Yes, we want to believe. The Uncharted 2 teaser trailer was so spectacular, it chilled us to the bone. While we just assumed it was a CG trailer, Gamezine is making us think differently. Richard Diamant, Naughty Dog's Lead Character Artist, told Gamezine; "Yes, the trailer was all rendered real-time in our engine."
Really? That's surely way too much snow to be rendering in real-time. We're going to take this news with a grain of salt -- but we're really hopeful that we'll all be thoroughly blown away by the Spike TV awards.

You could tell from the character models, lighting/shadowing and aliasing that it was real-time, but what threw me off (and it sounds like you guys also) was how well done the snow was. Great to hear the confirmation. They've got some talented guys over at ND.

That's weird. I thought it was realtmie from the start and the main thing that gave it away to me was the snow LOL. Who cares though? Can't wait to play it!

Yeah, I'd be very surprised if that was CG; the only reason they'd show something CG is if the engine wasn't in a complete enough state, and they wanted to get the hype train rolling *very* early.
Considering ND have been silent since Drakes Fortune, you'd have to assume this has come way further than that.

First of all he's bleeding everywhere is expression could be anything.... Second no, It's obviously something in the particle class, wouldn't be surprised if they dedicated a whole cell to rendering the snow, certainly is impressive.

So...when someone bleeds his left eye goes crazy while the right stays in focus? cool i want to bleed so i can do the paris hilton eye :P
It will be great that they dedicate a cell to the snow. That sounds more logic
Also i hope the game its not always in the snow :S what i loved about Uncharted 1 was the enviroment.

The cut scenes in the original Uncharted were pre-recorded (they weren't played by the game engine on the PS3 -- they may have been rendered in real-time originally, but they were just video files on the disc).
I'm less impressed by the falling snow (which could be easily created by a 5 or 6 2D planes containing snow flake textures and some puffy cloud-like snow clouds) and more impressed by the snow on the ground that deforms as Nathan walks through it. It's not unheard of in games (Lost Planet), but it seems particularly well done here.
The fact that a cut scene is rendered in "real time" doesn't necessarily mean that all of the effects you see there will be included in the game. A lot of it (like the snow deformation) could be pre-defined.
Still, it's not like anyone should expect Uncharted 2 to look BAD.
I'm not surprised at all that the trailer above is real-time. There's only one character, not much of a background, and aside from Nathan and the snow, there's not a whole lot of animation going on. It could be done pretty easily in real-time.

Correct. Some of the most recent high profile games, including Gears of War, Uncharted, and even Metal Gear Solid 4 (to a far lesser extent) have pulled this "trick" for at least some of their cutscenes.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about the use of enhanced "realtime" cutscenes, and I prefer them well over the overly-polished CGI cutscenes that differ drastically from the game's actual graphical qualities. However, most people don't seem to realize that some of these are, by definition, prerendered, even if the majority of the graphics used to create them were done so using the in-game engine.

In the original Uncharted, couldn't you swap character models in the cut scenes? That would mean they were being rendered in real time. MGS2 had that as well. The choreography and the recording and whatnot may all be done well in advance, but the actual composition of the scene is created right then and there--as evidenced by the interchangeability of the character models--so therefore it is real time.

I'm pretty sure you couldn't swap character models in the cut-scenes.
But the proof about the cut scenes is here:
http://www.ripten.com/2008/01/17/richard-diamant-uncharted-interview-part-1-background-and-character-creation/
There's a question regarding the cut scenes, and the fact that they're stored on the disc as HD movies, and are not generated in real-time on the console.
That's not to say that the console COULDN'T run the cut scenes in real time...just that they weren't.

In the original, if the cutscene said "skip movie" when you pressed start, it was a movie. If it didn't say that, it was real-time. I would say about 40% of the cut scenes were rendered real time. You could tell these even easier by selecting an alternate costume (like wetsuit, or the baseball shirt you can activate with a key sequence). Then in the real-time movies he would be wearing the alternate costume and in the pre-recorded ones he'd be wearing the original outfit.
Also, in the real time ones, he has the right weapons on his back and you can see bonus items glitter in the distance if you haven't picked them up yet.
My friend at Sony tells me the ones that are movies are only movies because they load the movie from hard drive while they read the data for the next scene from the BluRay. The movies were made by real-time rendering.
True? I dunno, they don't look that much different from the in-game ones, so it could be the case.

Uncharted 1 cut scenes were all rendered in real time. Just like MGS4.. It's just motion captured. They are not recorded movies on the disc.

Yes, they are movies on the disc. The way you can tell is to go to the main menu and select the cutscene from the menu. It will instantly start playing without loading any level, model or texture data. Any cut scene you can play from that list is a pre-recorded movie on the disc. It was probably originally rendered in real time, but not when you play it.

The original Uncharted did amazing things in real time, so no doubt with ND's experience they might actually pull this one off. Heck, it was the first time I can recall when the actual gameplay may actually have looked better than the pre-rendered cutscenes.
And it was all done without a hefty 5 GB install or loading times during gameplay. The Jak games did this on the PS2 as well. They're well-versed coders alright.

It is a great looking trailer, but I don't know how some of you are surprised, the first Uncharted's cut scenes looked phenomenal as well running in engine.

Well, technically, the original Uncharted was playing back movies that were rendered in-engine and post-processed. So..they were *kinda* in-engine FMV.

funny thing about that, is the Real-time in game was better looking than the actual cut-scenes..
For example:
The first time you stumble upon the submarine in the river.
When it goes to cutscene it gets a little grainy and compressed... and the lighting is off a bit (still beautiful but a little over processed if that makes sense?)
as soon as it goes back to real-time playing the colors cool off and smooths out... and lighting looks correct.

I was happy to hear it was real-time, but not too surprised, Uncharted looked phenomenal, and I never doubted the power of the PS3! Besides, while the snow looks amazing (especially the deformation, WOW!), after (MGS4 SPOILER, maybe), Act 4 shadow moses in MGS4, I dont see this being very different. Cant wait!
