Nintendo adding Mario Red, Ice Blue DS bundles this week
In what has become a holiday tradition as beloved and predictable as your Uncle Jack tipping a few (or 17) back and daring you to punch him in the stomach, Nintendo is releasing two new DS bundles just in time for the shopping season.
Beginning on Black Friday, you can look for a red DS emblazoned with Mario's trademark "M" and packaged with New Super Mario Bros., as well as an Ice Blue model that's packing Brain Age and a custom carrying case. Well, you can look for the $149.99 bundles beginning on Black Friday, but don't be surprised if it's mid-February by the time a soccer mom decides against cutting your brake lines for buying one out from under her.

I'm considering a handheld but I'm looking for fairly core games (not ridiculously difficult Mega Man style platformers, but I don't mind Mario etc), and I don't know a lot about what the DS has to offer for that.. is its lineup of (non-J)RPGs and actioney games better than the PSPs?
Mikey @ Nov 25th 2008 9:05AM
Actually, the DS' best strengths are in point-n-click adventures like Hotel Dusk and Phoenix Wright.
Fulluphigh @ Nov 25th 2008 12:10PM
To actually answer your question, yes.
The DS has a large selection of quality platformers, puzzles and shootemups. Even FPS's like Metroid Prime Hunters are available (And in this situation, actually good games).
Plus there are the more niche games, like the last replier mentioned, to keep you entertained and let you experience new things.
Blank-Mage @ Nov 25th 2008 1:47PM
I wasn't sure what games I had in mind when I bought my DS, but with games like The World Ends With You, Elite Beat Agents, Sonic Rush, and any GBA game you want.... I don't regret my purchase, is my point.
Shagittarius @ Nov 25th 2008 1:54PM
As a core gamer I feel there is very little for me on the DS. While I don't spend much time portable gaming (even though I own a DS,PSP, and GP2x) I would certainly recommend a PSP over a DS for a 'core' gamer.
Better yet get yourself a gaming laptop if you don't need something that fits in your pocket.

Press the back button on your browser, scroll up until you find "Metareview - Chrono Trigger (DS)" and then you will have your answer.
But if the best game ever made is not your fancy, there is also Professor Layton and The Curious Village, The World Ends With You and Rune Factory 1 & 2.
Lord Negatron @ Nov 25th 2008 8:41AM
See how Nintendo pays attention to geography and ergonomics? Genius!
Now gangs in LA can "shoot it out" playing the DS.
humidfreak @ Nov 25th 2008 9:43AM
That is best reply ever on here
baby sea tuna @ Nov 25th 2008 8:58AM
Why did I think these existed already?
E. Leigh @ Nov 25th 2008 10:56AM
Because they do - I'm pretty sure these are the colors that were in Europe a little while ago...
Blank-Mage @ Nov 25th 2008 1:48PM
Because you saw the future, but didn't realize the gravity of your own awesome powers.
FriskyFlorist @ Nov 25th 2008 9:02AM
The Mario one is alright, but the Zelda one they had last year was much better. Glad I got one of those before they started to dissapear.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Nov 25th 2008 9:00AM
I have to say, I'm especially likeing the Ice Blue bundle. Maybe I should pick that up instead of waiting for the DSI.
silverwolf761 @ Nov 25th 2008 9:06AM
Is it just me, or is Nintendo getting REALLY lazy?
"Hmmmm.... People want new games, and we don't have them. I know! We'll release a DS package with different colours and games that have been released going on 2 years! God DAMN I'm a genius!"
samfish @ Nov 25th 2008 9:21AM
Nintendo puts out two DS color bundles every holiday.
All of them put out bundles with old games every year, too.
Foetoid @ Nov 25th 2008 9:21AM
Pure genius actually. All they have to do is bundle them in a new box and BAM, massive sales. This bundle, leading up to christmas, is Nintendo genius at its best. Probably trying to flog off as many DS Lites as possble until the DSi takes over. I'm also hoping they decide to instead of announcing a Wii pricedrop, simply bundle it with Wii Sports Resort and the Wii Motion Plus for free. It would equate to a price drop anyway. Perhaps they WILL drop the price and replace Wii Sports with the sequal. Who knows, but a pricedrop has to be immeninet for the Wii considering here in Australia, the 360 PRO + 3 free games is cheaper than a Wii with Wii Sports + 2 free games. With a lackluster 1st party lineup in Q1 '09, i'm seeing a pricedrop around April.
SKI @ Nov 25th 2008 9:29AM
It has nothing to do with the age of the games or any perceived lack of new games, it's just that these are two insanely popular titles.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Nov 25th 2008 10:36AM
>God DAMN I'm a genius!"
Yeah that is genious. Bundeling popular games with a system is a great marketing move.
Mr Khan @ Nov 25th 2008 11:59AM
Remember the NES. All their strategies of today they basically salvaged from that era
Of course, NES didn't do different colors, but the idea of packing in old software was prevalent
JRM @ Nov 25th 2008 4:56PM
Never more prevalent than when the SNES came with Super Mario All-stars. That was four old games packed into one.
Meloche @ Nov 25th 2008 9:40PM
When I got my SNES, it was in a bundle with Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario World. These were the good times...
Foetoid @ Nov 25th 2008 9:22AM
Now all Nintendo needs to do is bundle Mad World with a Wii when it's released in a special 'Blood Splatter' paintwork on the Wii. They won't of course, but i'd love to see it!
Blank-Mage @ Nov 25th 2008 1:50PM
I'd preorder.
Lee @ Nov 25th 2008 9:42AM
frackin hell I want that red one, or maybe blue. I'll just get both.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 25th 2008 9:49AM
You do realize that you can only play one at a time right?
Blank-Mage @ Nov 25th 2008 1:51PM
Depends on the game, alot of DS games can be used touch-screen only, so it's not impossible. Just very improbable.
The Aggie CEO @ Nov 25th 2008 9:44AM
dammit......and I already got the wife hers for Christmas.....maybe I can take it back....
Cubfan786 @ Nov 25th 2008 9:57AM
Or................ You could give it to me ;)
The Aggie CEO @ Nov 25th 2008 10:00AM
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight
lol
One Pink DS coming right up.....
Arnon @ Nov 25th 2008 4:12PM
WOOPINK.
Dante G @ Nov 25th 2008 10:01AM
I hope I can get that ice blue one for my wife this Christmas. I just hope the custom carrying case is worth the 10 bucks.
GhostofGrendel @ Nov 25th 2008 10:21AM
Dammit! I just bought a new cobalt blue and pink DS for the kids Saturday for Christmas. I would have liked the ice blue one instead of the cobalt blue, oh well. Got them at Gamestop, they had a pretty sweet deal going where you could trade your old SP in and get $40 off a new DS. They each cost me less than $90 bucks, not bad. I wanted to get them before the new DSi comes out because you can't play advance games on the DSi. On a side note it ticks me off to no end that they are taking away the old cartridge slot. I can't wait to see the B.S. pricing structure they set up at the download store to see how much all the old games I already bought would cost me if I bought them again, which they want me to do, which I absolutely refuse to do...
j.howlett @ Nov 25th 2008 10:25AM
that mario bundle is nice
343 Guilty Fart @ Nov 25th 2008 12:31PM
Huh, it's too bright red for me, I'm much more of a fan of the crimson/black one released last year.
JRM @ Nov 25th 2008 10:35AM
You people know that the DSi is coming out in six months, right?
whoever is still buying DSlites--especially brand new ones--has been duped by the marketing machine. They're unloading the now obsolete DSlites, and anyone who buys them now are suckers.
Just wait a few more months for the DSi.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Nov 25th 2008 10:38AM
Please explain to me how the DS would be considered obsolete when the DSi comes out? Especially since the DSI is just a DS with a camera and the fact that Nintendo is still planning on releasing Ds titles.
JRM @ Nov 25th 2008 4:45PM
It's difficult to explain, but when you actually hold the DSi in your hand (I live in Japan, btw) you feel it's newer and better. The control pad feels better, the buttons feel better, the screen is bigger, plus all the other features--whether trivial or not--make it just that much more interesting.
If anyone is buying the DS, especially as a first-time user, it's ridiculous to go for the DSLite at this point. It's only saving grace is that it has the GBA slot, and I would think that first time users will not be that interested in getting GBA games or pirated roms.
GhostofGrendel @ Nov 25th 2008 10:42AM
DS has a cartridge slot for advance games, DSi does not. That's why I'll buy the DS. I'm not buying all of my GBA games again.
Blank-Mage @ Nov 25th 2008 1:52PM
+1.
GhostofGrendel @ Nov 25th 2008 10:47AM
whoops my previous message was supposed to be for JRM.
SVergara @ Nov 25th 2008 10:45AM
Weird.. I just saw these on sale at my local Meijer. Maybe I should've picked them up...
ZaxCG2 @ Nov 25th 2008 11:35AM
More like... Baja Blast Blue.
FSK405K @ Nov 25th 2008 11:37AM
Will these sell in Japan? Hasn't everyone there labeled the DS as left for dead?
ZaxCG2 @ Nov 25th 2008 11:53AM
I'm pretty sure this will not retail in Japan. Tell me if I'm wrong.
JRM @ Nov 25th 2008 4:50PM
They don't sell DS bundles in Japan--or any bundles, really. For some reason, the US market is much more about bundles than Japan.
frozengod @ Nov 25th 2008 11:39AM
And once again, Luigi cries alone.
Suichimo @ Nov 25th 2008 12:31PM
So why is there no "Presidential Green" DS yet?
Anyway, if my original launch DS wasn't in perfect working condition with just the right amount of age showing, I might've considered one of these bundles.
Blank-Mage @ Nov 25th 2008 1:54PM
Of course it's in perfect working condition. They're never anything else. Short of going to town on it with a knife, the things are indestructible.
Arnon @ Nov 25th 2008 4:14PM
They should've put some designs on that 'Ice Blue' DS.. Reminds me of cotton candy..
