Sega's clueless when it comes to the way they manage the Sonic franchise. Honestly, I think any of us here could do a better job. Don't they ever take suggestions? How many countless fans must have sent them e-mails over the years, how many game journalists have given them recommendations about how to approach future Sonic titles? The answer's simple, just look to the past--the most successful Sonic titles focused almost entirely on Sonic and him SPEEDING through unique levels at a break-neck pace.

The ridiculous "Warehog" levels are totally unecessary. I honestly think the only way for us to get a good Sonic game is to farm it out to a different developer, one that understands what made Sonic good in the first place. Sonic Team has totally lost touch, not to mention their Sonic titles have gotten more and more glitchy and unpolished with each new release.

** Keeps waiting for a good Sonic game **

There were very few levels in the Genesis Sonic games where you could speed through at a breakneck pace. Most of the games were spent doing some pretty involved platforming, pretty much exactly what the Werehog does.

And Sonic Unleashed is very polished. It almost shines.

Sorry, friend. I played and beat all the Genesis Sonic games, and virtually ALL of the levels involved lots of running fast and rolling through loops at Mach 2. Absolutely, positively NOTHING like lumbering around and brawling as a werewolf. Since when has a Sonic game ever had a punch button? I know you're trying to justify your purchase, but the fact is, this game is definitely strays from classic Sonic gameplay, and not in a good way.

Anyone else care to opine? Do any of the classic Sonic games have ANY stages or segments that resemble a brawler?

I was talking about the platforming, which is probably why I specifically mentioned the platforming. That aspect of the Werehog stages plays a lot like the classic Genesis games.

I also played and beat all of the classic Sonic games, and still do so on a regular basis. You can't dash through most of the game. It's physically impossible. Except in any zone with the "Hill" in its name and the Chemical Plant zone. That's pretty much it. Everywhere else, you were hopping from floating platform to floating platform, dodging spike traps shooting up from the ground and waiting on massive pistons to get out of your way.

I cant imagine what is discussed in these Sega production meetings when it comes to Sonic.

Did they really think that making sonic turn into a Werewolf type creature, and put him in a Non-Sonic type game play environment was the solution?

I had an idea that the Wii version would be better received, though in this case it's better received BECAUSE it's gimped, namely because they took out the full-scale overworlds, which were an annoyance in Sonic Adventure as they were, having 7 of them would be worse

However, it's a recommendation for whatever platform you have, i think, especially if buying Secret Rings isn't possible. The Sonic stages give the same exhilaration of speed that Secret Rings did, and much like Secret Rings, it's speed with a purpose. Dodge stuff and platform at high speed, much like the original game was. The werehog levels are quite fun because they do incorporate a lot of platforming elements, and they kept the combat nice and simple

by the way, the original game was about Dodge stuff and platform at high speed? Tell Marble Zone that. And while you're at it, tell labirinth zone, scrapbrain, starlight... anyway, you're wrong. BTW I have a wii, and only a wii, so i'm not your enemy.

To be honest I like most Sonic games except for 3D blast (We know is Flicky 3D Sega you are not fooling anyone) Shadow (Obvious reasons) and Sonic for teh xbaucks and Ps3 because the camera was friggin bad, ignoring that (And the framerate issues) is not a bad game.

The only problem with this one are the friggin controlers. The same problem that stops me from playing Secret rings.

...And the mainstream Sonic hate continues. Seriously, SEGA deserves better than this. Sonic Heroes was actually fun, if not more fun than Sonic Adventure 1 and 2.

Seeing reviews like this blasting the game and not even giving it a chance (sites are probably too busy playing Halo and Gears of War 2 to even care about this game) makes me want to punch them in their face. I'm not a crazy fanboy, but I like Sonic, and it saddens me to see this blatant bias and hate in the mainstream gaming media against anything and everything Sonic. It just feels like the entire gaming media gave up after SEGA went software-only and after Sonic Adventure 2 was released. News flash: there are actually good Sonic games after Sonic Adventure 2! Joystiq seems to be completely ignoring the release of Sonic Heroes (which has garnered average to above average reviews, and Gamespot gave the game an 8, which is surprising given how harsh they are on games).

I feel like Sonic gets unjustly treated in comparison to Mario, who gets the royal treatment no matter what. Whenever Mario does something new, like Mario Kart, everyone praises Nintendo. When SEGA tries a similar path and creates Sonic Riders, everyone slams it to the floor and doesn't give it a chance. Reviews shouldn't impact how a game sales, it should be the consumer's opinion that matters. If you like the game, you enjoy it. If you hate it, that's fine. But totally bashing a game just because of the name relation (Sonic) is unjust and just proves how worthless professional reviews are in gaming today.

SEGA needs some actual encouragement from the fans themselves that this Hedgehog Engine is the way to go, and that the next game should be built upon this engine. It fixed most, if not all the problems that previous Sonic 3D games have had in design (camera problems, etc.), and SEGA should make another Sonic game. SEGA shouldn't listen to these reviewers, and keep making Sonic games that they know both the new and old Sonic fan will like, despite reviews. Now, I know I will probably get blasted for this, but this is the truth, and if you aren't willing to accept the truth, then go somewhere else and whine and complain about how Sonic still sucks. Because I've had it with this blatant hate, both on this site and any other site. What's next, a "Top 10 reasons why Sonic Sucks" article? Joystiq as a whole hates Sonic, and whether it be on this article, or even on unrelated articles, they always find a way to bash the blue hedgehog. Pretty pathetic if you ask me. Why don't they write a whole "why we hate Sonic" article, to explain this blatant bias? Oh wait, they won't because they are cowards. Oh well, I'll go to another site for my gaming news.

I don't think joystiq necessarilly (sp?) hates Sonic. I agree with you on pretty much everything else though. Sonic does get unfair treatment from the media and as a fan of both Sonic and Mario I can quickly name more games that Mario had that sucked compared to Sonic. Mario is missing anyone? How about Mario teaches typing or all of the Mario party games after 3? People should stop bashing sega for trying new things with their characters. I mean it's not like Sonic has ever strapped on a water pack and fought pollution, tried going into the hotel business, or taught picross. Picross guys seriously... that's like Megaman teaching damn sudoku.

...Okay, what the hell.

Sonic Unleashed has a small problem (I put up with Tails and Eggman in SA2, I think I can deal with the Werehog just fine), but it hasn't sunk much from it's best. The Werehog doesn't look THAT bad (besides, since when was it ALL ABOUT SPEED??), I personally liked the sandbox gameplay of Sonic Adventure DX.

BRAWL. BRAWL?
Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Nice game, looks pretty, lotsa' characters, lotsa' stages, this game is so great, blah blah blah.
SSBB is NOTHING compared to Melee in a lot of senses. It's glitches are probably as abundant as its song count, the physics engine was slowed down for the newbies, THIS GAME WAS OVERHYPED EVEN WORSE THAN HALO 3!

...No, I take that back.
Now, don't get me wrong. I like Brawl, but the only reason I'm still actually playing it is because I have the ability to play online whilst talking to friends (via Skype), and, quite frankly, that never gets old.

I am NOT a Sonic fanboy in any meaning of the word. Heroes? Only O.K. Not a worthy buy. Shadow the Hedgehog? Wasn't completely horrible, but GOD DANGIT, THEY SCREWED UP SHADOW. I like Sonic Adventure (despite the "WE'REGONNACRASH. AAAH."), and I enjoyed Sonic Adventure 2 (it was so much more epic when I was a kid....).

...Also, where is Knuckles? I mean, I'm GLAD that only 2 characters (originals, too) made their return, and Knuckles isn't really my favorite (Tails FTW, but his only decent voice actor was from the Sonic Adventure games), but where was he? Ah, well, I guess....

Jsnott: You can go fall off a cliff for jumping on the bandwagon and ridiculing Super Mario Sunshine. That game was underrated (the only bad thing I saw was that it was a little challenging; big deal), and Galaxy was way too easy (fantastic, but way too easy).

i had high hopes for this one. thought it would be the one to get me back into Sonic from my Genesis days from all the glowing previews i read about it. i had an NES but i was so young then that Sonic and Genesis are my memories of gaming that go furthest back. i hate watching Sonic's fall from grace (time and time again) but i played the demo and it completely failed to get me even remotely more interested in it. it pretty much made me not buy it flat out. oh well, maybe next time they'll get it right.....
