Update: Fitch caved in and signed the contract. Thanks to Scott for reading MMAJunkie.com.
Original Story: The Ultimate Fighting Championship has released welterweight crown contender Jon Fitch for refusing to sign his image rights away for a lifetime to UFC-based games being made by THQ. Fitch stated he thought it was "crazy" to sign "anything away for your lifetime." Fitch isn't the only one kicked out, as many of his teammates from the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose have been dismissed for refusing to submit.
We'll take this to mean that Fitch won't be appearing in THQ's UFC 2009 Undisputed expected in May '09. We know, all 10 of you out there who were going to buy the game and cared are devastated.

@Skyfire
You are the perfect example of the UFC Bandwagon fan that can't see through Dana White.
Every fighter hates how the UFC treats them. They are just quiet about it because they will get cut if it goes public. The ones who have established themselves are more vocal because they don't need the UFC anymore.

the real story is how the UFC needed to do this because EA is going to do an MMA game, and THQ needed the rights ASAP.

Yeah, I wonder where he got that cute anklet? Or maybe it's just a barbed wire ankle tattoo? Both are pretty cool, I guess...

The big reason the UFC and THQ wanted to lock up the lifetime rights to fighters in video games is because THQ got nervous that guys may appear in both their game and EA's rumored MMA game featuring Frank Shamrock. THQ didn't want that, and so they pressured Dana White to sign all the their fighters to an exclusivity in perpetuity contract regarding video game likenesses.

Uh, signing away image rights for a lifetime is nuts. But if not the UFC, where else are these guys going to fight?

This was about AKA's management, not the fighters and a video game agreement. But like the first poster said, this is now a non-issue.

Good job to the poster for alienating a decent percentage of his readers with comments like:

Come on, it's a joke. If MMA were more popular it'd be on network television (even NHL gets some air on NBC). And no EliteXC does not count. Since they are making a game out of it, someone expects it to sell more than 10 copies. If I liked fighting games, I'd check it out too, but that's one of the few things I'd rather watch than simulate.

Network television is the golden standard for sports. By definition they are the channels with the biggest possible viewership. That's why it was such a big deal when ESPN got MNF. Or why everybody was so mad when the Jets-Patriots game was on NFL Network for some odd reason, and then NFL.com collapsed under the weight of everybody who wanted to watch the game but didn't have the extended sports package (read: almost everybody). If you're not on network tv, you're not a big-time sport yet.

What's with the snide comment about only 10 people wanting this game?
On average approximately 500,000 people pay $50 every month to watch the pay per view.
The UFC is coming off their biggest pay per view ever, it is expected to have at least 1,000,000 buys.
Any UFC event that is broadcasted by SpikeTV is plastered with video game advertisements and commercials. The demographics are a perfect match, 18-34 years old and male.
Please don't diss the UFC.

Here comes the waah-mbulance. How many of those 500,000 people do you think read Joystiq? Of that subset, how many of those (the people who care enough about MMA to pay extra to watch it on TV) actually think that this game is going to be good and are going to go out and buy it? On top of that, how many of those people are going to be swayed by the absence of one fighter? Maybe 10? There you go.
I like MMA, but I think it'll be impossible to get a good approximation with a controller. There's just too many options, so it'll either be dumbed down or require extremely complex button combinations. For example, if you're on top on the ground, how do you differentiate between wanting to strike or wanting to go for a submission, and then beyond that, how do differentiate between striking with each limb or between going for arm bars, triangles, kimooras (sp?), leg bars, ankle locks, etc. all in real time? Not to mention just trying to advance your position, such as a guard pass or side mount. Quickly switching tons of modifier buttons is going to get old fast, but sequential decision making would kill the pacing, like VATS for MMA. Sure not every move is a good idea at all times, but the option should be available if you think you see an opening, and if they try to make it contextual it'll just be too much hand-holding. So I'm not optimistic about this game, and am not one of the 10 who fit the above category.

Why is it that all of the people defending the UFC also have Mario avatars?? They must love Nintendo too...

Isn't that the default avatar here? Must be new profiles made by rabid fanboys of this "sport."

Yeah I don't care about this either...I don't care to watch a couple of sweaty, muscular "macho" men wrestle each other to the floor in a cage while others look on. It's weird. Boxing is pretty boring as well.
