- Gametrailers (80/100): "The Last Remnant is a hard game to judge. A person's enjoyment of it will be directly related to how much they can tolerate persistent graphical issues. If you can get past it, there's a lot to enjoy in the smart design decisions and its unique battle system."
- Gamespot (65/100): "How unfortunate that such a renowned RPG developer has buried a potential classic under a humiliating technical fiasco."
- Eurogamer (60/100): "It's a unique and compelling combat system buried beneath choppy pacing, too much wandering around, disappointing presentation problems and an awful lot of loading, and whether that's worth accepting depends largely on your tolerance or affection for long-winded self-indulgence, and whether you think 40 quid is a reasonable amount to pay for one superb idea cushioned by hours of grinding mediocrity."
- IGN (53/100): "The Last Remnant is a technical mess, but it's also behind the curve in so many ways."
Metareview - The Last Remnant (Xbox 360)

Well, so much for that fancy "platinum" score from Famitsu. Western critics have passed judgment on role-playing epic The Last Remnant, deeming it an intriguing turn-based affair that's unfortunately mired in plodding pacing and abundant technical issues. Did nobody think to send Square Enix the Unreal Engine's instruction manual?

Lost Odyssey as I said above is the perfect example of what's wrong with jrpgs. It's exactly the same game as one of the square rpg's of the PS1 era but with updated graphics. It was what finally made me declare the jrpg genre dead.

Nah Mcfresh, not jrpgs just console rpgs in general. I've been playing console rpgs since Dragon warrior 1 and don't really see the need for this new trend of signaling out Japanese rpgs by sticking a j in the front.. anywho.
Yeah Fallout 3 and Fable 2 are really great games, on my second evil play through for both of these, but I wouldn't call Fable 2 an rpg any more then I would call Twilight Princess an rpg (which I'm also playing through a second time at the moment).. At the most Id be ok with calling them action/rpgs but whatever...
and with fallout 3, its too easy to max out your character and stop acquiring exp points, after this it turns into an easy action game with dialogue trees.
An rpg is an rpg to me tmacairjordan87, what are you going to do when Korea or India start making rpgs, if they're not already?
Im so going to be all over Secret of Mana Dante, great game...Seems more of an rpg then Zelda or Fable but its still an action rpg isnt it?
Snowblind you're probably right..

It goes deeper than that, tmac. JRPGS haven't changed since Final Fantasy ON THE NES. Sure, the old turn based system has been replaced in favor of "real time" battles, but your still controlling the same ol' angsty protagonist, who travels around the map with his "Even though I am traveling with you as protection, I only agreed because I felt bad for you" love interest, fighting off the same mystical beasts/animals/humans in able to stop an evil villain (you know, as opposed to the good ones) from destroying/ taking over the world.
Pokemon was sorta new at first. It added the element of monster capturing and a few other things. But it was still a JRPG.

I'm dissapointed. I was looking at the game's box the other day, and thought it looks pretty cool.
Still, I'm not that surprised after watching a gameplay video of it. Horrible texture pop-in, horrible animations, and a horrible frame-rate just sort of kill what could be an awesome game.
Hopefully these issues will be fixed for the PS3 and PC release, but my hopes aren't that high.

What they say is true, but I still have fun playing it. The fps issues without install make the game unplayable. With the new install on 360 it plays a bit better, makes it playable but still a lot of issues. So far i would give it an 8. Im still on disk one though. 2 disks total. I would wait for PS3/PC release if you are thinking about getting the game.

Graphical issues? It's a JRPG... 99% of them look like a decade behind.

Hmm the game is getting even worse scres than I predicted it would when the first videos and articles were released. I was guessing it would get in the low 70s but I guess it's in the 60s as of now.
This was easy to predict though. It's way too easy to pick up on a mediocre jrpg and this looked like one from the day it was announced.

At the same time, I feel like saying fuck reviewers because it's hard to trust anyone of them anymore after the bullshit some of them continue to pull. I probably shouldn't make judgements until I get the game in my hands by rental or some other means.

I've already predicted that FF 13 will be a letdown, but does anyone even know what the hell versus 13 even is? Is it a fighting game? A regular jrpg? I can't make a prediction until I actually see and know something about the game.

I wouldn't worry about FF13 guys. TLR was clearly rushed.
(The more cynical of you may wish to blame Microsoft for that; after all, why did the 360 version release earlier than the other two versions, before it was ready? It could well be that Microsoft requested that the 360 be rushed out the gate as a timed exclusive to help them win over JRPG fans.)
FF13 and Versus 13 obvously aren't being rushed, so presumably won't suffer from the same technical issues.

Funny how critics didn't seem to mind the missing textures and loooooong load times of Mass Effect. They also didn't seem to mind that it locked up regularly for many players. I guess they loved the hours upon hours of mundane dialog and the ever so original story of a space marine having to save his planet, and with the epic plot twist of having to save the galaxy. Gee, its too bad other games don't have such original storylines.
Then again, if ME was a JRPG then everyone would say it sucked and was stuck in the 1990s.

How do you judge a game's technical issues when some of the reviewers didn't experience them? Some people had issues, but others like myself didn't experience anything other than the texture pop in. I'm pretty sure it had something to do with the age of the 360 it was playing on, cause I had a relatively new system when I played ME and it ran damn near perfectly.

Hmm, I dunno. Not many more.
360 has Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Infinte Undiscovery and Star Ocean 4.
PS3 has Valkyria Chronicles, Disgaea 3, White Knight Story, and FF Versus 13.
This disparity isn't quite as big as many make out, unless I've missed something big from the 360's list.

Yeah review scores don't mean shit to me. Everybody was crying about how Lost Odyssey wasn't the perfect FFXII clone but I enjoyed the hell out of it.
Better question is do I get Infinite Undiscovery or The Last Remnant first, since I haven't gotten around to playing either yet.

Both the IGN and Eurogamer reviews are whining because it's an RPG. Duh. What were they expecting? At least the Gametrailers and GameSpot reviews are fair and accurate.
Also, TLR has noticeable technical issues, yes. However, there is NO IMPACT on gameplay. It shouldn't affect the score, nor be such a massive talking point. So many other games have worse issues this generation.

Is it just me, or have reviews lately been going all over the place for games? Going from crap 5/10, to decent 8/10 like this game.

Well certainly when it comes to jrpgs, they never seem to review them as they would other games. I get the impression all the time that shooters are given better reviews, with a lot of issues overlooked (or doesn't have the score lowered).

The sad reality is, no western reviewer ever gives a jrpg a good review or a fair one. Lost Odyssey was a fantastic jrpg yet it didn't really receive great reviews. Does that make it a bad game? Far from it. Ign saying its behind the curve is just so typical of just about any review on a jrpg. Unless the gameplay is totally different, its always called "behind the curve", which is total crap.
Basically, play the game yourself before going by reviewers, most of which don't even like the genre on a serious level. Most of them still consider FF7 to be the greatest jrpg since slice bread which it just wasn't. A good game thats been totally over rated as time has past.
If any of you get the chance to pick Lost Odyssey on the cheap, i really recommend it, its a good game that many over looked.

That is exactly why I am getting Last Remnant anyway. I haven't found any viewers this generation I can trust, American viewers slam Jrpgs and Japnese reviewers slam Wrpgs. This console generation the wars are just not dying down. Only opinion I can trust is my own, and I like what I saw from the game.

well i was more worried about the technical issues they speak of than anything else. i already know that US reviewers always give JRPG's lower scores basically for doing what JRPG's do. i normally, just for personal use, give JRPG's an extra 10 points on a 100 point scale for just such a reason.
perfect example is ive been playing Tales of Vesperia which has an 81 on Metacritic, but the game is flipping awesome. it's the best game ive played so far this year. it's so good, it's made me stop playing LBP and R2 already. 91 is a better fitting score for me so that's what ill go with.

The funny thing is, both Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery have pretty unique battle systems. I didn't take to IU much, but slamming either game for being "the same old tired s***" isn't being fair at all.
The anti-jRPG bias in reviews has been going on for quite awhile now. Reviewers won't be satisfied until jRPGs become either action/adventure games or wRPGs. (Many of which try their hardest to pretend to be something else; Mass Effect and Fallout 3 wish they were shooters, Fable 2 wishes it were a hack and slash, etc.)

well i had been considering this one as an after christmas pick up but i may wanna rethink that. maybe they'll fix it for the PS3 release whenever that drops. with reviews that consistent, it's clear cut the technical issues overshadow the good stuff it does.
no use getting down about it though, there are plenty of good JRPG's out now as is (and im starting to sour on Squenix anyway...). ill just pass on this and keep an eye out for a patch or something.

I'm sure no one is reading this anymore, but I must say I finally played the game and I have this to say. The game does lag during battle scenes sometimes (well, rather often) but it's not that bad and it's NOT IMPORTANT TO ACTUAL GAMEPLAY. You will not win or lose a fight because the frames dropped for a second or two. The texture pop-up everyone is complaining about is no worse than Halo 3 and NO ONE can say that that game is at ALL graphically intense or anything of the sort. this game is far better looking than halo 3 with the same amount/frequency of pop-up, (if you'd like you can add the comparison to mass effect). Anyway, the rest of game is actually fairly good so far. It's hard though. And it's not a typical "gain XP and level up" kind of system. It's actually refreshing to have a game that is outside the norm. So long as you're not a complainer and can look past simple flaws that don't really detract from the game, I'd recommend fans of the genre to pick up this game. It's worth it.

I've played the game for about 30 hours so far and I have to say it's by far the most revolutionary and forward thinking JRPG to date. The game is incredibly rewarding, you can challenge huge numbers of enemies, and it's your choice if you want to play it on the safe side and challenge 1 mob and beat it easily for small rewards, or risk it all and do the impossible and reap the huge rewards and character skill & item gains. I've never died as much in an RPG as I have in this one. Hell, I've beaten some epic 60 hour plus RPG's only dying a handfull of times. Not this game though. I use the manual timing system, and that is incredibly rewarding as well because I can nail almost 4 out of every 5 quick time events and it changes the outcome of the battle, they are that significant. The music is absolutely epic, as is the game and the atmosphere it conveys. If you like deep, challenging, and rewarding JRPG's, then look no further.
