Many lives spared: PS3 'Destroy All Humans! Path of the Furon' canceled
It's a wonder the UFO soaring toward retail next week has made it through such a rocky atmosphere intact. Well, not entirely. Identified as Destroy All Humans! Path of the Furon, the vessel has shed half of its cargo, with THQ confirming to Shacknews that the PlayStation 3 version of the game (flying under all radars) has been canceled due to "development issues." Put another way, PS3 owners can consider themselves spared from the latest sequel in the good-idea-gone-bad franchise. So, about that new focus on quality ...

Talk about lazy developers...
anonim1979 @ Nov 26th 2008 5:13PM
Really...
And here I was thinking about hard to program Cell, and weak GPU.
Saturn with it's 8 CPU's (IIRC) also had "lazy developers"?.
SoulBlade @ Nov 26th 2008 5:16PM
anonim - that argument may have worked a year or so ago, but looking at the similarities between cross platform 360 / PS3 titles, it's pretty clear that it can be done and reused.
browntown @ Nov 26th 2008 5:18PM
I agree with the person above me they aren't lazy, just not talented. So many developers already know how to program for the cell, capcom has been doing it esaily, and Sony's 1st party titles are destroying the competition, even infinity ward did a great job. Developers just need to focus on the ps3 version more, u can't just port over the 360 version and pray that it magically works.
kaneda @ Nov 26th 2008 5:21PM
Another take: It wasn't worth the extra costs and effort to port a game designed for 360 to PS3 when it was not a great selling franchise to begin with.
eNrique @ Nov 26th 2008 5:50PM
Hey anonim;
Weak GPU???, I guess you do NOT undestand how GPU's work, and I am not here to explain.
The Ps3 has the best graphics this gen, no doubt.
And no they are not lazy devs, they are INCOMPETENT.
KillZone 2, Uncharted, MGS 4(a game not possible on the 360 no matter what ms execs say) 360 Say HOLA!!!
for the Saturn
also NiGHTS into Dreams, Panzer Dragon and Virtua Fighter say HELLO!!!
Arnon @ Nov 26th 2008 6:16PM
eNrique you didn't really prove to people that you knew what a GPU was ;>.>
Joel @ Nov 26th 2008 6:24PM
Hey enrique,
There is absolutely nothing special about the graphics of mgs4. You do know Gears 2 already surpassed MGS4 graphically right? The fact that you believe what Sony executives say and not ms execs say is hilarious. You are a hypocrite. You listen on set of corporate executives but not another.
The ps3's gpu is weaker then the 360's. The difference is the cpu in the ps3. The cpu in the ps3 is a more powerful then the 360's, so they are both balanced. Ps3 has the best graphics this gen? This gen isn't over. A very bad assumption to make.
Aaron @ Nov 26th 2008 6:51PM
Look at the tech specs for each system's GPU and you will see they are roughly equivalent. The 360 has a slight memory speed advantage, while the PS3 has more cores. Honestly, they are nearly identical performance-wise. They are both capable of producing amazing graphics, the only reason the Xbox seems to have any advantage is because it uses the Direct3D APIs while the PS3 uses OpenGL. Nearly all game programmers these days only know Direct3D so they are able to optimize for the 360.
eNrique @ Nov 26th 2008 7:24PM
For the mentally challenged that only look at specs:
nVidia Rsx pipelines
-24 shader pipelines.
-each pipeline produces 5.7 ops
-a total of 136 sops
ATI pipelines
-48 shader pipelines.
-each pipeline produces 2 ops
-a total of 96 sops
(sops - shader opperations per second)
and both feautere full FP32 support
RSX also feautres TurboCache.
does it tell you something?
Also I don't rely my comments on Sony execs, those were words of Kojima Productions.
gears 2 better looking than MGS 4???(both great games anyway), shiny things doesn't mean it has better graphics.
lochack @ Nov 26th 2008 7:49PM
Hey Joel, can you explain to HOW gears of war 2 has better graphics than MGS4?
I have both games but noting compares to MGS4's graphics so far. Tell me how is it better please!!!

I love how the troll ball rolls down,I hope I don't get crush by the nerd rage.
Tiptup300 @ Nov 27th 2008 12:59AM
At this rate, graphics aren't really better or worse. They mostly just differ in style.
The key thing about Xbox vs. PS3 developing issues is this.
1) The PS3 is optimized for multithreading * 20. It just does it better then the 360, the problem is that multithreading is very complicated to put into old frameworks. It's a whole lot easier to take advantage of multithreading if you have that as a goal for a framework from the start. You can't just update an old engine that easy.
2) The PS3 has an abysmal amount of memory, this was totally freaking retarded for Sony to not think about, especially giving the fact that Bluray loads extremely slow just to add to the problem.
3) The GPUs are very very similar....
4) Debugging on multithreaded setups is a giant headache. >_>
Farmer @ Nov 27th 2008 4:17AM
Dude,
MGS4 didnt have the best graphics. Average, but GoW2, WOW
Al2x @ Nov 26th 2008 4:51PM
The original DaH had such a creative, quirky idea that worked so great. THQ has been for shame though, whoring it out to crappy ports and spinoffs.
Alien Lord @ Nov 27th 2008 3:08AM
Any chance to destroy all humans is a good thing. "Crypto get your mind back on my big willy!"
Haggard @ Nov 26th 2008 4:56PM
From what I've seen of the gameplay videos, whichever version they were showing had absolutely horrible graphics.
Picture Saints Row 2 with a thick layer of vasoline and lots of screen-tear.
lorddshadow2 @ Nov 26th 2008 5:14PM
didn't look THAT bad. sheesh...

allen @ Nov 26th 2008 5:15PM
obviously resources from the PS3 version of DAH needed to be diverted to 2009's GOTY: 50 Cent Blood in the Sand.
lee @ Nov 26th 2008 5:44PM
HAHA yeah
hey THQ can you cancel 50 cent aswell please, we dont want your crap
id rather shit in my blu-ray drive than put DAH or 50 cent in it
SoulBlade @ Nov 26th 2008 5:15PM
Wow THClueless... still can't seem to get an engine working for both platforms it seems. Might be time to look into a third party to solve your inefficiencies...
uh-oh polio @ Nov 26th 2008 9:35PM
Not gonna be missed anyway.
ChiTownRuler23 @ Nov 26th 2008 5:25PM
this will be one weak 360 exclusive then i heard the other DAH games were homoerectus
punx @ Nov 26th 2008 5:31PM
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
i was sooo looking forward to this for ps3 ahh what am
i gonna do i already bought it online!
lol j/k i could care less i played the first game
never touched the second look ed like same old alien
kills people in 1950's GOOD RIDDANCE!
jxcgunrunna @ Nov 26th 2008 5:41PM
I do believe you mean "I could NOT care less"
If you could care less than that means you care some.
mat parker @ Nov 26th 2008 5:36PM
Weak economy+360 easier/cheaper to develop for=This
Expect more of this the credit crisis will make developers think twice about that $10,000 PS3 dev kit
reyes @ Nov 26th 2008 6:38PM
What does that say about the quality of the game? If they don't think they'll make back enough to cover a $10K cost... I'm not sure I wanted the game to begin with.
j.howlett @ Nov 26th 2008 5:50PM
this is the worst news i've gotten all day. hope it stays that way
Shmil @ Nov 27th 2008 1:15AM
YOU JINXED IT!
MUMBAI!!!
The Dark Wayne @ Nov 26th 2008 5:54PM
meh, i kinda enjoyed the first one, but i couldnt even play the second one since it was around the time i got the 360 and it seemed too huge a downgrade
Jordan @ Nov 26th 2008 6:10PM
You guys are so quick to say the developers are incompetent or lazy...
how many of you who say that have actually tried programming, let alone programming for a game?
it may not be an account of difficulty at all but time. Developing for the PS3 IS HARDER than the 360, having said that - if you can make a game on the 360 in 6 months, versus a ps3 port and 360 simultaneous release in 1 year... and you want to turn a profit - think about the salaries involved in that extra time. It's not like the franchise is such a big name that it warrants the EA treatment of 4 shitty versions instead of one good one.
Bob @ Nov 26th 2008 6:46PM
How about "no developers"?
THQ closed the studio a long time ago. The Xbox 360 version went gold and the final people were laid off. With no one around to fix the final bugs in the PS3 version then it can not be submitted.
Aaron @ Nov 26th 2008 6:13PM
No excuse, THQ. Two words: Phyre Engine
Sam @ Nov 26th 2008 6:44PM
You can't make good games anymore can you THQ?
A-no you can't! A-nope! your all shovelware now!
yes you are! yesh you areee!
*raspberries* ah! look they made a funny face!
Jeremy White @ Nov 26th 2008 7:22PM
This does not effect me at all because I hated the first game. The first game's demo covered me for DAH for the rest of my life.
j.howlett @ Nov 26th 2008 8:25PM
wait, there was no ps2 version?
Jacksons @ Nov 26th 2008 10:10PM
I only played the second one for the original Xbox. Based on that, I can't say I'm looking forward to the new one, especially since the latest iteration on Wii was mauled in the reviews.
marcos @ Nov 27th 2008 10:25AM
World or Warcraft....
Tyler @ Nov 28th 2008 9:22PM
Yes, the PS3 has a nice gfx card, but you need to remember that it only has ONE general purpose core on its CPU which really limits what it can do. The PS3 has great CPU power, but for only certain applications (such as physics due to the extra cores on the cpu being floating point units only). The XBOX 360 has 3x general purpose cores that can be told to compute anything they like, not just floating point calculations. Also, although the ps3 is a fast unit, it also has an abysmal memory bandwidth, just 1/10th of the XBOX 360's. So yes the gfx are powerful, but at the moment, they are spent waiting for instructions from the CPU that is lagging behind. Kinda like running a geforce 280 on a celeron 1.4ghz, doesnt mean you're going to get amazing graphics. If you dont believe what I am saying, please read a little further, and just pop into your store to see how many titles on ps3 run at 1080p compared to the XBOX360, and you will find that there are FAR MORE 1080P titles on the xbox 360. And before you call me a sony hater, i have a ps3! Because of the many single purpose cores and one general purpose core on the processor, porting games to the PS3 is a lot harder because the xbox 360 has 3 general purpose cores, so you have to literally recode it to work efficiantly on the Cell processor.
mntwister @ Dec 16th 2008 11:51PM
I liked the series, and would have bought it. OK so it isn't rated as the best or "awesome" but it's unfair to us PS3 owners who DO want it.
