"But despite PoP having lots of negatives ("too easy", mediocre and sparse combat, feels like too many quick-time events), PoP scores really well."

Probably because it has lots of positives too. Also, don't confuse an inability to *die* with an inability to *fail*. :)

I'm shocked this game got good reviews - I really liked the new first PoP (Sands of Time), but the series kind of fell after that. If the movie gets good reviews too, my head will explode.

The Two Thrones was the best game in the series, I thought. I understand if you didn't stick around that long, though.

Actually, now that you mention it, I had heard that that game was good, but never got to play it after being so dissatisfied with Warrior Within. Maybe I'll have to check the local game store's bargain bins for that one.

Awesome! I recently purchased Folklore for the same reason as the Gamespot review stated here...it's not the most difficult game, but it is an impressive design nonetheless.

All the same, I can see how this discourages PoP fans...it's not a $60 purchase in my eyes, but for $20 on half.com, it wouldn't be so bad.

Yea, that's how I feel. It's a nice change of pace to add a game like this into the mix, especially with the gorgeous visuals and atmosphere. Though I too will wait until the price comes down, not just because it's easy, but I have a lot of unplayed games lying around.

Games like this further support my mantra of "Rent current gen, buy last gen."

I'm really looking forward to playing this, but I just can't justify paying $60 for it. I'll get it from Gamefly eventually and play it until I'm done with it. In a couple of years when this game is cheap, I'll get it used at retail.

Right now I'm buying all the games I played and loved from the last generation. I can get quite a few Xbox, PS2, Gamecube games for $60!

I'm in much the same boat as you, Cheesecake, although I purchase more "early this-gen" than "last-gen"...all the same, I got Folklore, CoD4, and Uncharted for the price of a single new PS3 title at retail. :-)

Jakka:

You will not be disappointed, friend. SoTC...another great game I fell in love with, but bought too many games at the time to finish it. Perhaps that will be a holiday project.

I kind of find it silly that some people are simply advoiding it simply because you can't die. As long as it's fun, I'll give this game a shot. Also the game is gorgeous, which is one of the reasons why I want to buy it.

I wouldn't say most people are avoiding it completely rather than avoiding it until it's less than $60. I'll play this game eventually, I'll just have to wait until it's cheaper since I don't feel the $60 is justified personally.

Say what you wanna say about this game.. I'm Loving it!!! Just played through the openening and the start of the world map and I know I'm in for something good! A mature platformer for me. Controls are on point! and I wish more games would use the other analog stick for camera control! Loving IT!

I don't want a checkpoint system, even if it is well disguised! I want a rewind time system.

Checkpoints are annoying as they take you back to the beginning of the section... i'd much rather rewind the difficult bit.

Of course, that'd make it even easier.. and then people would moan even more...

God, some of these reviews just bring my piss to a boil. I don't understand how some of these people got their jobs.

In every game you play today where you can "die," every single one, dying is nothing more than a minor inconvenience. It sends you back to a checkpoint you passed less than a minute previous. Elika saving you in PoP serves the exact same purpose, she just does it without an obnoxious loading screen and an animation of your character getting splattered everywhere. Congrats to 1-up for understanding this, and middle fingers to everyone else for allowing themselves to be misled by moronic preconceived notions about what constitutes "failure" in a video game.

Games have been getting easier, yes. But idiot reviewers decide that now is the time to start complaining about it, and this is the only game they're going to focus on? What about Bioshock? What about Dead Space? Most hardly didn't say anything about how mind-numbingly easy those were. Or Brawl, where they actually complimented Nintendo for taking out things that were difficult to do from previous games.

When I'm designing a game myself one day I'll have to remember... If I want a game to be challenging or rewarding make sure to have nasty snapping noises or blood on the screen to signify failure. Otherwise people think nothing happened. -.-

I miss the time when you would die if you wouldnt have paid attention to the trap etc... I think there isnt many people here that played those first POP games. Lots of puzzles, traps (i used to love the saw cutting the Prince's head off :-D )
And you had a time limit to do the game.
Today is everything very very beautifull but even Sands of Time's series was really easy. But i will play this one, just because I love the franchise. But in my opinion they could keep the Prince's game sow: the difficulty.

I played one of the very old Prince of Persia games as a kid all the time. I mean, literally, about 11 years ago when I was about 4, the first video game I EVER played in my life was one of those old Prince of Persia games. It was very fun, and even as I got older, very challenging (and of course without checkpoints each death was just ruthless). Though I like games with some challenge, I honestly got the new PoP because I was curious about its art style. I mean, literally, it may seem sad but I bought a game for the sole purpose of having some nice eye candy that also happened to be a game. And, actually, it isn't that bad. Yes, I agree, it is too easy sometimes. The "prince" moves pretty slow. He does so much for you that most of my "deaths" area result of pressing the "A" button reflexively to do something and having the guy just jump off the wall because he would have done that automatically. But still, so far I've seen an incredible amount of dialogue between the two characters. There are some cheesy lines thrown in, but there really is some good, pretty funny stuff in there. And, naturally, the game looks just completely gorgeous. You even get camera control via the second analog stick which I absolutely LOVE. When I play it, I just get sucked in to it as well.

So, really, though the game may be devoid of difficulty, it isn't a "bad" game. It's just different from the old Prince of Persia's. If you forget about the whole "Prince of Persia" title, the game gets a lot more enjoyable since you don't expect the same gameplay from both.
