cheese to those fritos and you got yerself a frito pie!! damn i miss sonic.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 21st 2008 1:24PM
Ugh, just seeing those cups reminded me not only of the ad for the Guitar Hero meal at Kentucky Fried Chicken I saw yesterday, but the refreshing feeling that I got out of the franchise just before it truly jumped the shark (which was about 5 minutes after playing the Pontiac Vibe stage on GHIII).
DivinedSin @ Nov 21st 2008 1:25PM
This makes sense cuz the CEO of 7-Eleven, Joseph DePinto, used to be prez of GameStop. He left GameStop and went to 7-11 back in 2005, though. So, I wonder what took so long?
DivinedSin @ Nov 21st 2008 1:27PM
If they ever do decide to honor a street date, a 7-11 line would be the easiest line to wait through ever. You have everything you need from Red Bull (to keep you awake) to a pack a cigs (to take the edge off of the stupid people in said line).
Biff_McFresh @ Nov 21st 2008 1:36PM
And how can you forget malt liquor? To make the inevidably ugly chick or two in line that much less appalling.
Jakka ( The Order of Haters of Balance) @ Nov 21st 2008 2:21PM
There are no girl gamers, that "ugly chick" is just a regular nerdy guy.
No more malt liquor for you...
Obie @ Nov 21st 2008 1:40PM
Awesome, I mean what is better, I can grab a game, a slurpee and some combo's.
And the great thing about 7-11 employees is they don't give a damn, they just want their shift to move faster, so they will sell ya any game, even break street dates. And they sure as hell wont try and sell ya magazines or pre-orders.
danny. @ Nov 21st 2008 1:44PM
I grabbed the new COD at 7-11. I didn't even know I wanted it.
J Snazz @ Nov 21st 2008 2:07PM
Yeah I would avoid 7/11. I bought madden there, game was scratched from the start. Small scratch that caused the game to freeze occasionally. I went into the store 3 freaking times to get another copy and they never gave me one. They even took my "Info" down.
"I can't do anything I need the day shit guy"
"I cant' do anything I need the manager"
"I can't do anything until our supplier comes in on wed, let me take your number"
Biff_McFresh @ Nov 21st 2008 2:30PM
That night shit guy was lying to you.
J Snazzy @ Nov 21st 2008 2:47PM
haha Whoops
Kamizar @ Nov 21st 2008 2:53PM
Great now I can pick up new AAA games as I rob them...
FSK405K @ Nov 21st 2008 3:20PM
Ya but they pissed me off Monday night. I went to FIVE 7-11s nearby, only two of which had games, and neither of which had Left 4 Dead.
RabbidMickeyMouse @ Nov 21st 2008 5:54PM
I think its great that people will be getting more day to day exposure to videogames on the shelves.
It's one thing for them to be sold at retail stores, but they're huge and require you to find what you're looking for. With this, you're now more likely to see videogames when buying gas, on your way through, which is what something needs if more people think videogames are primarily for nerds, shut-ins what have you.
Fakeplasticball @ Nov 21st 2008 7:23PM
7-11 is getting the excellent street cred of having the game early. If so then why go to Gamestop for a preorder.
Gamestop VS 7-Eleven FIGHT!!!
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Nov 21st 2008 9:32PM
That isn't even a fight: one has great street cred, the other one has lost a lot of respect.
