I'm using HDMI, and everything works fine EXCEPT Netflix movies that are "Presented in HD", those I get no sound on! The non-HD Netflix movies work perfectly, along with everything else. Crazy and frustrating.

For those of you still having this problem (myself included in that) hold down Right Trigger and the Y button while you 360 is booting up. It will cause it to reboot and when the dashboard comes back up you should have sound.
Not a perfect workaround, but a bit easier for the lazy folk like myself who can't be bothered to re-seat the HD or muck with the HDMI cable.

This is an isolated problem, it doesn't happen with all HDMI. The problem primarily occurs with people who are using computer montiors with HDMI. These monitors have cheap built-in speakers if they have speakers at all, and don't handle sound the same way as a television set which is causing the problem. It's disappointing because the audio worked perfectly fine before the update, which leads me to believe that a fix would be simple and painless

I've found that if I hold the sync button on front of the console while powering it on, audio returns for that session. Very irritating. Hope this gets fixed ASAP. :|

I am using HDMI on a Vizio 32" tv from a Premium console and have had no issues with sound. (knock on wood) I am using a Belkin 3' PureAV HDMI cable.

My center channel doesn't work over hdmi, so something is fishy here. I hooked up my Optical out instead and now i'm golden.

Hello, I have the same problem as you. Yesterday I did the update and since then, no more sound. My xbox is plugged with my IIyama screen via HDMI. I hope that M$ fix it soon.

And I now have no sound. I don't understand how this can be isolated??

Got the problem too: had my Xbox connected with VGA and optical audio; now sound only works if i select 'stereo'. Digital doesn't work anymore (only if I watch a DVD movie and then only on the center channel. The rear speakers become the front speakers). very annoying!

I been useing the NGE since its release, Up until today, Thanksgiving, there was no problems, until I got done watching Star Wars Ep IV because i got this new Limted Edition box set, I felt like playing Lego star wars, I booted up my console...no sound. I thought "oh the HDMI cables in my 43' Westinghouse must be acting up" I unplugged my TV waited 10 seconds, rebooted it, and nothing, NADA, I booted up my PS3, it had sound, I turned on my Blu-ray player, Sound, I put in my HDMI upconvert DVD player, Sound, I plugged in my Cable Box via HDMI, Sound (i switch between it and DVD player) But when I booted up my 360, No sound, I fumbled with the sound settings, nothing, I did the HDD temp fix, Nada, I even did the initial set up again, nothing. I think the problem doesn't arise for people until they use the NGE long enough, possibly it will mess with the HDMI sound. Im soooo pissed i have to downgrade slightly to a Component cable.

My sound is out after the update. But it works with the component
cables. The harddrive fix works but you have to put in each time you
start the unit. If you pull the harddrive and update a 256 memory
card it works.... but when you put the hard drive back in no
sound...the only thing i havent tried is formatting the hard drive
but i dont want to loose all my saved games

My sound works fine for games but not for downloaded videos, Netflix, TV shows, etc. The problem comes and goes and I have no idea why. For whatever reason, the Terminator 4 trailer always works.

I am having this problem with a BRAND NEW arcade console. Console was manufactured on November 9th 2008. Bought it yesterday November 18th 2008. Brand new xbox 360 monster hdmi cable and brand new Toshiba 40" 1080p full hdtv only 4 days old. Put my old hard drive in from broken premium system. Tried hard drive trick and didnt work. Adjusted hdmi settings in every way possible on both xbox and tv. Wiggled hdmi cord around when xbox was starting. What's weird is it HAS worked a couple of times out of the hundred times that i tried and i turned xbox off right away and back on and WALAA no SOUND :|. NOTHING WORKS not even the hold right trigger and y trick. Xbox just restarts when i put the hard drive back in doing the hard drive trick and also restarts holding right trigger and y!

I have this problem and hate the idea of having to remove and insert my hard drive every time I want to boot with HDMI. I have a feeling this could be a long haul in the testing department as it affects people with certain TVs. Mine is a brand new Toshiba 40" 40RV525U and is connected to a 360 pro using a Monster HDMI cable. Is there anything coming down the road for this or is MS just hoping it'll go away and the users with problems will stick to component and forget about it??

i have had this sound issue it is a problem with the 360 not detecting your tv as a tv but as a monitor so it gives the monitor resolution and no sound (cuz most monitors dont have sound) its a pain in my ass but till M$ fixes it im SOL oh and dont do the HDD thing it screwed me over and gave me the symptoms of RROD but not the lights and when i went to give it the RROD it fixed itself by resetting. Just hold Y+Rt while booting its much safer and wont mess with your tv settings ( resetting the tint and such without moving the sliders)

I found that turning the TV off and on again solved the issue for me, though it does not solve the problem.

I'm having this issue with Xbox 360 -> HDMI -> Toshiba 40RV525U.

Microsoft is pushing two months without fixing this issue.

I just upgraded to an elite about a week ago, and it HAD been working just fine. Awesome picture, and sound. Tonight, while in the middle of a game the sound went out. Plugged it in to my stereo receiver with the optical cable, and it has sound. Nothing through the HDMI though... guess I'll try the removing the hard drive trick and see what it does.

well, tried the removing the hard drive trick, and the holding the right trigger and Y... neither worked. Still no sound with the HDMI cable. FYI, it's hooked up to a Samsung 48" LCD, not a computer monitor

(Jan. 16/'09) I have the same prob as everyone else, BUT I have a standard TV. Worked fine until the last Xbox Live update. My setup is to TV with supplied AV cord and to Logitech Z-5500 Digital surround system, with toslink optical cord. Worked fine for a week and then BLAM! Died right in the middle of Fallout 3! Damn! Anyone heard if Microsoft has a fix yet?

Same problem, no sound using HDMI on an elite and a samsung T240HD. So frustrating as it was the only reason i bought the monitor was so i could play in 1080p. By the sounds of things this isnt going to be fixed, as surely by now it would have been. The fat cats at Microsoft really don't care about existing customers. This is why i have an apple computer and i swear now that i always will. I'm surprised i had not heard about the problem before i suffered from it myself. O well Ebay it is and PS3 here i come!

Didn't they fix that issue with the last update (very recently)... I haven't checked it myself, too lazy to swap cables again... But the display settings menu has changed... You don't longer have to choose the resolution, you only get the hdmi options

I sent my system back to Microsoft and they sent it back with the same problem. This is intolerable, and what's even worse, none of the game sites are covering the damn problem. I'm only finding it mentioned in forums. I've had to send in my system 4 times. i kid you not. When are we going to learn the corporations are not our friends?
