Debut Wanted trailer curves its way into our hearts
Those among you who saw Wanted in theaters probably spent most of the 110-minute bullet-fest wondering how well the game would hold up when it made its seemingly inevitable journey to the Land of Licensed Video Games. Your inquisitive mind may have been eased by reading our glowing write-up of our time with the game at E3 earlier this year -- then again, you've never been much of a reader, have you? You're probably not even reading this right now, meaning we can call you a stupid jerk without fear of repercussion. Here goes -- you're a stupid jerk.
If you are still with us, we apologize for needlessly insulting you, and offer you the debut trailer for Wanted: Weapons of Fate (posted after the jump) as a humble peace offering. It is proudly NSFW, and chock-full of awesome -- though it is sorely lacking in Morgan Freeman appearances. Looks like we'll have to wait for Bungie's upcoming adaptation of The Bucket List to fulfill that particular fancy.

there's no way they'll be able to pull off a good bullet curving mechanic
J @ Nov 22nd 2008 1:00PM
why would a shooter even need it? why can't we just wait for enemies to stick their heads out of cover and then shoot them... like we've been doing. Will the enemy be hiding behing a wall the whole time? seems so gimmicky. I haven't seen the movie though, so maybe there are good examples of when it's actually useful. Otherwise, seems like it's just something flashy.
I understand how these assassins are supposed to be the best and can do anything, but it doesn't mean they have to. If they can curve bullets and hit a target, they should be able to just as easily headshot everyone everytime with every shot. Makes me think of fracture with its terrain deformation weapons. Why can't u juse nuke the land to make it sink below sea water? Or Prince of persia's new friend who saves him from falling to his death. Why can't she just fly him to his destination?
The visuals for this game do look impressive though.
JetPogi @ Nov 22nd 2008 1:15PM
this is a reply to J:
that's like asking why do they have to put chainsaw on the GeOW lancers? Why use lightsabers instead of guns? because its sci-fi things don't have to make sense
DemonGSides @ Nov 22nd 2008 1:54PM
J: stop overthinking it, asshole. ITs called FUN, its what most of us want from a video game, not realism.
Zach S @ Nov 22nd 2008 2:18PM
They don't need to make sense- they just need to be BADASS
BlaqueBeird @ Nov 22nd 2008 3:12PM
If logical were more important than awesome, I'd give up.
Penguin Warlord @ Nov 22nd 2008 5:42PM
Why does Mario have to eat mushrooms to grow big? Why can't he just spend several years undergoing several painful and experimental surgeries, combined with large amounts of weight training and dieting?
Why does family guy have to be funny? Why can't it just portray a real life family that goes about their business focusing on life's mundane tasks?
What a foolish comment to make. I just shake my head at you.
WiredKnight @ Nov 22nd 2008 5:54PM
I'm skeptical as well. In that shot above, and in most shooters, a straight shot works fine in most situations. They'll have to do two things to get this game right.
1. Present opportunities for bullet curving in ways that don't make them feel forced or contrived. It always sucks when games introduce new ideas and then construct situations that seem tailored just to show them off. It's unnatural and gimmicky.
2. Make bullet curving intuitive and relatively easy to pull off. If they don't, people aren't going to use it. If players can kill people as they normally would more easily than using bullet curving, a huge part of the gameplay's appeal is going to be kicked aside.
Titanium_Orchid @ Nov 22nd 2008 6:55PM
@JetPogi
In the Gears universe, chiansaws are apparently pretty sharp and efficient at cutting, so putting them on the end of a gun makes sense. Its a good way to cut through thick armor and bone.
Why use a light saber instead of a blaster? What would you rather have, a gun or a weapon that can block lasers?
I don't understand why there is such a backlash against J's statement. Its perfectly reasonable.
I agree with J and WiredKnight, in that this feature seems kind of gimmicky and somewhat redundant. I won't have a problem if its implemented well... but that still remains to be seen.
J @ Nov 22nd 2008 11:21PM
yay... i invoked a discussion, and even got called an asshole by an asshole.
my job is done here. or is it...
chainsaw is like a bayonet, good for closed quarter combat. It isn't redundant. light sabers are star wars' version of a sword... but it can cut through swords, only jedi knights can use it, and it can deflect lasers, which is why they DON'T use both a light saber AND a laser gun. But to curve your bullet to hit someone who's NOT EVEN BEHIND COVER is POINTLESS, like using waggle to replace a button, and UNLIKE using a chainsaw or a light saber. Now if the enemy needs several headshots to die, and the bullet can drill through the head then u-turn and drill through it again several times, that's useful.
Now let me tell you how it can work. If they give you points for style. Cause it's definitely stylish.
Penguin Warlord, those were horrible examples. Eating a mushroom is a faster way for Mario to grow. It makes sense to do that, while the alternate method is more arduous. If i were to use your analogy, SHOOTING STRAIGHT at someone who's NOT behind cover would be using the mushroom. Curving the bullet needlessly would be spending "several years undergoing several painful and experimental surgeries, combined with large amounts of weight training and dieting"
"why does family guy have to be funny?" THAT'S THE PURPOSE OF THE FUCKING SHOW, which i happen to love. That would only be equivalent to "why do assassin's kill?", while "WHAT does family guy DO TO BE funny" corresponds to "WHAT do assassins do TO KILL?"
Curving a bullet would correspond to the methods family guy uses to be funny, except, what family guy does to be funny is more effective than alternate methods, while curving a bullet is NOT more effective then shooting straight, at least in the examples we've been shown.
and finally, yours truly, demongsides, i'm not against fun or am I DEMANDING realism. Where did I argue that its lack of realism is the problem?! Bullet time in max payne is NOT realistic, but it sure as hell was fun, ANNNNNNNNNNNND USEFUL. What about resistance and it's wide variety of unrealistic but FUN and USEFUL weapons. You fail, because you argued that i'm for realism over fun, which had NOTHING to do with what I said. HERE'S ANOTHER GOOD EXAMPLE, the portal gun in... Valve's portal game. It IS NOT a gimmick because you can't even beat the first level withOUT it. And it sure as hell isn't realistic... but again, i'm not against that, like your dumbass thought i was.
The only person who disagreed with me AND made any sense was zach s. Everyone else who happened to disagree were full of non sequiturs. You dumb fucks make me embarrassed to be a gamer.
Thanx wiredknight, and titaniumorchid.
J @ Nov 22nd 2008 11:23PM
err... just wanna make it clear i'm thanking wiredknight and titaniumorchid for defending me. I wasn't calling THEM dumbfucks. ;)
herozero @ Nov 22nd 2008 11:56PM
Well, the reason why they do the bullet curving thing is because that's what they did in the movie. It's as simple as that. With everyone else dead except for Wesley... they had to keep something.
JetPogi @ Nov 23rd 2008 3:58AM
@ J
The only thing I'm saying is that they put the curve shots there to entertain. Just like chainsaw is to lancer and lightsaber is for Jedi's. And I'm not hating on Gears mind you I just got my hoard
achievement today :). Besides this game would be pretty generic with just shooting there won't be any thing going for it.
Also the bullet do go to where you aim it(at least I think it does), it simply avoids the wall/civilian so your bullet isn't wasted.
DemonGSides @ Nov 23rd 2008 3:32PM
They showed you a damn good reason for bullet curving right there; going around obstacles, such as Non Combatants, to lower the civilian damage.
You're an idiot, and arguing a point that has no real foundation. Its a mechanic that could be fun to play around with. Just because you don't understand how it can be fun doesn't mean its not.
nickels @ Nov 22nd 2008 12:34PM

Potential.
That quick little fight scene looks like it could be quick time events. Bah, if so, bah.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Nov 22nd 2008 1:15PM
Well what's wrong with QTE? If they're done well (i.e. God of War) then what's the harm?
Levi @ Nov 22nd 2008 1:31PM
I never thought they were good. In any game. I feel like if you are going to do some cool sweet execution, there should be a button combination that isn't specific to that event, or randomized. It should be moves or combinations of moves that are difficult to master, therefore creating a sense of accomplishment. I think QTE's take away from the gameplay. When I play games like God of War, I don't want to play Simon Says minigames to see my character beat the crap out of someone, I want to ACTUALLY BEAT THE CRAP out of someone.
QTE's are like everything that's wrong with the Wii, minus the waggling.
Bowser the Baptist @ Nov 22nd 2008 1:53PM
"QTE's are like everything that's wrong with the Wii, minus the waggling."
I have a headache so I can't gather my thoughts real straight today, but I'm pretty sure you're wrong on this point, and on QTEs as a whole.
If used in moderation, QTEs can show off feats which would be simply impossible in a most in-game engines. Is it lazy? Probably. But is the visual payoff worth it? If stylised, I'd say so. And anyway, I have a sneaky suspicion that many developers are wannabe film directors. Why would you take away their fun?
"QTE's are like everything that's wrong with the Wii, minus the waggling."
Actually, I will say one thing: the Wii has saved modern gaming from eating itself. Without the Wii and without Nintendo, this generation would be a hell lot less interesting for many a person.
If it wasn't for the Wii we'd still be in a teenage wasteland, a poorer landscape, especially when you consider how Sony have abandoned what made the PS2 so popular in favour of shootan.
Levi @ Nov 22nd 2008 2:33PM
QTE's are just cheap cop-outs of poor excuses of gameplay. If you want to show a quick scene of something happening, then show the scene. To try and say throwing a ridiculous or sometimes random button combination on-screen makes the short cinematic more involving or interactive is just crazy. I know hitting buttons isn't really close to the actions on-sceren during normal gameplay, but at least you know that a=jump, b=shoot, for example, when in QTE's, they mean nothing. It's Simon Says in Resident Evil. It's Simon Says in GoW. I hate them. They piss me off so much. I jsut wish they'd show the quick scene and get on with the real gameplay.
The Wii comment I think might have been taken wrong. I meant that the Wiimote is not utilized in a meaningful way far too often, and QTE's feel like those moments. Wii also has a zillion too many minigames, and I was paralleling QTE's to said minigames. Sorry for not clarifying in my original post.
Haggard @ Nov 22nd 2008 4:26PM
Bowser is right in part, QTEs when done right can make your character (e.g. Kratos in God of War) pull off insane feats which are presented in a spectacular fashion.
However, when they're done like Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy (and probably Heavy Rain too), where towards the end of the game you have to press complex button sequences in order to stop yourself breathing too loudly, and for over-long 6 minute fight seqences or totally mundane activities, then QTEs are just a cop-out annoyance.
Jakka ( The Order of Haters of Balance) @ Nov 22nd 2008 5:42PM
I side with Levi. QFT's are usually an indicator that the game's audience has too much ADD to sit through a cut-scene.
Also when pulling off a QFT, you're too concentrated on buttons to actually looks at the background so the entire "Rule of Cool" Insane Feat argument can go f/ itself.
The only time timed events are semi-acceptable is when they come single button based and as an actual combat mechanic. Two Thrones and it's stealth kills system pulled it off well enough imo.
WiredKnight @ Nov 22nd 2008 6:08PM
@Bowser:
"If used in moderation, QTEs can show off feats which would be simply impossible in a most in-game engines."
What on Earth are you talking about? Most QTE's ARE performed in-engine.
Bowser the Baptist @ Nov 23rd 2008 5:23AM
Wired: I don't have the gaming vocabulary. Real time vs QTE. Is that any better?
Xoviet chiK @ Nov 22nd 2008 1:05PM
I'm guessing this is no longer a downloadable, episodic game?
Hashbrown Hunter @ Nov 22nd 2008 1:14PM
I don't believe it was ever planned to be episodic or downloadable. Maybe you're thinking of the Watchmen game.
OMGOMG @ Nov 22nd 2008 1:24PM
No, OP was right. It was planned on episodic. I totally remember reading that.
Xoviet chiK @ Nov 22nd 2008 8:46PM
I could have sworn it was both of them, but it appears you are right. Totally got it confused with Watchmen. I think they were both shown off on the same comic-con episode of GTTV or both begin with W, or are both based on films based on comics/graphic novels... Oh well. :P

I've never read the comic. I've never read the movie. I've always wanted to bend bullets. Sure.
Amirisme @ Nov 22nd 2008 3:49PM
I get to bend bullets? SOLD!
JawKnee @ Nov 22nd 2008 4:14PM
The game looks a hell of a lot better than that shitfest of a movie ever did. That being said most of that looked like cutscene's, and I'm betting curving bullets will be handled in a similar manner to VATS in Fallout 3. That level in what looked like a skydiving airliner looked pretty cool though.
Mister Servo @ Nov 22nd 2008 5:18PM
I'm guessing bullet curving will be on a special timer that you can only use for a set amount of time. Kind of like bullet time in Max Payne or something to that effect.
Kind of looks interesting, I guess the fact that they didn't rush the game out to be released with the movie or DVD is somewhat promising.
philmcphail @ Nov 22nd 2008 8:38PM
Intriguing...
evan @ Nov 22nd 2008 10:32PM
There's a MUCH better trailer for this game on the Hellboy II DVD that shows a lot of gameplay footage, not just cutscenes, and when watching that trailer, I didn't even realize it was a game based on the movie Wanted, it just looked like a badass game.
That said, from what I could tell of the trailer on the DVD, the bullet curving mechanic seems to be fairly unlimited and pretty intuitive. I'm hoping this game breaks the mold for movie-to-video game conversions. That is to say, let's hope it doesn't suck.
VicViper09 @ Nov 23rd 2008 1:00AM
"OH! theres ninja standing behind that lady and baby, I'll whip-shot (or whatever they call it, i haven't seen the movie) my gun and curve a bullet around her and her babys face instead of takeing a step to the side and just take aim and shoot."
I know that idea of controlling ur bullets may sound cool, but if its as gay as just curving it in front of people faces and making innocent people shit themselves, I'm not impressed.
J @ Nov 23rd 2008 10:45AM
lol " curve a bullet around her and her babys face instead of takeing a step to the side and just take aim and shoot."
exactly. someone give me an example of when it's practical to curve a bullet. Otherwise, you know what would also be badass... if he can use the pistol as a boomerang when the clips empty instead of reloading the gun. Why not?
How about changing the baby's diaper blind folded while throwing shurikens... with his feet.
Now something that's more useful is if he uses his extreme sense of his surroundings and pull off headshots through walls and other objects. Or curve a bullet so it'll fly through SEVERAL heads. For example, know exactly where to shoot the head that will make the bullet ricochet inside the skull and exit the skull and hit someone else's head. That will do more than simply curving a bullet. Also, the bullet moves so fast that no one can even appreciate how cool it looks when it curves to hit a target that isn't even behind cover!
oooo... u know which game used bullet curving ability. CLIVE BARKER'S JERICHO. and we all know how great that game turned out. the sniper can control where the bullet goes.

quasebrasileiro @ Nov 23rd 2008 1:26PM
Just watch the movie guys. He does exactly what you're saying, J. Assassinates a guy in an office building from around a corner, shoots someone on the other side of a moving train between the cars etc. In the final scene one shot takes out several people but I won't ruin the ending for you. Certainly not an Oscar winning movie or anything but it was a hell of a lot of fun. I DO have some reservations about a game based on it, though. I'll bet the game will overuse the bullet bending thing as I only remember it being used in ONE assasination in the movie. There was something in the movie that I hope makes it into the game also- extreme long range shots using multi-stage bullets. Shots would have to be timed so that multiple moving obstacles all lined up perfectly followed by an awesome visual.
Sion @ Nov 23rd 2008 10:31AM
Holy Crap It "Looks" Awesome.
Now If the Actually plays like that then we got something Here.
Service_games @ Nov 24th 2008 10:09AM
Really wish they would have based it on the Comic rather than the movie, but I liked the movie a lot, too. We'll have to see how well it turns out.
