UK Report: Tomb Raider Underworld sales leading on PS3
Xbox 360-exclusive DLC? Lara Croft fans aren't so easily swayed, it seems. According to GamesIndustry.biz, the gallivanting grave-robber has found herself exploring the interior of the PlayStation 3, more than any other system, with the release of Tomb Raider: Underworld. The report notes that 51 percent of the game's initial UK sales (before Monday?) were on Sony's monolithic platform, with the Xbox 360 accounting for 34 percent. The rest is made up of Underworld's PC, Wii and DS versions.
While the news is somewhat surprising -- the Xbox 360 tends to enjoy a larger share of multiplatform sales -- it should be noted that PlayStation 3 owners missed out on the last two, post-reboot Tomb Raider adventures. We'll see whether that reflects in the US sales once the month is over.

Everyone who has a 360 is playing Gears2 and Left 4 Dead. Who has money to buy another tomb raider game? If I only had a PS3 I might have baught this game.
Obie @ Nov 25th 2008 5:46PM
Hmmm, interesting...didn't think of that one.
Cj @ Nov 25th 2008 5:47PM
You make sense!
Titanium_Orchid @ Nov 25th 2008 5:50PM
I only have a PS3 and I'm most definitely not playing this game
kaneda @ Nov 25th 2008 6:12PM
Also, people cannot pirated PS3 games.
Hyams @ Nov 25th 2008 6:16PM
It's because Resistance 2 still hasn't launched here.
Haggard @ Nov 25th 2008 6:21PM
Out of all the people I know with PS3s (which is a lot, they haven't even looked into the benefits of the 360, it's just automatically shit to them because it's the 'other' console), none of them are hyped for Resistance 2.
The first is a truly awful game which I had to, and still am, forcing myself to complete.
ThePhoenixLament @ Nov 25th 2008 6:25PM
Really....especially given the shitty reviews.
I mean really Joystiq if you're gonna lay some bait at least make it some actually bait worthy of the fanboy bitching.
Hyams @ Nov 25th 2008 6:31PM
Haggard:
I was hyped for Resistance 2, but then beta impressions and videos started leaking for Killzone 2, which looks so much better. It just sort of killed much of my hype for Resistance.
Still, I'll give Resistance a rent at least.
DigDug @ Nov 25th 2008 7:03PM
Well Left4Dead does not interest me, and I already traded in Gears2, as I thought it sucked badly.. Will I be buying this, nope, it's just a poormans Drakes Fortune, for those Xbox owners left out by the much better NaughtyDog franchise.
Lars @ Nov 25th 2008 9:09PM
"especially given the shitty reviews"
Really? All the reviews I've seen have been positive. Most gave it something around an 8, which is excellent.
Also, who is still playing Gears 2? It was fun and all, as the B-Movie style game it is... but seriously? It's something you rent and wipe your hands of it after a week.
I haven't bought L4D yet. I will, because a certain friend of mine won't stop bugging me to play with him. But I have my doubts about it's value... Most valve source offshoots come out at a low price point and I snatch em up gratefully, so I'm a bit put off by the price tag. I played the L4D demo, and I just don't see it being worth $50... maybe they jacked up the price because they're selling it on 360 too? Don't get me wrong, it was fun, but it also seems like it would get old fast. I guess I can say for sure once I play through it entirely...

"Also, who is still playing Gears 2? It was fun and all, as the B-Movie style game it is... but seriously? It's something you rent and wipe your hands of it after a week."
Hmmmm, would it be fair to assume someone never got around to sampling the delight that is Horde mode? That, for me, has more longevity than the original campaign could ever aspire to.
Duke @ Nov 26th 2008 9:58AM
DigDug - Don't you get it? We all know you are a lying troll piece of trash at this point.
Nobody believes you played, looked at, or even thought about playing Gears 2. Your dumb ass comment hardly means a thing against actual reviews from people who played it and pretty much praised the crap out of it. So give up and go to hell already.
Lars @ Nov 26th 2008 5:51PM
"would it be fair to assume someone never got around to sampling the delight that is Horde mode?"
You are correct sir. I played through the entire campaign in co-op, had a blast, and felt complete and satisfied. I'll have to check out Horde mode sometime, if it's as good as you say.
Skipjimroo @ Nov 28th 2008 2:27PM
Capital! You shan't be disappointed Sir, however, it is an experience greatly enhanced or diminished by the troupe you play in. That said, feel free to add my gamertag, so that when you get round to giving it a go you'll have at least one person trying to add to your enjoyment. It's exactly as it appears in my Joystiq username: "Skipjimroo"
Christ, how the hell did we digress to this in a Tomb Raider article?
Duke @ Nov 25th 2008 5:41PM
From the reviews I am wondering if this is good news for Sony or not. I kid - sales are sales!
DigDug @ Nov 25th 2008 7:01PM
"it should be noted that PlayStation 3 owners missed out on the last two, post-reboot Tomb Raider adventures."
Instead, we had the much better Drakes Fortune.
Snowblind @ Nov 25th 2008 7:54PM
Stop comparing TR to Uncharted. Uncharted was pretty much all about the combat, where as the combat in TR is pretty much non existant, instead it focuses on the puzzles and exploration.
Personally, I'd far rather play any of the TR games over Uncharted.
Slayer @ Nov 25th 2008 5:45PM
Could it possibly be that the 360 piracy is on the rise causing the ps3 version to get more sales? I mean the 360 version got DLC exclusively and a demo for it while the ps3 version gets nothing. Tomb Raider on the 360 is the superior version in terms of content. I'm pretty confused on this one. :(
Phantom @ Nov 25th 2008 5:47PM
If this is piracy , it will probably sway quite a few 3rd parties to releasing games only on PS3.
Titanium_Orchid @ Nov 25th 2008 5:51PM
This brings up a question I've had for some time now.
I guessing that when copying a game to the HD, the xbox is simply making an iso image of the CD. Its this true? It seems like it would be a lot simpler to pirate xbox games now if thats the case.
DBoyFlex @ Nov 25th 2008 5:55PM
You still need the game to play. To me it doesn't seem like anything has changed in terms of piracy. However, I wouldn't know either as I pay for the games I play.
Titanium_Orchid @ Nov 25th 2008 6:00PM
I'm not talking about ripping a disc. I'm talking about hacking the xbox and downloading an ISO from a torrent or something to that effect.
kaneda @ Nov 25th 2008 6:16PM
@t_orchid
You must have a bit for bit exact copy of the disc for the 360 to read it. The 360 installation extracts the contents of the game to the hard drive. If you notice, the amount of space it takes up is large than the size of the game iso. So I would conclude that it is not a bit for bit copy installed to the hard disk, but an uncompressed copy, which explains the speed gain.
Marty @ Nov 25th 2008 6:22PM
There aren't enough people pirating games on Xbox for this to be the cause.
Titanium_Orchid @ Nov 25th 2008 6:23PM
Would a bit-for-bit copy make piracy harder?
The only thing I can see making a bit-for-bit copy harder to pirate would be for each copy to have a unique number associated with it, which would also be unique to each game disc.
Even if that was the case, I would think that pirates could get around this somehow.
Slayer @ Nov 25th 2008 6:28PM
Like I said previously, this is all a possibility. I'm not going to make assumptions. I just happened to notice some of the games released on 360 recently have been leaked and pirated and I'm seeing it more often.
RiccochetJ @ Nov 25th 2008 6:37PM
@Slayer: If that were the case then the PS3 should have outsold the Xbox version as well. I actually think it's because the Xbox crowd got to play the demo and thought it sucked :P
RiccochetJ @ Nov 25th 2008 6:38PM
*PS3 version of Fallout 3*
HitNRun @ Nov 25th 2008 9:00PM
Console piracy isn't really a major sales factor. Few people know how to do it; even fewer are dumb or rich enough to risk their console being bricked.
Most likely it's the olden-school overlap between Sony fanboys and Tomb Raider fanboys. Not that Xbox sports a morally superior game lineup (DOA Volleyball), just that someone who still cares about Tomb Raider and has a console is more likely to have a PS3.
KillerBee @ Nov 25th 2008 6:02PM
Us 360 gamers are busy enjoying our much better games, including our exclusives. With such an awesome library on the 360, we are far too busy to play yet another sub-par Tomb Raider game.
Moptimus Slime @ Nov 25th 2008 5:49PM
This seems to be a case of nostalgia. Almost everyone will associate this game with the original on PS1 (yes i know it also came out on Saturn). Also, Sony has a solid base in Europe, especially Britain
atrimus @ Nov 25th 2008 10:48PM
wup, you heard it here first. PS3's FFXIII will completely trounce the 360's version.
Vcize @ Nov 25th 2008 5:52PM
Gears 2, Left 4 Dead, Fable 2, Tomb Raider: Underworld. Which does not belong?
I think we have our answer.
Moptimus Slime @ Nov 25th 2008 5:55PM
Left 4 Dead?
Rick @ Nov 25th 2008 5:56PM
Last Remnant? ... last remnant
I atleast liked it! *deserves to be in that list to atleast me*
Shagittarius @ Nov 25th 2008 5:57PM
Gears 2!
What do I win?
sk8monroe81 @ Nov 25th 2008 6:05PM
great point,
too many 360 exclusives out now to care about this game that has received poor reviews and a 360 demo is even available to try..
enjoy the game...
Josh @ Nov 25th 2008 5:59PM
The PS3 never got a demo of Tomb Raider Underworld. The 360 did.
The demo was awful. The controls made it really hard to land jumps. The camera was ridiculous.
Apparently the 360 owners figured out that the game was bad, but the PS3 owners didn't get the chance.
Moptimus Slime @ Nov 25th 2008 6:01PM
"The controls made it really hard to land jumps. The camera was ridiculous."
So, its the same ol' Tomb Raider?
Obie @ Nov 25th 2008 6:20PM
So wait, PS3 games can't wait for reviews or rent the game? They are mindless zombies that will buy everything in sight?
I dunno dude, that's weird.
Alien Lord @ Nov 25th 2008 6:52PM
@Obie yes Sony fanboys are mindless zombies.
jumpshot @ Nov 26th 2008 3:52PM
No, just limited in choice... and yes, I'm also a PS3 owner. I have all 3, but for PS3 I find myself buying games I don't really care for as much sometimes like this one just because there's nothing else "on".
Sidebuster @ Nov 25th 2008 6:01PM
Whoopy fucking doo
Wiinterfang @ Nov 25th 2008 6:30PM
Great Combination of avatar with comment.

sk8monroe81 @ Nov 25th 2008 6:02PM
THESE ARE UK SALES FIGURES....
just wait until the US sales figures are released.
there are about the same number of ps3 and 360 consoles in the UK.
however, there is approx. TWICE as many 360 consoles in the US than the ps3.
6.5 million ps3 in US
13 million 360 in US
Hyams @ Nov 25th 2008 6:15PM
Actually, the UK is a firm 360 bastion.
You're thinking of Europe as a whole, where there is an equal number of each console.
sk8monroe81 @ Nov 25th 2008 6:23PM
sometimes i do confuse the UK and EU and say they are the same place....
but do u think there are twice as many 360's in the UK ?
Hyams @ Nov 25th 2008 6:34PM
Yup, there are twice as many. Well, very almost, anyways.
lee @ Nov 25th 2008 6:03PM
no, the reason is tomb raider is a playstation game, first thing that comes to mind when you think tomb raider is playstation, so when people heard there a new tomb raider comming out, guess what?
they thought of playstation
