Denki, the Dundee-based developer behind the well-received GBA puzzler Denki Blocks, might just be the Girl Talk of board game mash-ups. Their upcoming Xbox Live Arcade title, Quarrel, is an amalgam of three "off-the-grid" titles: Risk, Scrabble and Countdown (a popular UK game show). The game, which is Denki's first title in seven years, is reportedly about a year away -- but gaming news site Square-Go got their hands on an early build of Quarrel in order to see just how these three great tastes taste together.
The main objective of the game is to gain control of territories (in Risk-esque fashion). Skirmishes between players are hashed out in a round of Countdown, where players make words out of tiles, which are assigned different point values (ala Scrabble). Further strategy includes managing the number of "quarrelers" you have stationed at a particular territory -- more quarrelers means more tiles with which to form longer, point-garnering words. A game where vocabulary, not physical prowess, dictates strength? It's a pulchritudinous dream come true!

Actually, you wouldn't get many points for the word, "testicles"...

I'm interested but that sounds kind of convoluted.

It's not as complicated as it might sound - we're focused on making the game easy and quick to play.

Well until there's a standalone Scrabble game for the 360, I might go with this..maybe. If everything meshes well with each other.

We like to think it does mesh well, but then we might be biased. ;-)

After I posted my comment, I went back and read the article and it does seem rather simple and straightforward, I think I could get into it and I'm kind of looking forward to picking it up now.

As much fun as this may sound to some (me included), it sounds like games will take a long time and be fairly complex affairs (in terms of initial learning curve). Finding people to play this with you will be difficult. To use a real world example. it's very hard to get people to play Monopoly or especially Diplomacy because they take forever.
At least their Xbox Live code will be easy, as how hard can managing a 20 person lobby be? But in all seriousness, with such long games, they'll need to make any quit-outs counts as wins for the remaining player. Otherwise, you'll play for a couple of hours and then have some loser quit during the boring end-game (always the worst part of those games; see Risk) when one player is dominating the other. This happened to me the other day in Home, when I was about to beat someone in chess after they made a dumb move. I saw "Your opponent got up" instead of "Your opponent forfeited." As much as I love chess, that really turned me off the Home version. Imagine how pissed people will be when there are Achievements involved.

The length of the game is something we're focusing on quite heavily - we want you to be ablet to finish a game in a short period of time.
While we're not ready to talk more about the specifics yet, I can say that it won't take as long to play as a game of Monopoly or Diplomacy!

Glad to hear it. I love it when board game style games come to XBLA, because it's easier to find willing opponents online than in real life (my friends are not the board gaming type).

They should make forefits count as both a forefit and a loss, i.e. an achievement for 100 wins, and an achievement for 100 forefits by your opponents, i know what i'm saying dosen't make too much sense, but basically i'm saying that quitters should feel that they're not only losing but donating to another player, and that would give them a better reason to continue.(although you could get 2 friends who happen to quit on each other 100 times, but that would never happen on XBL now would it? ;) )
