Finding Jasper: Shot of Xbox 360's 256MB internal storage
Further evidence has arisen supporting claims that Xbox 360 consoles boasting the latest hardware revision, the 65nm-chip-on-the-solder "Jasper," are making their way through retail channels. An X3F tipster forwarded the above image of a new system's "Storage Devices" screen, which indicates the presence of the 256MB on-board flash storage, designated "MU." Unlike the previous batch of Arcade systems, the new console reportedly did not include a 256MB external memory card.
With Microsoft remaining mum on the specifics of internal hardware changes, images (and videos) like the one above represent our best means of finding Jasper. Are you out there, buddy?

hmmm...the dvd drive isn't shiny anymore...
killbot13 @ Dec 1st 2008 5:41PM
All of the Arcade/Core models have been that way from day 1.
Kye - Capcom DF @ Dec 1st 2008 5:52PM
I think what confuses him (and me) is the presence of the harddrive on the top. It leads one to think it's the Pro model.
Viridium @ Dec 1st 2008 7:56PM
Kye - it's pretty simple. I think most Jaspers so far have been Arcades. Someone's simply popped a hard drive onto this Arcade Jasper in order to get the screenshot.

cheetos, xbox and internal storage. A match made in heaven.

Don't forget IVs filled with Mountain Dew.
killbot13 @ Dec 1st 2008 5:40PM
I wish I would have known exactly when to expect these, since it was originally thought September I got tired of waiting and had to jump on a Black Friday sale. Oh well, I got a good deal and bought a 2 year warranty plan just in case. It would have been nice to get a lower wattage system though.
zygote55 @ Dec 1st 2008 6:01PM
You bought a 2 year warranty plan on a system that comes with a 3 year warranty?
killbot13 @ Dec 1st 2008 6:11PM
Three year warranty is only for the red ring, nothing else! And my warranty starts after the manufacturers warranty. :) There are many other things that can go wrong with electronics.
TeflonFong @ Dec 1st 2008 6:20PM
the 3 year warranty ONLY covers the RROD. My 360's ethernet port went bad and xbox customer support did not even have a record of my specific error code, and were unwilling to do a free repair. Luckily I bought an extended warranty, I just went into Best Buy and got a brand new 360 the same day.
I am covered regardless of my hardware problem- this is not Nintendo, the 360 has a multitude of problems that are not Red Ring (disc read errors, ethernet port, power brick). Also, you don't have to wait on Microsoft to send you a coffin and then wait again until it is repaired...and you don't get a refurb unit.
The only negative is once you do an exchange on your faulty console...you have to pay again for an extended warranty for the new console.
Hala Madrid!! (THE BIRD IS THE WORD!!) @ Dec 1st 2008 6:26PM
@killbot
You probably got a Falcon, right?
I think that only the 360 arcades got this new GPU.
WiiFTW @ Dec 1st 2008 6:30PM
Unfortunately you have to induce the RRoD sometimes to get service just because the warranty is so specific.
They'd be better off covering more problems than to cover only RRoD and have people destroying the innards of their consoles when there's only a smaller, uncovered problem.
El Capitaine @ Dec 1st 2008 7:41PM
I have Best Buy also.
However, the way they do exchanges -
they find your original purchase, give you that much in store credit, and then purchase the new one with it.
Xbox was $399.99 when I bought it. It broke two weeks ago, and the system is now $39.99.
New replacement plan plus applicable taxes = $63.
Meaning, I got a 60GB HDD, Kung Fu Panda, Lego Indy, a brand new console (unfortunately not Jasper), for -$40. Yes, I got $40 from Best Buy to spend on anything in the store because I got RROD.
Isaac @ Dec 1st 2008 5:41PM
I am considering getting an Xbox 360 but I will definitely wait until these become the defacto units and are in every store.
j.howlett @ Dec 1st 2008 11:15PM
i hear you but i want the elite for the hdd and the color. for now when i do get cash to spend it'll likely go towards games for systems i already own.
Tyba11s @ Dec 1st 2008 5:41PM

Now I'll wait for the holidays to clear out the old stock then finally get a 360.
BlackBeltJones @ Dec 1st 2008 7:03PM
I would have preferred Desperately Seeking Jasper
BennytheDroid @ Dec 1st 2008 7:34PM
I love it how this gimped loser couldn't even get the bag of cheetos out of the way. Thanks for promoting the stereotypes!!
roxy @ Dec 1st 2008 8:12PM
what is the manufacturer date for these 360's on the back of the system?
Stuart @ Dec 2nd 2008 3:08PM
My Jasper was manufactured on 2008-10-15.
Mark @ Dec 1st 2008 8:17PM
I picked up an arcade system 4 days ago, the manufacture date on the back is 10/23/08. And it DOES have the internal memory.
Mark @ Dec 1st 2008 8:19PM
Oh, and I forgot to mention that NXE was preinstalled.
KieferKuroi @ Dec 2nd 2008 11:09AM
Is the Sonic and 5 Live Arcade games bundle? I'm interested on picking an Arcade as well.
Patrick @ Dec 1st 2008 10:13PM
Seriously, why would someone want 256MB of INTERNAL built-in storage? This is cheaper for Microsoft, and could limit the ways a system could be modded (or could add new ways, we'll have to see). How is this good for the CONSUMER though? You can't take your INTERNAL 256MB flash chip to your friend's house. If your 360 gets RROD (which there is a pretty high chance it will at some point) how are you going to keep your game saves when you send your 360 in to get repaired/replaced? This is cheaper for Microsoft, but unless I'm missing something, doesn't benefit the consumer at all. Sure, they should just pony up another $100 for the Pro, but that's besides the point - Microsoft is offering the product.
XzaR @ Dec 2nd 2008 10:42AM
I still think its better, I mean you can still have a memory card if you buy it separately. I am not sure but I guess the NXE will run even faster if it is installed on the MU.
Matt @ Dec 1st 2008 11:21PM
My 3 year old original 360 crapped out Thursday (Thanksgiving) night and I went to Wal-Mart at 10:30 that night and bought an Arcade. It is the Jasper. Manufacture date of 10-18-2008, 150W slightly smaller and much lighter weight power brick and internal memory. It runs much quieter and cooler than my original.
Maurik @ Dec 2nd 2008 5:20AM
I bought an Arcade at the weekend, turns out it's probably a falcon, August Manufacture date.
Not too bothered to be honest, Falcon Rev 3 doesn't really get RROD anymore.
Would have been nice to have the internal storage so that I don't have to have the memory card on me if I take it round to a friend's house... but whatever...
GearSecond!! (Gamertag: xGearSecondx ) @ Dec 2nd 2008 7:59PM
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!
I KNEW I SHOULDN'T'VE BROUGHT MINE IN SEPTEMBER!!! JESUS FREAKEN-- IF I'D ONLY WAITED 2 MORE MONTHS....

Joystiqs community should do the Party talk feature with eachother (if no ones already doing that). Some one friend me please? ;__;
gv @ Dec 19th 2008 12:01PM
I picked up a Jasper over the weekend at Fry's. It was actually a Pro model to my surprise! They were out of Arcades, so I was just curious in checking out the Pro. When I looked at the cutout, I saw the 12.1 v rating on the 12 v rail, I thought it was too good to be true. Got it home and the same rating was there at the power input. Fry's had stacks of Pro's...Houston,TX 59 S at Belfort.
