Ready 2 Rumble Revolution punching out Wii in March 2009
Though we don't know much at the moment, CVG is reporting that Atari will release Ready 2 Rumble Revolution on the Wii in March of next year. In case you're among the sad few unfamiliar with the franchise, Ready 2 Rumble was a cartoonish boxing game ... really Facebreaker before Facebreaker was Facebreaker. (Oh, and before you panic, we captured the pic above from one of those older R2Rs.)
The series has typically featured mini-games to train your boxer like pill popping and weight lifting, as well as celebrity cameos like Michael Jackson and Hillary Clinton. They've been replaced in R2RR by David Beckham, Brad Pitt and John Travolta. Go figure.

So much for the return of Atari.
You'd have thought that the complete flop that was Facebreaker would have shown them that the public can't really be bothered with cartoon boxing games anymore.
Unless, of course, this project was initiated when Facebreaker was announced, and is just a jump on a burning bandwagon.
Kinda like how Dreamworks used to put out a very similar movie to whatever Disney were doing.
Antz/Bugs life. And so on.

Cartoony boxers isn't the problem, the crappy gameplay was. If Punch Out! stays true to it's roots I will pick it up day one.

They're going to have trouble competing with Wii Sports and Punch Out!!
Good luck sirs!

This or Punch Out?
In a perfect world I wouldn't have to choose because I'd already have Fight Night Wii.
BrokenBycicle @ Dec 2nd 2008 10:47AM
As long as the gameplay stands up, I would definitely give it a go. And having online would make it an almost definitive purchase, although I am aware of how unlikely it is to happen.

Punch Out! or GTFO!

That rhymes so it must be true.
Chin-Poh @ Dec 2nd 2008 11:04AM
Damn, I haven't played R2R since it was a launch title for the Dreamcast, pretty good game.
Wiinterfang @ Dec 2nd 2008 11:32AM
Yeah I remember playing the demo over and over again :D.
I love Afro Thunder.
Shagittarius @ Dec 2nd 2008 11:16AM
Those graphics look pretty good for a Wii game...might have to pick this up.

Sorry, but it just seems so...whats the phrase I'm looking for...last generation?
MowDownJoe @ Dec 2nd 2008 11:32AM
Hell, yes! Loved R2R:R2 on the Dreamcast! I'm looking forward to this, and the inevitable ability to play as Obama. Let's hope that fat Italian guy makes a return, whatever his name was. I typically played as him, and mostly just spammed his two-handed overhead smash... it worked okay, except against Mr. Musclebound Announcer boss.
Gaucho @ Dec 2nd 2008 11:33AM
I'm not trying to start a flame war or anything but is it just me or did this game look better on the Dreamcast? might just be me. . .

For all we know, the pic is FROM the DC version.

Strange enough, because if i had to make a bet, i would put money down on Punch-Out!! in March, and it's doubtful R2R could compete in that matchup.
Technically the game is simply announced as "2009" but Nintendo revealed it, so unless that was a break from their new system, the game can't be further than Q2 at the absolute latest, and unless it's a motion plus title, they'll probably want to get it out the door before Wii Sports Resort, which will most likely be in May

Fight Night Wii + dual wiimote w/MotionPlus support = win.

I enjoyed R2R back on the Dreamcast... but with Punch-Out!! on the way for Wii, it seems like this was announced a bit too late. But, who knows, if both are good, then I don't see why I couldn't get both.

Looks like Kotaku got a selection of early screenshots from the new R2R:

Looks a lot shinier than the previous two games.
