Joystiq Review: Left 4 Dead 1 Week Later

You know the basic premise, right? You and three other survivors are the last vestiges of humanity in the zombie apocalypse. You must battle the undead, escape to safety and try to figure out how repopulating Earth with three dudes and one lady won't be awkward.

"Campaigns take 1 to 2 hours to complete, depending on whether you use the 'destroy all zombies' or 'run like hell' strategy." |
There are four disaster scenarios in total, each of which plays out like a B-grade horror flick, complete with poster and closing credits. Each of the campaigns takes between an hour and two hours to complete, largely depending on whether you use a "destroy all zombies" or "run like hell" strategy. They each have their merits. (Note: Each campaign has about five checkpoint areas that you can start from if you're looking for a smaller session.)
That B-movie aesthetic is carried throughout with a faux-gritty world to fight through and music cues that alert you to the presence of the really bad zombies and fall just on the right side of cheesy.
Let me start big, then we'll talk specifics. If you have a few friends with the time to devote, you simply won't have a better multiplayer experience this year. There is nothing I've felt like the moment when my brother Griffin led a massive zombie away from the rest of us, sacrificing himself, so we could board a boat and get to safety. Nothing even comes close and that's one moment among many.
This is a game that has been built for teamwork, that rewards in a way few games have. For example, after Griffin's selflessness, the credits to our film began with a dedication to his memory. There are little touches like that throughout, teaching you to work as a team.

Though it's less teamwork focused, an alternate mode that lets you play as a zombie and basically grief the opposing force is a fine palate cleanser between levels. It's got less polish than the main mode, but it's a cool addition to an already superb package.
"Moreover, I'm a little concerned about the long term future of the game." |
But despite all the praise (and through no real fault of its own) it's tough for me to unequivocally recommend Left 4 Dead. For example, if you don't play games online, you should almost certainly avoid it. The single-player mode just doesn't feel right. And if you typically play games in small chunks (i.e. less than an hour) you're going to be leaving almost every full-campaign match midstream, which is pretty unsatisfying.
Moreover, I'm a little concerned about the long-term future of the game. It's great now, but when I pick it up in few months and friends have moved on, I'll still probably be able to get into a game, but I'm worried I won't find a good one, or one just getting started. This is one point though on which I really hope I'm wrong. My fingers are crossed that Valve will keep attention on L4D with the addition of some new weapons and more varied scenarios, one of the few areas in which it leaves a little something to be desired.
For now though, for today, if you've got time and a couple of buddies, you need to get this. I've played almost everything this holiday season, and a good Left 4 Dead match is one of the few experiences that will be added to the gamer vocabulary, a touchstone that no discussion of co-op gaming in the coming years will omit.

I agree. Valve has always been great about keeping on top of things most of the time. Look at TF2!
L4D will definitely be receiving some awesome updates soon, for sure.
ZaxCG2 @ Nov 25th 2008 1:37PM
I'm praying for more weapons. Thats the number 1 thing we need. After just a few hours of playing you may get bored with the weapon choice- Shotty, Auto-Shotty, SMG, Rifle, Sniper, Pistol, Dual-Pistols.
If you think of it, theres only really 3 types of gunnage- The Shotgun, The Machine Gun, and the Sniper... with the Pistols being last resort or used for picking off zombies from afar.
Knowing Valve, they'll hopefully be updating this within the next year.
For now, I'm usually doing one campaign online a night, throw in a few versus matches, and then I'm back to Team Fortress 2... WAY more weapon variety. :D
Schoon @ Nov 25th 2008 2:46PM
I agree. The last point I'll add to that is that Steam players seem to become *devoted* players of their game. I can easily see myself becoming a rabid Left4Dead player (oops - already have) and continuing to play frequently for months. And yes, I've noticed that there's only 8 "weapons". However, I find I take a different gun each time I come through depending on my team.
If they like running in and getting themselves killed: rifle or pistols for the accuracy at picking the undead off them like the remoras they are.
If they move more methodically like me, I stick with the SMG or assault rifle for damage at range and rate of fire. And style. Gotta have some flair.
Finally, the Counter Strike players... if my team just presses Jump-Crouch a hundred times, it's shotty-time. Gotta be ready for the inevitable horde when the Boomers and car alarms come...

The returnability (wow nice made-up word!) factor also depends on which format you bought, and believe the PC version would simply outlast the 360 purely down to the modding community.
I can see within 3 months of the Hammer update every major city having their own 'L4D real-mod' with the local modding community & game colleges trying to recreate their own 'spot', adding in back streets and areas not normally visited onto the landmark strewn 'end scenes' to help with the flow of the game.
This game format is better suited to this than any of the previous Valve games (although there was a pretty sweet Montreal mod made for HL2.), I can't wait to start making one for Birmingham UK.

Since I don't have money right now, I guess I'll be playing it 28 DAYS LATER than the release.

The games so realistic that I truely felt I was the Last Man on Earth.

Me and my friends got together to fight the ARMY OF DARKNESS in this game. It was truly epic.

I'm sorry but this comment was awesome. By far the best in this response thread.

I was really tied, but this game was so much fun I decided to Fargo sleep and keep playing.

What with all the DEAD SPACE in my room, this game sure did fill the void.

I hope this game rids me of my RESIDENT EVIL
gigatwo @ Nov 25th 2008 8:53PM
I'm glad I bought this for the PC. I wouldn't want to get THE RING.......... f**k, I can't do it.
quadraphonic @ Nov 25th 2008 12:36PM
I, too, wonder about the longevity of the game. My interest is already waning, and while great teammates make the game a blast, bad ones make it incredibly frustrating. Hopefully they'll open up the other two campaigns for versus play soon.
Marcus @ Nov 25th 2008 12:41PM
I'm sorry but the lack of and blandness of weapons really hurts this game.
Haggard @ Nov 25th 2008 12:45PM
The weapons feel very satisfying to use. The auto shotgun, assault rifle, and hunting rifle are all excellent - and I like how a key part of gameplay is timed usage of the melee attack (and that it saves your progress reloading if you melee halfway through).
I'm not entirely sure how much better plasma rifles and miniguns would make what is already an astounding game.
copa @ Nov 25th 2008 12:46PM
Like Gears of War 2, I consider this a game only to be played online, with friends.
I'll be getting a copy for myself and stocking-stuffers for my friends during the Black Friday sales. Then we can all go online and live the nightmare.
Lord Negatron @ Nov 25th 2008 12:58PM
Yep, The John Rambos (with no mic) that always go too far ahead only to get pounced on, tongue lassoed, or killed.
Orrr...
The perfectionist guy(with no mic) that wants to "stick around" making sure every zombie has been eradicated. Only to have more come, resulting in us running back to save them. *Especially if they are alive, near safe house, which is being flooded by a wave of undead at the moment...
:/
DWells55 @ Nov 25th 2008 1:09PM
Personally I'm rather disappointed in this game as far as $60 titles go. There's, what, 6 guns counting the pistols and four campaigns that are easily beat in around an hour a piece. That's four hours to finish the game. The single player and the online are basically the same thing and the game quite simply isn't fun unless you're playing with friends.
It's linear and, despite the AI director, each run-through feels the same. Sure, the enemy waves and special types might be different, but it's the same thing - point A to B, shoot everything as you go. If you beat a campaign once, you know exactly what to expect the next time through.
Don't get me wrong, I had fun playing through the four campaigns. But that took me under five hours and I've already finished all the original content in the game. So that's five hours and I'm without anything new to do or a particularly strong urge to redo what I've done. For a $29.99 Steam game or something bundled in with the next Orange Box, it'd be great, but for $60 I'm disappointed.
Long story short: fun game, great with friends, but not enough replay value to justify anything other than a rental.
Bass Masterson @ Nov 25th 2008 1:27PM
Welcome to Valve games. Of course you already paid the overinflated price, so Valve doesn't care that you think their game has no longevity.
BananaBoat @ Nov 25th 2008 1:31PM
Valve realized years ago with counter strike that people will play the same damn map over and over for years, and neglect all the others. Why would they make 10 levels, when people will only play DE_Dust?
That said, this is absolutely an online game. Without the terrified shrieks of "SHIT FUCK!" out of your friends over Xbox Live, or in person, the game is pointless. It's a great party game, but it's not Dead Rising (the best of all zombie games thus far IMO)
Haggard @ Nov 25th 2008 2:09PM
@Bass Masterson
I'm sorry, what? Your post is literally the exact opposite of what is true.
I picked up L4D for £20, £5 lower than other PC games (and £10 lower than CoD:W@W), and like TF2, new content is scheduled to be released completely free of charge.
I still play TF2 a year later and it's as good as ever, so you can pretty much GTFO.
Bass Masterson @ Nov 25th 2008 2:55PM
Welcome to the New World Order, where those who speak the truth will be silenced, and those who repeat the party line will be amplified. Valve Heil!
kaneda @ Nov 25th 2008 3:24PM
There is a word for people who substitute the word "truth" in place of the word "opinion". The word is 'idiot'.
Lord Negatron @ Nov 25th 2008 5:01PM
Bass Masterson
When hasn't Valve delivered? You people with this domination shit, need to lay off the bong and get a job. M$, Sony, Nintendo, they are successful companies that make money and?... Damn you Toyota,Panasonic, Disney, GEORGE FOREMAN!!! Damn you!
Before today's world wide web generation there was PC Gaming(online): MMO's , RTS, and Counter Strike/Rainbow 6 etc...
Valve is pretty consistent in what the do, so slow down there tiger.
Haggard @ Nov 25th 2008 6:25PM
@Kaneda
If that was aimed at me I can assure you the opposite of his opinions is true.
He claims Valve overcharge for their games - money is a quantifiable value and I definitely paid less for it than other games.
He claims they have no longevity - Valve have stated they will support the game with free content after release.
Haggard @ Nov 25th 2008 6:31PM
*sorry, didn't see Bass Masterson's use of 'truth', it was a bit difficult to see since the New World Order silenced it
Julio @ Nov 25th 2008 12:39PM
amen to what quadraphonic said... my only hope is that in a month or so people will be much better players and stop doing incredibly stupid stuff
danny. @ Nov 25th 2008 12:55PM
People looking to get achievements are frustrating (get them in single player please) so hopefully before long people will start focusing more on the actual game than burning witches, not healing, trying to get through with pistols, etc.
Doug @ Nov 25th 2008 7:07PM
Is that a witch? Let me check- OH FU--! ...poor Bill.
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 25th 2008 12:43PM
The game's a little too shallow for my tastes, with way too much emphasis on multiplayer. I'll probably rent it down the road though.
Haggard @ Nov 25th 2008 12:43PM
I think the constant new content is going to make my £20 definitely well spent.
Also, the versus mode is simply awesome.
TheHashishin @ Nov 25th 2008 12:51PM
valve has already confirmed downloadable content is in the works. they have been very vague about details but said it is going to be incredible. i would love to see some new weapons (flamethrower, anyone?), some new player skins, and definitely new maps/scenarios. i think a "dawn of the dead" inspired map would be great, you could make your way through suburbia and into the local mall where you would have to get through several levels to get evac. ah, i can dream, cant i?
really great 1 week later review. the game exceeded my expectations and you really have to have a full party of friends to get the most out of this brilliant game. i would have liked to read more about the difficulty levels cuz man...expert is just ridiuclous. anyone here finished any map on expert?
zkey14 @ Nov 25th 2008 1:10PM
I've finished No Mercy and Dead Air on expert, though I have to admit I was playing with friends and it took us like 10 tries to beat the final scenario of each.
michaelk.larrabee @ Nov 25th 2008 12:57PM
I love this game a lot and while it's great and all. I find the only real way to play it is with friends. Whenever I play on my own with strangers, something is just missing and not everyone is as chatty as they should be. Maybe since it's still new, there are many casual players that don't take the time to coordinate strategies. In TF2 there are a lot of serious people by now and everyone for the most part is on the same page. When I play with my friends though, Left 4 Dead really is one of those games that is giving us countless memorable moments. So much hilarity has ensued as we make it to the end of the level and then suddenly a horde appears and one of us takes the hit and screams to the others, "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! GO ON WITHOUT ME! LIVE! LIIVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!"
Zak Canard @ Nov 25th 2008 12:57PM
The PC version is definitely worth every penny due to inevitable user created levels alone. The XBox version on the other hand I doubt is worth it, as has so far been proved with the 360 Orange Box.
FSK405K @ Nov 25th 2008 5:27PM
I'm normally a KB+M advocate, but bought the 360 version because my laptop can only handle Fallout 3 on low graphical detail. So far, it is every bit as awesome as I have expected. I like KNOWING that everyone has a microphone, instead of the douches on PC who haven't bought one at all or use the one that's built into their monitor.
