Killzone 2 release date is Feb. 27, 'similar timeframe' for PAL release
Ready to jump aboard the Killzone 2 hype train? Sony has announced that Guerilla Games' much-hyped PS3 shooter will infiltrate North America retailers on Friday, February 27, 2009 (via G4), where it will face fierce competition from pretty much no one. As for our friends living across the pond, a Sony UK spokesperson has told Video Gamer that the company is "targeting a similar timeframe for the release of Killzone 2 in the PAL regions." With 84 days until the North America launch, we anticipate a marketing blitz to commence just after the new year.

So that gives me about 3 months to beat Fallout 3, Motorstorm 2, STALKER Clear Sky, and Mercenaries 2 (yeah, my backlog stretches back that far).
AND get tired of Call of Duty, Left4Dead, and Far Cry 2 multiplayer.
I don't think I'm ready to jump on!
j.howlett @ Dec 5th 2008 12:08PM
i'll start collecting cans now
SimbaDogg @ Dec 6th 2008 11:56PM
haha, seriously such a good idea. find someone that'll give you @ least 75 cents a pound, and your in business.
Haggard @ Dec 5th 2008 12:11PM
Instant million seller I guess.
Hyams @ Dec 5th 2008 12:18PM
Not right away, no. Expect it to sell only around 500k first week.
colinbell @ Dec 5th 2008 12:24PM
My guess is 4-5 million overall sales, similar to MGS4. But why worry about sales, just enjoy the game. So much positive buzz about the game, and not just the graphics. And yes, expect some generic comments about it being a generic shooter from xbots (who, ironically, think the most generic of shooters halo 3 is the best game ever)
Vyse SOA @ Dec 5th 2008 12:34PM
@pheonix your joking right?, the game is in FPS view when you take cover, also there is a cover system (single player) also there is a badge system for multiplayer.
Name 3 FPS shoooters with FPS view in cover. If its so generic you wont have any trouble doing this.
Shmil @ Dec 5th 2008 12:34PM
May I ask what makes Halo so generic? I've always wanted to know. When I think of generic FPS i think of those games that play a bit like doom, all you have to do is pump enough lead into the enemy they go down. UT, Quake, and every other shooter I've played on the PC plays the same, whereas Halo stand out because of its shield system.
Now this is just IMHO, but the shield and headshot system that's used in halo is so much more sophisticated and the farthest thing from generic I've ever seen in a shooter game.
Shmil @ Dec 5th 2008 12:37PM
Rainbow Six Vegas 1, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, and if you count the optional 1st person view of GRAW then those would count.
Here's the thing, cover has been around forever. Just because it puts you in a different perspective of the cover (3rd) doesn't make it better than taking cover in 1st person
Shmil @ Dec 5th 2008 12:39PM
Wait-a-minute
a FPS game with cover from a FPS point of view? That's every god damned FPS ever made, unless you're too stupid to hide behind a wall that is.
Cellien @ Dec 5th 2008 12:41PM
Perfect Dark Zero (FPS) had cover. :)
colinbell @ Dec 5th 2008 12:44PM
For all those "visitor" xbots who are asking what on earth does this game offer to deserve so much hype - well, you are never going to find out ha ha.
But just in case if it helps - imagine Gears with the graphics up a couple of notches, 3 times as many players in multiplayer and yet none of the framerate slowdowns, no lag / host advantage in multiplayer, superb animations instead of crab movements, far superior lighting / physics, more multiplayer modes / classes, more realistic weapons and a more immersive story, thats all it offers. Too bad you ahd to settle for Halo 2.5 and Gears 1.5
Vyse SOA @ Dec 5th 2008 12:47PM
@shmil i wasnt saying its better i'm saying its different which you agreed to pointing out its not a generic shooter.
Thats like saying that just because the health bar is different with an extra shield in halo its still generic as a normal bar.
also PD had cover but not first person view it goes 3rd view
The-E @ Dec 5th 2008 12:49PM
@ThePhoenixLament
I really dislike you...I don't even know you...but seriously...there are fanboys like tmac and Fenix who are entertaining and take things light hearted but you are actually insane....they ban you for a reason!!YOU ARE WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE INTERNET!!!
OK...well anyway....that weather....
Cellien @ Dec 5th 2008 1:21PM
@Haggard: Lol, there's no way you've played Gears 2 if those are your assessments. Based on that post, your fanboy is showing. Gears 2 lighting is phenomenal and even shows off lighting situations from bright sunny days, to stormy nights, pitch black tunnels (direct spot lighting), and subterranean atmosphere. The textures are very clear as well. As I said before, having played through the game, it's rare you see blurry textures, even up close. I KNOW how impressive Gears 2 is in person, but the verdict is out for KZ2 until it's in our hands. But, as it stands, it's really not quite as impressive, based on the videos. That's not to say it won't be in the end, but I'm being extremely objective when I say I can't call it prettier than Gears 2 just yet.
Magetto @ Dec 5th 2008 2:11PM
Why are you getting upset over someone badmouthing a videogame over the internet? Are you trying to protect its feelings or something?
Hyams @ Dec 5th 2008 2:14PM
Games have feelings too...
Magetto @ Dec 5th 2008 2:17PM
LEAVE KILLZONE 2 ALONE, LEAVE IT ALONE. IT HAS FEELINGS, DAMN IT!
jajaes @ Dec 5th 2008 3:06PM
@colinbell
360 pwns PS3. Halo 3 was and will be the best game ever. Ur just pissed that a $200 machine can put out a game with better graphics (gears 2) than any game on ps3. K2 will suck. What games do you have? HAZE???
Duke @ Dec 5th 2008 4:00PM
"But just in case if it helps - imagine Gears with the graphics up a couple of notches, 3 times as many players in multiplayer and yet none of the framerate slowdowns, no lag / host advantage in multiplayer, superb animations instead of crab movements, far superior lighting / physics, more multiplayer modes / classes, more realistic weapons and a more immersive story, thats all it offers."
As always, you spew some opinions of what you want to be true and then act like its reality for the world. Your just a blind fanboy that nobody takes seriously.
I think Killzone looks to be great and I want it, but I don't need to pretend I have it and know everything as fact in order to make the case to the world.
Leo McKelvin @ Dec 5th 2008 4:50PM
I actually agree that gears 2 was a huge over rated terd ball. halo 3 was a complete evolution of the series and the best console game ever made to me. gears 2 is inferior in almost every way to gears 1. it was the definition of an over rated & over hype POS.
someone please tell me what make gears 2 any better than gears 1. what a few more polygons on the models? the hype of 100 locust on screen was a farce, the graphic look almost exactly the same, tons of lag issues with add in a 5 v 5, broken match make system, nerfed shotgun & the worst final boss in videogame history.
the only good thing about gears 2 was horde mode and that does not merit a purchase on its own. sorry but gears 2 is the most overhype game I ever play and did not come close to the original. it like playing gears 1.75 IMO.
i dont see hpw bitter ps3 fanboy can say that about halo 3. compare to the first teo games it is a huge leap in every way unlike gears 2. i will play gears 1 over gears 2, modern warfares over world at war and halo 3 over all of them.
Killjebus @ Dec 5th 2008 12:15PM
Sony needs to take a page out of their own past advertising expertise and MS's current advertising excellence. Nothing should be held back with this game. This game will wow anyone who sees it whether they plan on buying it or not. A Halo 3 type massive campaign would be the best thing Sony can do with this MUST HAVE game.
Whether you have a PS3, or a 360...there is no denying that this game has just reset the bar in graphics, lighting, level size and complexity, sound, showing real weight to characters and the items in the environment, and did I mention lighting?
If Sony does not pull out all the stops with this game, then they are stupid.
ThePhoenixLament @ Dec 5th 2008 12:20PM
You do realize what company you're talking about? Stupid is what sony is all about these days...
But at some point all the ads in the world won't help this game avoid it's inevitable fate.
Great inflated reviews...mediocre product...nice sales though. Probably better than any ps3 game to date (although I hope it bombs of course). But I am a realist and you're probably right that it will sell a million.
As far as graphics I think it's too close to call between this and Gears of War 2. Honestly it's a great game graphical. I'm not gonna lie about that. Just watching the trailers screams "high definition". But aside from that I don't see anything else spectacular about the game.
All the sony fanboys aboard the hype train yet!? Good! Lets Go!
Hyams @ Dec 5th 2008 12:30PM
"As far as graphics I think it's too close to call between this and Gears of War 2."
Ahaha, no.
Don't get me wrong, Gears 2 has some truly beautiful graphics, but, really, it can't be compared with Killzone 2.
xFenixKnightx @ Dec 5th 2008 12:33PM
Agreed Kjeeb
For them to have spent all this money on the dev of the game and not push the marketing would be a HUGE mistake!
ThePhoenixLament @ Dec 5th 2008 12:34PM
Lol uhh no hyams. You can lie all you want to and try to convince yourself but it's nothing better about this game graphically in my OPINION.
Hyams @ Dec 5th 2008 12:40PM
That's your opinion, and that's fine. Maybe you just prefer Gears's art style.
But from a technical stand point, Killzone 2 is far more impressive.
Cellien @ Dec 5th 2008 12:47PM
I'm SO WAITING for KZ2, but I'm not gonna say it looks better than Gears 2. From the recent many HD vids of KZ2 I've seen, its extremely good but some things aren't that impressive. Maybe it's the environments, as Gears literally looks like moving matte paintings. Whatever the reason, Gears 2 impressed the crap out of me while KZ2 so far has not impressed to that same level (maybe I'm becoming conditioned), but I will hold final judgment until I play it on my BIG ASS LCD! :D
Either way, the differences in graphics when they are this good (Gears 2 and KZ2) really is negligible. They both far exceed anything I've played (Sorry computer can't handle Crysis. :) )
Killjebus @ Dec 5th 2008 12:48PM
Here is an interview with some of the tech behind this game.
Asshat, are you still going to tell me that Gears looks just as good? I know you will but then Dubya said there were WMD's in Iraq, and we know how that one turned out don't we.
So what will be your excuse when we see GoW3 trailer at VGA's?
Cellien @ Dec 5th 2008 12:56PM
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/43367.html
Also, overall the game is outstanding, but the things like low-res textures in the videos on walls and even the guns are I think some areas that Gears definitely excels in. Blurry textures was something you almost never saw in Gears 2. But, some other things like animations and depth of field just look outstanding!
ThePhoenixLament @ Dec 5th 2008 12:59PM
killjebus...
God of War has been in development for like it seem FOREVER. Same damn thing with both Final Fantasy games.
Someone would have to be literally retarded to think that the graphics on all 3 of those games won't surpass Gears of War 2 or Killzone 2.
Personally I think Final Fantasy XIII will be the best looking of all 3. That's just me however.
I'm not sure what you were expecting me to say there? That God of War 3 looks ugly? Umm no. All we've see i s that short teaser which was CGI or something but still looked fantastic. Yet based on that I can safely say that the graphics of God of War 3 will easily surpass this generic FPS game.
el serpiente @ Dec 5th 2008 1:00PM
Wow, KZ2 is really making phoenix crap his diapers. LOVIN' IT!
Hyams @ Dec 5th 2008 1:03PM
Cellien: I can't comment, as I haven't seen the video yet (my internet's too slow to load it up, even in SD).
But I imagine those are just place-holder textures, rather than the final ones. The devs have already confirmed that low-res textures will be improved for the final release.
(Remember: there's still almost 3 months before the game releases.)
At any rate, there aren't many of those in the current Preview build anyway, based on the videos I've seen. Most of the textures are on a level with Gears 2's (which is a mighty fine achievement).
Killjebus @ Dec 5th 2008 1:03PM
For anyone worried about the voice acting and other minor issues, they are being fixed.

Hyams @ Dec 5th 2008 1:05PM
TPL: GoWIII hasn't even been in development for 2 years yet...
GoWII released in 2007, remember.
ThePhoenixLament @ Dec 5th 2008 1:07PM
el serp? what are you talking about?
What's so different in what I'm saying about this game that I haven't said about Uncharted, LBP, Heavenly Sword, or any of the way overhyped yet undelivering games that sony fanboys continue to obssess about?
Haggard @ Dec 5th 2008 1:07PM
Good graphics is not something that is opinion-based, it's quantifiable.
Gears 2 has some cunning design and good optimisation and it is definitely a good looking game - but the lighting engine is not much different from what was seen last console generation, and the textures are a bit muddy up close.
DangerMouse @ Dec 5th 2008 1:36PM
"For anyone worried about the voice acting and other minor issues, they are being fixed."
Well thank goodness for that, because what i heard in their last trailer was dogshit, but i find it hard to believe that it's just a place holder with less than three months to release.
Marius @ Dec 5th 2008 2:06PM
@ pheonix
what with you its like sony raped you and your mother, why you hate them so much. Im a PS3 fanboy but i do admit that Gears of War 2 is a great game but you just hate my lovely PS3(is it cuz you cant afford it and got stuck with that box that was only created to play Halo).
Bryan @ Dec 5th 2008 2:25PM
@ThePhoenixLament
How the hell has GOW 3 been development forever? GOW 2 came out last year, on a last gen system and you expect a nex gen sequel to be done in a year? Even Gears of War 2 with already finished engine characters models and all that took two years and for some reason you are saying GOW 3 taking forever... Halo 2 came out 2004 and Halo 3 came out 2007 but for some reason GOW 3 is only allowed to have less then a year of development?
Cellien @ Dec 5th 2008 2:33PM

Gameplay and Graphics aside, the sound for Killzone 2 is terrible in that video. The guns sound like nail guns, the grenades sound nowhere near right and it reeks of bad scripting. I really hate enemies that overstate pathos, like "For the Emporer!". They'd be much better served to just hire some decent writers just this one time.
Haggard @ Dec 5th 2008 10:20PM
You only have to look at gameplay videos to see a game's graphics. You're right, I've not played Gears 2, only looked at footage. Same for KZ2.
I'm a PC fanboy if that helps..?
Dirty @ Dec 5th 2008 12:16PM
I wont buy this until the multiplayer proves its worth the purchase. Gotta play it to see if all the hype proves true. Calender officially marked.

I'm just really impressed with this game overall. The campaign sounds great and the MP looks sweet as well. Futuristic COD FTW!!!
Hyams @ Dec 5th 2008 12:27PM
I wouldn't call it a futuristic Call Of Duty, as the gameplay is a bit different. Your character moves slower and with more weight, and there is an emphasis on the cover system.
Really, it looks more like a cross between Call Of Duty and Gears of War to me.
Gears of Duty, anyone?
