Many lives spared: PS3 'Destroy All Humans! Path of the Furon' canceled
39
It's a wonder the UFO soaring toward retail next week has made it through such a rocky atmosphere intact. Well, not entirely. Identified as Destroy All Humans! Path of the Furon, the vessel has shed half of its cargo, with THQ confirming to Shacknews that the PlayStation 3 version of the game (flying under all radars) has been canceled due to "development issues." Put another way, PS3 owners can consider themselves spared from the latest sequel in the good-idea-gone-bad franchise. So, about that new focus on quality ...

Really...
And here I was thinking about hard to program Cell, and weak GPU.
Saturn with it's 8 CPU's (IIRC) also had "lazy developers"?.

I agree with the person above me they aren't lazy, just not talented. So many developers already know how to program for the cell, capcom has been doing it esaily, and Sony's 1st party titles are destroying the competition, even infinity ward did a great job. Developers just need to focus on the ps3 version more, u can't just port over the 360 version and pray that it magically works.

Hey enrique,
There is absolutely nothing special about the graphics of mgs4. You do know Gears 2 already surpassed MGS4 graphically right? The fact that you believe what Sony executives say and not ms execs say is hilarious. You are a hypocrite. You listen on set of corporate executives but not another.
The ps3's gpu is weaker then the 360's. The difference is the cpu in the ps3. The cpu in the ps3 is a more powerful then the 360's, so they are both balanced. Ps3 has the best graphics this gen? This gen isn't over. A very bad assumption to make.

Look at the tech specs for each system's GPU and you will see they are roughly equivalent. The 360 has a slight memory speed advantage, while the PS3 has more cores. Honestly, they are nearly identical performance-wise. They are both capable of producing amazing graphics, the only reason the Xbox seems to have any advantage is because it uses the Direct3D APIs while the PS3 uses OpenGL. Nearly all game programmers these days only know Direct3D so they are able to optimize for the 360.

I have both games but noting compares to MGS4's graphics so far. Tell me how is it better please!!!

At this rate, graphics aren't really better or worse. They mostly just differ in style.
The key thing about Xbox vs. PS3 developing issues is this.
1) The PS3 is optimized for multithreading * 20. It just does it better then the 360, the problem is that multithreading is very complicated to put into old frameworks. It's a whole lot easier to take advantage of multithreading if you have that as a goal for a framework from the start. You can't just update an old engine that easy.
2) The PS3 has an abysmal amount of memory, this was totally freaking retarded for Sony to not think about, especially giving the fact that Bluray loads extremely slow just to add to the problem.
3) The GPUs are very very similar....
4) Debugging on multithreaded setups is a giant headache. >_>

The original DaH had such a creative, quirky idea that worked so great. THQ has been for shame though, whoring it out to crappy ports and spinoffs.

obviously resources from the PS3 version of DAH needed to be diverted to 2009's GOTY: 50 Cent Blood in the Sand.

Weak economy+360 easier/cheaper to develop for=This
Expect more of this the credit crisis will make developers think twice about that $10,000 PS3 dev kit

What does that say about the quality of the game? If they don't think they'll make back enough to cover a $10K cost... I'm not sure I wanted the game to begin with.

You guys are so quick to say the developers are incompetent or lazy...
how many of you who say that have actually tried programming, let alone programming for a game?
it may not be an account of difficulty at all but time. Developing for the PS3 IS HARDER than the 360, having said that - if you can make a game on the 360 in 6 months, versus a ps3 port and 360 simultaneous release in 1 year... and you want to turn a profit - think about the salaries involved in that extra time. It's not like the franchise is such a big name that it warrants the EA treatment of 4 shitty versions instead of one good one.

How about "no developers"?
THQ closed the studio a long time ago. The Xbox 360 version went gold and the final people were laid off. With no one around to fix the final bugs in the PS3 version then it can not be submitted.

This does not effect me at all because I hated the first game. The first game's demo covered me for DAH for the rest of my life.

Yes, the PS3 has a nice gfx card, but you need to remember that it only has ONE general purpose core on its CPU which really limits what it can do. The PS3 has great CPU power, but for only certain applications (such as physics due to the extra cores on the cpu being floating point units only). The XBOX 360 has 3x general purpose cores that can be told to compute anything they like, not just floating point calculations. Also, although the ps3 is a fast unit, it also has an abysmal memory bandwidth, just 1/10th of the XBOX 360's. So yes the gfx are powerful, but at the moment, they are spent waiting for instructions from the CPU that is lagging behind. Kinda like running a geforce 280 on a celeron 1.4ghz, doesnt mean you're going to get amazing graphics. If you dont believe what I am saying, please read a little further, and just pop into your store to see how many titles on ps3 run at 1080p compared to the XBOX360, and you will find that there are FAR MORE 1080P titles on the xbox 360. And before you call me a sony hater, i have a ps3! Because of the many single purpose cores and one general purpose core on the processor, porting games to the PS3 is a lot harder because the xbox 360 has 3 general purpose cores, so you have to literally recode it to work efficiantly on the Cell processor.
