Japanese hardware sales, Nov. 17 - Nov. 23: Unwise purchases edition

Our savings accounts now liquidated, we currently find ourselves in a residential crisis. Had we only possessed the foresight to place importance on rent payments rather than kitchen utensils and smooth, smooth music, we may have avoided this predicament. That's where you guys come in -- we either need to pawn off our regrettably obtained goods to pay off our living expenses, or be put in contact with a landlord who will accept the aforementioned odds and ends as apartmental compensation. Surely, someone out there knows of a kind superintendent with unsecure dentures and a proclivity for scooting.
The spending habits of Japan's console-purchasing populous mirrored our own over the past week, with most systems seeing major sales increases. Six of the top ten best-selling titles belonged to Nintendo's handheld -- combined with the limited availability of the DSi, this caused a major bounce-back for the DS Lite. We've sent a congratulatory "Hang in There, Baby" poster in response, though we're not sure the DS Lite will receive it, as it is an inanimate object.
- DSi: 88,843
3,516 (4.12%)- PSP: 61,226
23,073 (60.47%)- Wii: 35,298
8,511 (31.77%)- DS Lite: 18,580
15,021 (422.06%) - PS3: 17,436
- Xbox 360: 15,474
7,491 (93.84%)- PS2: 5,281

GO GO 360!!!
DigDug @ Dec 1st 2008 2:41AM
Didn't you learn anything last time, when the PS3 destroyed 7weeks 360 sales in a single week? Clearly not..
Don't forget PS3 has over 2m advantage in Japan..
Arnon @ Dec 1st 2008 2:53AM
Digdug.. does your butt hurt from him saying that? =/
Abuzar Baloach @ Nov 30th 2008 11:19PM
I love how the PS2 is hangin on for dear life.
Wiinterfang @ Nov 30th 2008 11:24PM
yeah I can't believe people are still buying new PS2's.
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 30th 2008 11:28PM
Cheapest system in tough economic times combined with arguably the best lineup of games ever...I don't think it's wierd that its' still selling.
-slycooper_rocker- (lorddshadow the amazing) psn: shahanasalam @ Nov 30th 2008 11:37PM
i do considering that like every person has one
Jake11- Born and raised in W. Philly @ Nov 30th 2008 11:37PM

Abuzar Baloach @ Nov 30th 2008 11:42PM
going.
Finish your sentences.
Slayer @ Dec 1st 2008 12:06AM
The ps2 is indeed an awesome system. I still use mine very often.
WRE @ Dec 1st 2008 12:19AM
Best lineup of games ever? I don't see the SNES on that sales chart.
Abuzar Baloach @ Dec 1st 2008 12:35AM
Umm, they don't actually SELL the SNES. This chart is about sales...
Wiinterfang @ Dec 1st 2008 12:44AM
What about the DS lite then? that sure is a contender for best line up ever. (GB,GBA,DS)
Abuzar Baloach @ Dec 1st 2008 12:45AM
The DS Lite seems to be doing very well.
chispito @ Dec 1st 2008 1:13AM
Obviously the oldest system still sold is going to have the best selection of games available. That doesn't make it the best lineup ever, though.
tmacairjordan87 @ Dec 1st 2008 1:18AM
I don't recall implying that it had one of the best lineups ever because it's old. It's a legitimate contender.
In before the people all hyped up on nostalgia come and verbally crucify me.
lokilokidoo @ Dec 1st 2008 1:44AM
@Wiinterfang
The DS can play GBA games, but not GB games.
Lawrence @ Dec 1st 2008 1:40AM
The SNES has the best lineup out there so STFU.
Now that I've fulfilled your "in before", I'd have to say that the PS2 does have the best lineup, especially when you consider all the PS1 games it can play, and the SNES games that got remade for it.
By Wiinterfang's definition, half of the PS3 sysmtems made should probably have the best console lineup then. Not only do I get to play MGS4, but I get to also play FFX too!
WRE @ Dec 1st 2008 1:41AM
Abuzar,
I said nothing about the SNES not being on the chart, I was just saying that it had the best lineup of games ever.
tmac,
It has nothing to do with how old it is or nostalgia. Most SNES games still hold up. But if you're one of those kids whose first system was the original Playstation then I'll have to take your opinion with a sea-full of salt. You understand, right? It'd be like trusting a movie critic who got into writing reviews because of 2 Fast 2 Furious.
Haggard @ Dec 1st 2008 2:53AM
@slycooper
Only 80 million-ish people have one. Sony need to shift another 5.92 billion to cover everyone!
tmacairjordan87 @ Dec 1st 2008 10:27AM
Well technically my first system was a NES, but I learned at a very young age you shouldn't leave it on all day while you go to school (it burst in flames when I came home). My first system that lasted a while was a SNES, and I still stand by what I said about the ps2. Most of these SNES games just aren't as good nowadays.
Oh and I finally beat chrono trigger for the first time a few days ago. Good game, but not as good as everyone says it is. I'm blaming nostalgia for that though.
Levi @ Nov 30th 2008 11:24PM
If that picture is of the Wal-Mart sale a couple weeks back with the Compaq laptops, I was there. Seems more likely it would be a pic from Black Friday, but those look like the CQ-50's.
That was boring.
AK @ Dec 1st 2008 11:15AM
Actually, it's Target.
Wal-Mart doesn't wear red and khaki. Plus, you can see the red aisle markers in the back left corner.
(I know this because I work at Target.)
-slycooper_rocker- (lorddshadow the amazing) psn: shahanasalam @ Nov 30th 2008 11:40PM
ps3 down...12. haha. that's hilarious. every other change is significant and ps3 goes down 12. hahahaha.
this isn't an anti-ps3 message. i love my ps3 dearly.
Gun Barrier @ Nov 30th 2008 11:58PM
You know what would have been funnier?! Zero change! I don't even think they have an arrow to represent that! XD
j.howlett @ Dec 1st 2008 12:09AM
would it just be a flat black line or dash? or maybe 2 arrows side by side?
Premature ejaculation man @ Dec 1st 2008 12:23AM
Joystiq and all of its staff would implode.
Haggard @ Dec 1st 2008 3:07AM
It was a 0.07% change - James Bond is pulling the strings.
Popfrogs @ Dec 1st 2008 12:53PM
Pssh, James Bond is dead. You must be referring to Quantum of Generic Action Film.
Rollins @ Nov 30th 2008 11:47PM
Did a new JRPG for the 360 come out that week?
Ayrkain @ Nov 30th 2008 11:56PM
Yeah. Last Remnant.
tmacairjordan87 @ Dec 1st 2008 12:15AM
Ouch...poor japanese.
Envoy @ Dec 1st 2008 12:19AM
That explains.
Hyams @ Dec 1st 2008 7:14AM
Wasn't everyone expecting the 360 to outsell the PS3 in Japan for the next few weeks (and some predicted for the rest of the year) because of TLR?
Oh well, it's not like it really matters, I suppose. The PS3 just got raped in America. Expect to see much gloating from 360 fans when this month's NPD is released.
Smoke_Dawg_187 @ Nov 30th 2008 11:54PM
I noticed they're not putting those to little images next to the Xbox 360. I could never see what those pictures were. Can anyone tell me what they were?
Strategy_Panda (the artist formally known as Titanium_Orchid) @ Dec 1st 2008 1:27AM
red and green arrows?
jxcgunrunna @ Dec 1st 2008 2:04AM
So easy a caveman can read it.
zuburi @ Dec 1st 2008 2:21AM
Damn you! That's my line!!!

These things right? Yeah, I could never see them either... (and now they're gone)
Smoke_Dawg_187 @ Dec 1st 2008 8:07AM
@WilhelmThe1st
That's exactly what I'm talking about. Thank you! Well it's good to know I wasn't the only one not able to see what they were.
Now if Joystiq would let me change my avatar that joke would die. I guess the plus side is atleast people know what it is.
finnith @ Dec 1st 2008 12:02AM
How is the DS Lite still on that list!!?!?!
Wiinterfang @ Dec 1st 2008 12:13AM
DSi shortage baby.
j.howlett @ Dec 1st 2008 12:24AM
and new bundles
AYC @ Dec 1st 2008 12:28AM
Power of the GBA slot?
Gun Barrier @ Dec 1st 2008 12:32AM
How is the ps2 still on the list?
Chin-Poh @ Dec 1st 2008 12:46AM
Its still selling, maybe that's the reason?
Foetoid @ Dec 1st 2008 4:00AM
I thought Nintendo said the DS Lite wouldn't be discontinued for a while.
sam @ Dec 1st 2008 7:19AM
@foetoid: Nintendo also said DS wouldn't replace GBA and look where that ended up...
I guess given that lie^W claim it does make sense to track the two systems separately. Incidentally, even if you add them together, DS still only had a 21% sales increase this week.
Negativecool @ Dec 1st 2008 1:04AM
Why am I not surprised to see the only two red arrows belong to Sony consoles...
You know those cliche shows where some star hits rock bottom? The point where their best friend tells them in disgust as they leave for the last time, "For christ's sake, get it together, bye..."
That's how I feel with how Sony is handling its home market of Japan....
That is all, carry on.
Haggard @ Dec 1st 2008 3:09AM
I'm sure Sony are really feeling the burn, selling 12 less PS3s than last week.
