Next Tony Hawk won't be played 'with a controller in your hands'
Though we'll leave the exact placement and nature of the controller for you to figure out, Activision is insistent that the item used to beat the Tony Hawk skateboarding franchise out of it stale stupor won't just be any ol' paddle. "You're not going to be playing this game with a controller in your hands," the company teased at a recent, in-game advertising summit.
We've heard mumblings of a new peripheral before (the new DS game already has a confirmed tilt function), but are no closer to understanding just what the device is and how it works. Our highly educated guess? A giant plastic skateboard. For a skateboarding game. Is that pushing it?

Tony Hawk Underground was the last good Tony Hawk. And 4 was the best by far. Everything after those just suck.
DWells55 @ Dec 4th 2008 11:25AM
I dunno, I'd say THPS2 was the best.
WiredKnight @ Dec 4th 2008 12:23PM
I think the title of this article should leave out the part with the quotes.
Dirty @ Dec 4th 2008 10:02AM
I refuse to buy anymore peripherals, my living room is starting to look like a kids play room. Its disgusting.
Bye Tony Hawk.... Hello Skate.
SKI @ Dec 4th 2008 12:05PM
But Skate is doing it too, Skate It anyone?
tmacairjordan87 @ Dec 4th 2008 1:11PM
I think he meant the good skate games.
dsub @ Dec 4th 2008 6:26PM
Skate It doesn't count. We are talking about the real Skate, not the half-assed one on the Wii and DS.
baby sea tuna @ Dec 4th 2008 10:04AM
I think I'm done buying peripherals this generation. If Tony Hawk can't play nice with a controller I already own, then no sale.
Oh, who am I kidding, I haven't bought a THPS game since the PS1 days and I don't plan on starting now.
Huey2k2 @ Dec 4th 2008 10:11AM
Fuck. I wish game developers would stop assuming that people don't want to use controllers anymore. I like controllers, I don't like peripherals, and I barely like motion control.
Lee @ Dec 4th 2008 10:29AM
BZZZT no.
I don't like using regular game controllers any more so I'm all for this.
Har har.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Dec 4th 2008 11:30AM
Well I don't like having to pay a gajillion dollars so I can have a bunch of Fisher Price toys around my house just so I can play the damn game!
thinktank @ Dec 4th 2008 10:12AM
Do you hear that sound? It's the sound of Activision's desperation. As if it wasn't bad enough that they dragged out poor Tony Hawk, drumming in a retard helmet, to sell guitar hero world tour!
Seriously Activision, spend your time and money on making a better game, not simply trying to sell us more embarrassing crap to look like a tool using/standing on in our Mom's basement.
Sidebuster @ Dec 4th 2008 10:12AM
Underground 1 was the first game I beat in a long while when it came out. I liked Project 8 also, but never got to finish it. I always been a fan of skating games (since I used to skate but stopped because I don't like getting hurt).
Sidebuster @ Dec 4th 2008 10:15AM
Wow what a useless comment... Let me finish what I was gonna say.
BUT, this time I am gonna go for skate 2 and that's not even considering the thought of any perifs. That is the dumbest idea I have heard for a game in a long time. For shame Tony Hawk...
For Shame....

SOMEBODY PUT THIS BLOGGER DOWN
HIS IDEAS ARE MUCH TOO RADICAL
xFenixKnightx @ Dec 4th 2008 10:18AM
WTF have you done NINTENDO?!!!
MowDownJoe @ Dec 4th 2008 10:21AM
Guitar Hero was what launched peripheral-mania, dude, and that was released before the Wii.
AwesomeTown @ Dec 4th 2008 10:21AM
Power Glove, ftw.
I hope they make a new one.
GearSecond!! (Gamertag: xGearSecondx ) @ Dec 4th 2008 10:34AM
BAWWWWWWWWWWWWW
Lord Negatron @ Dec 4th 2008 10:36AM
ROFL same thing i thought!
Mr Khan @ Dec 4th 2008 11:37AM
If they're making the snobcore squirm, they've done the world a service
tmacairjordan87 @ Dec 4th 2008 1:36PM
Too bad in the end they sacrifice the quality of the game just to make those people squirm.
So in the end who really loses?
Mr Khan @ Dec 4th 2008 1:47PM
who loses? obviously this mysterious class of "hardcore gamer"
which is, again, fine by me
dsub @ Dec 4th 2008 6:31PM
Wasn't buying it before, definitely not buying it now.
Do yourselves a favor Activision. Just make this version for the Wii. Soccer moms worldwide will eat it up as "exercise for their kids" as opposed to just buying them a real damn skateboard or taking the little bastards skiing. This way they don't have to worry about watching them and they can spend more time drinking appletinis and watching Dr. Phil and Oprah.
As for the 360/PS3 version, just copy the Skate control formula, update your graphics engine and you'll be good to go.
Dr. @ Dec 4th 2008 10:19AM
They're teaming up with the EndWar team to bring you voice controlled skating.
Skater 5 50/50 rail 8!
Kickflip!
Kickflip!
Kickflip!
Hashbrown Hunter @ Dec 4th 2008 11:32AM
Ollie dammit!
OLLIE!!!!!!!!
Deeznuts420 @ Dec 4th 2008 3:15PM
BAILLLLLLLLLLLL!!
Genisus @ Dec 4th 2008 10:48AM
Skate set the standard in this respect, and yea, I know I'm gonna get on some stupid thing other than a controller at my age! Sorry TH.....sticking with Skate!
What I want to know is, is where is a freestyle BMX game made like Skate!!!! Comeon! You all know you want one!
dsub @ Dec 4th 2008 6:33PM
agreed.
Lord Negatron @ Dec 4th 2008 10:42AM
OMG i heard for Gran Turismo, Sony is throwing away the controller too! Instead you have to use a "PowerWheels" sized vehicle with rumble seats, and shifter.
Only 2 models available for GT release at this time:
1.Pre owned 86' Honda Civic
2.Ferrari Enzo.
THIS IS MADNESS!!
Lord Negatron @ Dec 4th 2008 11:07AM
Not to worry guys i can get cornier. I'm just warming up. *rubs hands together*
Optimaximal @ Dec 4th 2008 12:21PM
What, are you cold or something?
Kye says: Know thyself @ Dec 4th 2008 12:35PM
MADNESS?... THIS IS SPARTA!
Deeznuts420 @ Dec 4th 2008 3:17PM
he didnt need help
James @ Dec 4th 2008 10:47AM
Why did they have to go such a crazy route? I am not going to buy a skateboard peripheral, jesus. Sigh, just remake TH2 and will be happy.
M @ Dec 4th 2008 10:56AM
Been there and done that with Top Skater.
DiL @ Dec 4th 2008 10:57AM
what are they planning to make a game like those crappy skating games in the arcade?
Hashbrown Hunter @ Dec 4th 2008 11:34AM
Sorry Activision, but in this case you should just ripoff Skate. A game doesn't need to be innovative to be good.
butaneko @ Dec 4th 2008 11:43AM
Actually the controller is just going to be a regular skateboard with a really long cord attached. After you go outside and shred your driveway you check the game and Bam Margera will tell you your score.
Luke @ Dec 4th 2008 2:39PM
Wireless dude.
Lord Negatron @ Dec 4th 2008 11:48AM
IMO i rather deal with Skates sense of realism then string together a bunch of tricks which place you on top of whirling helicopter blades, then kick flip off that into a rail slide down/UP the Eiffel Tower...
Fun at first Mr. Hawk...at first... :/
WiNG LifeInAGame.com @ Dec 4th 2008 12:11PM
You guys forget that DDR really kicked off the whole "here's a controller that takes up 17 square feet and breaks if you fold it!" fad
inb4 powerpad, hexpad, maxipad, etc
WampaCow @ Dec 4th 2008 12:31PM
This is the equivalent of forcing people to play devil may cry with a plastic sword peripheral.
Tony Hawk has always been a game that relies on price controls. You can't have precise controls on a plastic board.
Deck @ Dec 4th 2008 12:47PM
$100 Tony Hawk game here we come! Ugh...for god sakes, no.
As someone said above, they need to get it out of their heads that we don't like using controllers anymore. I love my the 360 controller and all these extra huge plastic controllers of various types are just getting way out of hand. STOP IT!
Kamizar @ Dec 4th 2008 1:17PM
Do I, do I, do I play Tony Hawk with my penis?
Luke @ Dec 4th 2008 2:40PM
Yes you do.
seakae @ Dec 4th 2008 2:23PM
Well technically I guess they're half right. Because I won't be playing it at all. I'll be playing Skate 2.
zombiejesus @ Dec 4th 2008 4:21PM
I miss back in the tony hawk 1-3 days when they used to go out and map real skateparks and use them in the games. I really miss those alot I think they lost the luster that used to be tony hawk when they bent over and took one from activision and started milking out like every few months with weird handheld ports that were clunky and weird. Most of all I just miss the old school game play none of this free world roaming world of warcraft quest garbage. Just give me 2 minutes and 10 objectives. This isn't that hard guys.
Nter @ Dec 4th 2008 11:41PM
Haaaa!
Deozaan @ Dec 5th 2008 4:07AM
How about the Wii Balance Board? It's already relatively the same shape.
