Don't go burning your pre-order slips for the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV in effigy just yet, dear readers -- yes, according to an unnamed Rockstar staffer, the title will implement the oft-decried SecuROM to prevent piracy, however, its imposed limitations aren't too severe. Speaking to IGN, the Rockstar rep explained that the GTA IV disc will need to be in the drive in order to play the game, and the title must be registered online upon installation. However, we won't be seeing a repeat of the drama that recently plagued Spore -- there's no limit to the amount of times the game can be installed.
Obviously, these rules are different for those who acquire the game via digital distribution, as retail services such as Steam have their own install limits and anti-piracy measures. We suggest checking out the aforementioned IGN interview if you're currently suffering from a DRM-related panic attack.

Np. Oh, just so you know, you will never TOTALLY get rid of Securom as it writes itself to ring 0 (the kernal). The way it "works" is to skull fuck several low level I/O functions so they don't work or deliberately return false information (such as impossible dates) from the system to prove to the game that this this shit stain is running.
However, the method above will stop it working.
If I knew how this fucking rootkit POS worked beforehand, I would never have bought Spore.

Anything that installs as a kernel-mode driver on my machine will not be on my machine. Period. Once something gets down into the OS itself, all hell breaks loose. There's no excuse for it.
There's a very good discussion about this on SlashDot right now, with far more technical insight, including the dreaded uninstall issues. This stuff is downright scary, and we are quickly approaching the point where every game tries to install its own root kit.

I will never install a game with anything like SecuROM on it. Developers will never learn that no matter what they do, people will ALWAYS find a way to pirate the games. They should stop wasting money on DRM. I am willing to wager that the amount they lose to piracy is less than all the money they waste on these idiotic DRM systems that all get cracked anyway. They should sell the game with extras like a limited edition t-shirt or poster or something along those lines if they want to sell more copies. If my favorite game came with a t-shirt that you could only get by buying the game, I would be more inclined to do that. Instead they have released yet another game that won't be finding its way to my PC and my money won't be finding its way to the developers. Someday they will learn, but I won't be holding my breath.

Thanks ROCKSTAR for saving me 50 bucks. Man i owe you one for doing that. Maybe i will buy you a beer one day. Man this really sucks i will really looking forward to this game. This shit is one of the reasons that i stayed away from pc gaming. Maybe one day it will like the good ol days of pc gaming, but for now back to my PS360.

why do they use a controversial DRM for something as simple as a CD check? there's like a million other DRM programs that don't make gamers cry in fear the second they hear it, and they've already cracked SecureROM anyway.
Publishers are weird.

Cause they haven't figured out that PCs suck for gaming and are still trying to rape PC gamers.

Wow thats alot of legwork to get it running, and Steam has it worse from what I see... As with every game ill download it first without all that activation and CD check trouble, then ill decide if I should buy it.
Its been said again and again, why bother with copy protection... Every game till now I have been able to download and play before the release' and then purchase the good ones once their out. So please stop this stupid BS...

Maybe if you didn't download every game then they wouldn't be using SecuROM?

Thats the point, IT DOSN'T WORK !!! Why should I get punished by buying a game, when I don't need to register or have to put in my DVD to ply by using a pirated copy. Hell I was playing left 4 dead all weekend online with a pirated copy, tho im going out tomorrow to buy it since I enjoy it so much. And i know that its a game from steam that means i just need to be online to play it, and remember to set it in offline when ill be playing LAN at the College...
In short copy protection hurts the legit buyers, and is making more people move to consoles...

I see no harm with this.

Then you've obviously never had to deal with the POS that is SecuROM.

Sure I have. I bought Spore and Dead Space, and worried that in the future I'd have problems installing the game due to limits. But this isn't harmful. So you need to register online and keep your CD in the drive. Not a big deal. Its a means of protecting the software while at the same time not really restricting the user.
Most all software nowadays requires online registration.

The copies of Spore and Farcry 2, DRM Free, I has installed say that SecureROM doesn't prevent piracy at all.

Thanks, Rockstar, for providing excuse to pirates to steal Gta IV.

I don't think they need an excuse..
this causes problems for legitimate customers, and doesn't stop piracy... but it doesn't cause piracy either...

Ah, finally it's specified. Well, as long as it doesn't affect install limit or any other way I want to play the game I'm fine with it.

Does anyone know how to make adblock plus disable this ad? http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/3245/ozzyxs8.jpg
It's really annoying and sometimes it even comes up when I try to give some one a + on their comment. It doesn't come up when I use internet explorer though.

Sucks that piracy happens so often on PC. In my opnion it'll only be a matter of time before only the big companies make games on PC. But even then they'll loose money. Hell, look at valve realeasing games for the 360. I'd thought that shit would never happen (valve putting out games for a console).

Never had that here at all, you sure its not ad-ware/spyware ? You should run a scan or something... Also id recommend using privoxy, works and its much better. This is how to do it with chrome, but its easy to translate to firefox http://lifehacker.com/5046529/how-to-block-ads-in-google-chrome

This is just another reason not to play games on PC and get them for Wii60DS.

Immediate fail. The problem with SecuROM isn't the limitations it imposes on consumers, it is how it performs its job. It changes how your computer functions on the lowest level possible, and it is impossible to debug or stop.
Let's say you're taking your car to Disneyland. Disney wants to make sure you don't leave Disneyland without paying. So they permanently and irreversably alter your engine block so that they have full access to your car. Furthermore, they do so in ways that nobody can undo, and make it functionally impossible to tune your car properly anymore.
That's SecuROM. In order to play ONE videogame, they fundamentally alter your system functioning in ways they are not setup to support.
However, if you want the version without SecuRom... the version that is better for you and your system... you have to pirate the game.
SecuROM. Epic. Fail.
