Watch X3F play Resident Evil 5 demo
39
Look, we're lazy. We're content to wait for the Resident Evil 5 demo to come to us. X3F? Sure, our Xbox brethren are lazy, too. But they're also fanboys. And fanboys leap at the chance to play anything -- no matter what the cost (in this case, a 48-hour Xbox Live trial code) -- before the other guys. So, without further ado ... (here's the part where you press "play.")

I downloaded the Japanese demo this morning and the addition of two player split-screen co-op is great. That being said, playing it has made me realize how far they have left their roots, as you fight countless waves of enemies. Perhaps it is just the natural evolution of things, but I actually prefer the Resident Evil titles prior to 4. Don't get me wrong, 4 was a great game, and 5 likely will be too, but Resident Evil has dropped it's survival horror gameplay to become more mainstream in the western market where shooters typically sell much better than conventional survival horror titles.

It had to grow up and leave the nest. Or, in RE's case, hallways and narrow underground corridors.

I think RE5 will be good, but it looks like RE4 with a graphic update and while thats not a bad thing...its not worth all the hype that its receiving. Not being able to move AT ALL while shooting is a down point in my eyes. I guess we'll see...

i agree with most things you said in the video, apart from the stoping to aim, it was the exact same in RE4 you just gotta time your reloads and get to know your gun.
call me an old school resi fan but i dont like the real time weapon changes the thing about the other RE's i liked was if you see somthing comming towards you, you know you have your inventory to go into and equip the correct items and plan how are you gonna take it down, or if your totaly getting raped by zombies you know you can go into your inventory and use an f-aid.
i gotta agree resi isnt survival horror anymore, but what ive seen and played of the demo this will be a great game and cant wait for the full release gotta be an early contender for game of the year

I did the whole japanese XBL thing and it doesn't let me download this demo. It looks so good. It looks like RE4.5 or whatever, but still so good.
Goddammit come out on the japanese PSN to make this easy for me.

I didn't know the game had 2 player split-screen until I started up the demo and saw the option for offline co-op. If it didn't have split-screen co-op, I would have considered passing this game up seeing as Killzone 2 comes out roughly 2 weeks earlier.

RE5 is releasing just before my St. Patty's Day birthday; I have to figure out a way to get a PS3 or Xbox360.

The game is great, but I found it to be a bit of a snoozer after playing L4D so much.

i dont have an x360, only a ps3, but i gotta say...is the game too similar to RE4 or what? the way Chris Redfield swings the knife and his various "jump over" movements are mirror copies of Leon's from RE4.
Enemies bend over the exact same way as well when hit by bullets.
not to mention the pistol sounds like a pea-shooter?
bear in mind i consider RE4 the greatest single-player game of all time, but this is really just RE4.5

Agreed. This idea that every game that comes out must be new and innovative is a bit ridiculous. With this kind of logic, then I guess Grand Theft Auto IV is basically just Grand Theft Auto 3.4, and Call of Duty 4 was just Call of Duty 1.4.
It's okay for a sequel to be like it's prequel, and there's no need for developers to totally reinvent the wheel with every chapter of a game franchise. I totally agree. Resident Evil hasn't always been about reinventing itself. It's been about good, challenging and solid gameplay combined with good storylines and characters and horrible horrible voice acting.

Co-op zombie games are the new fad... and I'm not complaining.

So because it controls like RE4, but has nothing else in common with RE4 in terms of story, characters, setting, etc. It's RE 4.5?
That must mean that every first person shooter after Wolfenstein and Doom is merely Doom/Wolfenstein vX.X

So the only changes made to any FPS after Doom were purely cosmetic or story-related.
And yes, the setting and story have NOTHING to do with RE 4, because it's a recurring male character and a new female character fighting poor, grimy African people in an African shanty town instead of a recurring male character and a new female character fighting poor, grimy Spanish people in a Spanish shanty town.

Here's what I don't get. Doesn't anyone else think that not being able to move while shooting is an outdated and unrealistic gameplay mechanic? If that is being done to maintain a survival horror feel, shouldn't we reject that notion? Plenty of games have already been made that allow you to move while shooting, and can still be terrifying and filled with tension. Don't you think a company like Capcom who has done survival horror for so long should be able to lose this archaic gameplay relic and still craft a title that maintains the tension that everyone wants?

How is it unrealistic? Arguably, it's more unrealistic to shoot while moving, as in real life, you won't be able to hit anything at all.

I'm not talking about running and gunning, I'm talking about being able to simply sidestep or walk quickly. Police/Military/Special Forces, can all do that and have to be able to do that to survive. Take Call of Duty or Gears of War. They aren't super-realistic, but you can at least move when aiming to shoot. Sure if you want to run in those games, you won't be able to hit the broad side of a barn, but at least you aren't frozen like a statue while you get mauled.

Oh you should all just quit your bitching XD This game is excellent. RE4 had the right idea to start changing for the better, and this game is a solid improvement on what was already great. Buyin' it the day it comes out.

I'm a huge RE fan (played and beat all the previous games), so I tried the demo. Holy crap, the controls are going to take me some re-adjusting to. In the years since RE4, I've played and gotten used to the control schemes of console FPS's and the Gears of War franchise. Needless to say, I got my ass kicked in the demo, but I'm going to keep trying!

The demo is decent, but it's basically the same level twice.
Enter level, enemies spawn, big guy with intimidating melee weapon enters. Shoot him 100,000 times.
I liked it in 4, because it was new. Now it seems like that's all they have for mid-tier monsters.
Hopefully there's more to it.

Anyways about the demo:
I was a huge, huge fan of RE4 (probably beat it 6-7 times total, some taking turns with my friend) and I really want to enjoy this game as much as RE4. However I dont see this happening.
The demo really was just alright. At least by myself. I dont like the whole idea of having this partner with you all the time. And it takes away alot of the tension that was created in RE4.
Now if you are being attacked by a chainsaw guy, you know that as you reload your partner will shoot, if you need health your partner can heal you. If there are zombies coming from in front and behind you, you can each knock them out. To me, it just isnt good.
Not to mention Co-op will just be cheap with some of the stratagies you will be able to use. One guy could knife while the other shoots them away. On guy could distract the chainsaw guy, when the other kills him.
Hopefully they can make this work out, however im really having trouble seeing this game live up to anyones expectations.
