More PlayStation oldies coming to PSN 'shortly'
Despite being overwhelmed with current releases and all their graphical bumpy maps, we do occasionally yearn for something a little more earnest and antiquated. This isn't a problem if you have access to the Japanese PSN, but browsers of the American PlayStation Store are unlikely to describe the pre-PS2 pickings as anything but "slim." With that in mind, MTV Multiplayer asked Sony's head of hardware marketing, John Koller, if more downloadable classics were on the way. "Yes, we are working on further PSone additions to the PS Store and should see those launch shortly," came the answer. Though we're left to wonder just how "shortly" that is, we've already assembled a list of our favorite PlayStation games. Won't you vote in our poll and tell us which one you'd like to see on PSN next?

I did like that Jedi Power Battles on the Dreamcast. Wasn't great but I didn't feel like I had wasted my time after. Fun little co-op game.
Never tried the PS1 version.
Tez @ Nov 23rd 2008 4:10PM
The PS version was horrible. The dreamcast one was okay, though.
Dahk @ Nov 23rd 2008 4:57PM
Actually I loved the PS1 version! (never had Dreamcast, sorry =/)
One of the best coop games back in the day, seriously. I still remember that insanely annoying coruscant, and the insanely cool mace windu - which was even cooler after Samuel L played it lol.
joeythehobo @ Nov 24th 2008 3:28AM
Dangit, I really would love to play Koudelka again...
Thanks for ruining my evening with wishful thinking, Joystiq.
Did noone else like that game...? =[
borland502 (SDF Macross) @ Nov 24th 2008 8:59AM
Did noone else like that game...? =[
I'll own up to liking it. The enemies were repetitive and it's the only game I've seen where you have to lose in order to get the good ending....
but it kept my interest enough to prompt buy-in to the Shadow Hearts series.
Titanium_Orchid @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:08PM
this poll is a joke, isn't it?
Gurbinder @ Nov 27th 2008 6:20PM
yeah it is. Wheres FF7? Theres a joke
LeadBoxx @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:09PM
I just downloaded War Hawk as I remember it being so awesome but it wasn't as good as I remember. I would like to see battle Arena Toshiden come out however.
SoulBlade @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:36PM
I second the Toshinden nomination
Sackolantern PSN ID: johnnynumber5 @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:45PM
BA:Toshinden was a great game on the PSX. One of my other favorite games had to be the TV watching Gex. My absolute favorite PSX game of all time was Tecmo's Deception: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tecmo%27s_Deception ... That Jedi power battles game in the list was also really fun though it was very difficult.
Nigeria @ Nov 23rd 2008 3:02PM
Man, Battle Arena Toshinden was terrible.
I remember having PS1 vs Saturn vs N64 arguments at school and we'd start comparing fighting games. There was always that one kid that brought up the Battle Arena games; even the Sony diehards sighed at that point.
Simpsons Wrestling wasn't that bad, it held my attention for an afternoon at least.
Vidikron @ Nov 23rd 2008 5:13PM
I really liked the BAT games. For their time I thought they were quite good. I mean, what else was there? I always hated the slow and floaty Virtua Fighter.
usagi704 @ Nov 23rd 2008 6:16PM
Trust me, Toshinden is also slow and floaty. You just don't remember because you haven't played it since then.
Yourself @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:10PM
Who would've thought 60+% of people around here read to the end of a poll before voting. As much as I'd like to ascribe it to a dearth of selection, that never seems to stop anyone in the Weekly Webcomic Etc.
KeenCommander @ Nov 23rd 2008 4:40PM
I read the end, I still voted for one of the other choices. What of it?
usagi704 @ Nov 23rd 2008 6:18PM
What of it? It means you have bad taste in games. That isn't a bad thing, but you do.
knor @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:13PM
man i used to have the die hard trilogy on the PS1, I'd totally consider buying it, only to not buy it in the end.
in fact, there are very few games from the ps1 that I would buy, namely Parasite Eve. mmm Parasite Eve.
Courtney @ Nov 24th 2008 11:59AM
Congratulations, Parasite Eve was the correct answer.
+1 to you.
dazn2341 @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:14PM
this is definitely joystiq bashing the ps3, i dont think they would make a joke poll about the original xbox like this. we all know the ps1 had an unbelievable game selection, so why make a joke about it?
brickwalker0 @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:19PM
or you could just take it as a general joke, not a ps3 joke.
DiL @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:19PM
i know totally. everyone knows that ps1 selection puts every other thing in the history of ever to shame
DangerMouse @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:24PM
So how are they bashing the PS3? Last time i checked, most of the games are over 10 years.
Maverick Saturn @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:42PM
How did you get to the conclusion of it being PS3 bashing :S
Last time I checked, the games hadn't released ON or FOR the PS3, so basically, they have no link with PS3 until they appear on PSN, how that equals PS3 bashing is beyond me.
BigD145 @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:47PM
Bashing the PS3 for no native backwards compatibility.
DangerMouse @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:50PM
Soul Reaver would be nice too. I had the game, but it got stolen years ago. The first Legacy of kain was another game i never got a chance to play.
Ranus Studios @ Nov 23rd 2008 3:44PM
This post is a joke, isn't it?
Mogster @ Nov 23rd 2008 3:50PM
My dear boy, this is a 'joke poll' because all the games on the list are quite terrible. It's got nothing to do with the PS3!
dwhite @ Nov 24th 2008 9:48AM
Hard not to be sarcastic when backwards compatibility was removed as a feature and now they want to charge for something like this in the PSN store. I thought Microsoft handled their issues badly, but compared to Sony right now they would make Ralph Nader proud.
Dalrint @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:23PM
Wait, are you saying people didn't like Koudelka?!
Levi @ Nov 24th 2008 12:23PM
I voted for Koudelka. Isn't it the first game from the same team that did the Shadow Hearts games? I remember the game getting positive reviews. It was unfortunately just another RPG that was unable to get out from under the shadow of Final Fantasy.
Dalrint @ Nov 24th 2008 1:17PM
Technically, it's the first Shadow Hearts game. :P
There are many references to it in shadow hearts 1, you even go to the monestary at one point, and a character from Koudelka shows up!
(I voted for it too...)
DiL @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:18PM
Simpsons wrestling... best. game. ever?
Maverick Saturn @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:19PM
Most if not all on that list sucked, lol
Saying that, the moment they release the likes of:
Abe Games
Final Fantasy Games
Parasite Eve
Dino Crisis 1 + 2
Silent Hill Games
Resident Evil Games
Omega Boost
and several others, I'm there in a flash.
Hyams @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:24PM
I'd forgotten all about the Abe games. They were awesome, even if they were so hard I never even completed the demo...
Maverick Saturn @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:38PM
The demo was completly different to the final product, I had the original and the demo that came with my PS1, played them both and the demo was different, the real game has more in it, and Exodus was and is still one of the most kick ass games I have ever played sitting right up there with the likes of GTA, Populous and a couple of others, no many times I have complete Abe, I can always replay it, it's a shame that same thing can't be said for a lot of the games that come out today, usually play through them once and don't wanna see them again.
The game I have possibly played the most in my lifetime is populous hands down, everytime I play it I do it differently, god I wish they could release a populous 2 :(
Slayer @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:45PM
Parasite Eve on psn would be fucking awesome.
Sackolantern PSN ID: johnnynumber5 @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:47PM
Tecmos Deception!
Maverick Saturn @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:48PM
Maybe square will release the old one with the new one coming out for PSP so we can backtrack :D
Haggard @ Nov 23rd 2008 3:53PM
The European selection is even smaller, so I'd wish for the good Spyro games, Crash 2 and so on.
It seems so odd that MGS1 isn't on there when they're still promoting MGS4.
psxman @ Nov 23rd 2008 4:31PM
I say, bring Tombi/Tomba to the PSN.
That game was awesome!
And it'd be excellent to pick-up-and-play for the PSP, so it's win:win.
I miss that pink hair.
Maverick Saturn @ Nov 23rd 2008 4:52PM
All hail Tomba! :D
Maverick Saturn @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:21PM
The first fighting force kicked ass, but only with multiplay, wouldn't be the same on PSP and PS3 if it doesn't have 2 player.
sicsided @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:57PM
Hell yeah. I would love a online and local multiplayer Fighting Force for the PSN
usagi704 @ Nov 23rd 2008 6:20PM
Fighting Force FTL!
Maverick Saturn @ Nov 23rd 2008 6:33PM
Eat my dust balls :P
Hyams @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:23PM
I actually quite liked the Star Wars Ep.1 game...
In other news: I'd like Final Fantasy 7 and 8. 7 because I've never played it, and 8 because my copy won't work on my PS3.
I suppose throw in Metal Gear Solid as well. I already own it, but I'm sure loads of others would want it. The origional Tomb Raider wouldn't be bad, too, if only for nostalgia reasons.
Maverick Saturn @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:40PM
Tomb Raider 2 + 3 should be added as well :D Those were the days, Tomb Raider isnt the same nowadays :P
I also remember Duke Nukem, but they plan on releasing that anyway, not to mention Exhumed and Life Force Tenka, two of the most original games I've played that don't involve aliens, germans or Iraqis, a trend that has picked up recently.
Jaclo @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:41PM
Final Fantasy VIII works fine on my system. Perhaps your discs are messed up?
Or...ah...do you have a model that isn't a 60 gig?
Whatever happened to Driver coming out on the PSN? It was announced a few months ago as coming soon, but it never came.
I too would like to see the Oddworld games. Maybe Incredible Crisis as well.
Maverick Saturn @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:44PM
Jaclo, dunno bout US, but driver is out over here in EU.
The game that inspired GTA to go 3D :D
I want FF8 :(
Hyams @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:45PM
Jaclo:
All PS3's can play PS1 games, regardless of model. Problem is, none of them can play FFVIII, due to the unusual copy protection the disc has.
There is a partial exception for the Platinum edition of the game, in that the first 3 (but not the 4th) discs work.
Which is a shame, 'cos I freakin' loved FFVIII. =(
