Microsoft working to fix NXE audio issues
Some Xbox 360 users who updated to the New Xbox Experience have reported hearing only the sounds of silence through their HDMI cables (the phenomenon, not the song). The problem appears to be caused with older monitors and devices that are not compatible with a new HDCP driver found in NXE.
Speaking to Shacknews, Microsoft said, "We are aware that a handful of Xbox LIVE users are experiencing audio issues, and are diligently monitoring this issue and working towards a solution." No timeframe for the fix was given; in the meantime, you might want to dust off those antiquated component cables.

Hey MS, when you release this patch, also make it so we can remove that "spotlight","Events" and all the other spam channels. KTHXBAI.
Tiptup300 @ Dec 2nd 2008 2:10PM
Or at least be able to set the default channel.

I had to shitcan my HDMI connections to both my Xbox and my PS3 a while ago because my TV (a SONY, BTW) decided it couldn't play nice with that HDCP DRM bullshit. :( Maybe this patch will fix that too.
gwangi @ Dec 2nd 2008 1:15PM
I had a problem with HDMI audio on DVDs with my HDCP. Once the new dash came out it fixed the problem.
Cellien @ Dec 2nd 2008 2:18PM
I had an issue too with a 3 year old LCD having handshaking problems via HDMI. Luckily, I've since upgraded. Some sucker bought my old 32" LCD for his Wii thinking the Wii was HD! XD
Vol @ Dec 2nd 2008 3:11PM
Yeah Cellien,
Those Wii buyers are suckers aren't they?

I had no idea this was happening. My equipment isn't exactly brand new, so I must be lucky. Any word on just how old the hardware in question is?

Hey, MS, while you're at fixing the 360's audio issues, how about you make bass come out of my subwoofer when I play stereo mp3s in digital 5.1 mode? The Xbox reps I emailed tried to tell me that this was a 'feature' and that you needed mp3s encoded with a separate bass track for bass to work. Unfortunately, all mp3s I've ever seen are encoded in 2.0 stereo, not 2.1 stereo, so they're just making excuses to cover an obvious bug. Of course bass plays just fine when I switch my audio out to dolby stereo, but having to do that manually everytime is just stupid.
squeevi @ Dec 2nd 2008 2:21PM
I've been wondering about this forever. I play a lot of music on my xbox and always wondered why the bass never worked. Never had the motivation to ask MS though, lol. I want a fix for this too, damnit!
Vidikron @ Dec 2nd 2008 2:50PM
How does that even happen? If the MP3 is stereo then the bass should be part of the 2 channels. At that point it's up to your receiver/sound processor to redirect bass below your set cut off frequency to the sub. What you're describing makes it sound like the lower frequencies are being filtered out somehow. I have a 360, but I use my PS3 for media playback so I've never noticed this issue.
AirIntake @ Dec 2nd 2008 4:34PM
Well, what it seems to be doing is sending the full frequency range to the left and right speakers, without filtering out the bass and sending that to the sub. Because my left and right speakers cannot reproduce frequencies that low, there's no bass. When I switch to dolby stereo on the 360, it just sends 2.0 channels to my amp instead of 5.1 channels, and then my amp filters the bass and sends it to the sub itself. What's sad, is that you can tell that Microsoft NEVER ONCE played an mp3 in 5.1 mode during testing, or else they would have definitely noticed this issue.
SneezyPorcupine @ Dec 3rd 2008 12:58AM
Oh wow. Calm down with the shit talking. Maybe they did test it, and just maybe, MAYBE there are SO many combination of speakers and receivers out there that it would be next to impossible for them to test it all!
I play music on my 360 in 5.1 mode all the time and the bass redirects perfectly fine. Bass sounds crisp and it redirects the speaker audio to all 7 speakers if I use the reproduction mode (my system = Harman/Kardon 7.1 Surround).
Damn, you people are quick to blame anything and everything.
AirIntake @ Dec 5th 2008 7:41PM
@SneezyPorcupine
If my setup is to blame, then why does my bass work just fine in every game? Why does the bass work when I manually set the output to dolby stereo from dolby digital 5.1? Since manually switching works fine, then why can't the 360 manually switch when it detects a 2.0 mp3 audio source? Do you use a separate sub, or are your speakers large enough to do the bass themselves? If you don't have a separate sub, there's your answer as to why you don't have the problem. I'd blame my setup if my setup was to blame, but it isn't.
Brazell @ Dec 2nd 2008 1:41PM
Yes! Paul Simon! I hate art.
But, really, the cover for "There Goes Rhymin Simon..." which may be the worst cover of any musician of all time, would be better.

NERV @ Dec 2nd 2008 2:45PM
Why dust off your component cables? I use hdmi for my video and an optic cable for my sound until I get a new hdmi receiver
Mark @ Dec 2nd 2008 3:21PM
I run my audio through optical into a surround sound system, no HDCP. However since the NXE every so often when I turn on my box I get the boot up sound and then nothing. No menu sounds and no audio for games or movies A reboot tends to fix this. Anyone else experiencing this?
CesarSalad @ Dec 3rd 2008 3:03AM
yea me too, and it makes me mad
ChiTownRuler23 @ Dec 2nd 2008 3:45PM
ey that patch better be smaller then 20MB cuz my 13G HDD is running out of space
serotoninzero @ Dec 3rd 2008 2:21AM
My TV is dumb and won't pass on 5.1 from HDMI to optical out to my receiver so I have to run a seperate optical cable from my xbox anyway. So I haven't noticed yet either, but my TV is brand new so maybe it doesn't have the issue anyway.
Brent @ Dec 2nd 2008 4:27PM
WOW wtf
that is messed up. HDMI rocks. How can you put up an update like this and not have it HDMI compatable.
uggg I don't have HDMI out because i have one of the original xbox 360's that has already gottan the red ring of death but fixed by microsoft and works fine but why do they keep doing a Plaxico (new expression for shooting yourself in the foot) to themselves.
I feel sorry for all the HDMI users out there.
But I must say I still love my xbox 360 over all my other consoles like wii and ps3.
So much is said for game play and xbox live

Still using Component over here, only because my TV's single HDMI port is already occupied by my PS3. Thinking about buying a KVM-like device for it, wonder if it'd be worth it though?
Premature ejaculation man @ Dec 2nd 2008 5:38PM
Its the thing I hate about NXE. So much so that I prefer the old dashboard because It don't have to switch tabs to tell the xbox I want to play a fucking game or see my friends.
Sora3087 @ Dec 2nd 2008 5:55PM
-take off hard drive
-turn on system(wait for main menu)
-put hard drive on WHILE the system is running(safety feature automatically resets the system so as not to ruin the drive)
ta-da sound on HDMI
you have to do this every time you turn of your system though
taz @ Dec 3rd 2008 8:25PM
I use hdmi and I dont have any problems.
Robert @ Dec 2nd 2008 7:47PM
If you're having this audio problem, you can still use your HDMI cable and run the audio through the audio splitter that comes with the elite or you can order it from MS. I know that's not helpful to even half of the people with the problem, but if you do have access to the splitter you can view in optimal resolution and still enjoy the sound.
CesarSalad @ Dec 3rd 2008 3:00AM
that is true bullshit, I just got me a brand new fucking 46" HDTV and the fucker went silent on me, I almost returned the fucking tv. thank god i read this
CaptainProtonX @ Jan 22nd 2009 8:30AM
So, check this out.
I have Dell PC, PS3 and 360 hooked up to my Philips 42 LCD via individual HDMI cables.
So, if I boot the 360 first, there is no audio. My TV menu will clearly show no outbound audio signal from the system. Now, and this is the cool part, if I then boot the PS3 or PC, they too will not have an audio signal.
Gets better.
If I boot the PS3 or PC first, they will have an audio signals to the TV. After the PS3 or PC is turned on, I then turn on the 360. Low and behold, the 360 now has audio. I repeated this boot pattern multiple times with different HDMI 1.3b cables and observed the same exact behavior.
I'm not a HDMI expert. If someone can extrapolate some sense to the madness, that would be great.
