There could be fewer gifts passed around at Electronic Arts' annual Christmas party as analyst Colin Sebastian anticipates the company may let go more employees in the wake of sluggish sales. While EA eliminated nearly 6% of its workforce last October, the Lazard Capital Markets soothsayer predicts that underperforming titles, including Rock Band 2, Need for Speed Undercover and Mirror's Edge, could likely lead to the company to make even deeper cuts.
EA's bottom line was able to keep from being totally dismembered, however, thanks to what the analyst calls "solid sales" of Dead Space, Left 4 Dead and FIFA 09. Even so, Sebastian lowered his third quarter outlook for the publishing powerhouse from $2.14 to $2.07 billion, leaving Scrooge McDuck with plenty to count over the holidays should Disney come knocking.

Yay to the First.
Halleleuia to the second.
Longer, yes.
Better, how can Left 4 Dead be any better?
Mind = Boggled

I think this was the case for one of the most memorable games I've played.
Katamari Damacy was released with a $20 price tag IIRC. I bought the game cause I'd heard it was fun to play and the gameplay was something new and exciting. I don't think I would have bought the game for 50 bucks but $20 was cheap enough to give it a try.

Dear EA, are you suprised?, I am going to take a wild guess on next years November Releases, Halo 3: ODST, Mass Effect 2, Assasins Creed 2 another Call of Duty, Bioshock 2? (Sony could pull a wild card and have a God of War game Ready, they probably at least a Ratchet game), oh and lost track of this one but when is FFXIII due?
EA what do you have to compete with any of those titles? and don't say Mirror's Edge 2 or you will be laying alot more people off next year then this one

MIrror's Edge was a good idea, but in practice, it was a frustrating mess of a game. I rented the game from Gamefly, and after an excruciating and frustrating playthrough, I returned it after 2 days.
I give EA credit for trying something new, but I can't forgive the terrible level design, the unforgiving combat, and the COMPLETE LACK OF PLAYTESTING.
I would NOT shell out money for the game. It's appropriate that the game had lackluster sales. Dead Space, on the other hand, was much better.

mirrors edge was all marketing and hype.
350,000 copies sold to date because of it.
if there was not any mirrors edge TV commercials, i dont think this game would have broken 100,000 sold.
now how many dead space commercials have you seen on TV?
not 1.

that probably pisses a company off when you spend millions on advertising a game, and then nothing on another game and it does much better..
heck that is deserving of layoffs IMO.
whoever messed that up and thought mirrors edge was the next 5+ million seller.
MGS4 and halo 3 were not advertised on TV as much as mirrors edge.

I'd actually buy Mirror's Edge if I could actually find a copy locally. What the fuck?
It probably would have sold better if it was longer, though. Games are too expensive to be paying ten dollars per hour of gameplay.
I'm kind of surprised at Rock Band 2, though. I guess it's true that game blog comments aren't a very good gage of popularity. All the "OMG RB2 RULEZ GHWT DROOLZ" is just annoying noise.

This isn't so bad. Just lay off the NFS people and keep the Mirror's edge and RB2 people.

Lets analyze the issues here:
Rock Band 2: The easiest of the group. You wanna know why nobody bought it? BECAUSE A FUCKTON OF PEOPLE BOUGHT THE ORIGINAL. And if Harmonix keeps the DLC compatable with both versions, only the "hardcore" and "1337" gamers will update. Sure, it may sound like a dick move, but I bet if Harmonix came out and said "you want all this new DLC? Buy Rock Band 2", I gurantee a whole hell of a lot more people would've slammed down the $60 for the game or $180 or so for the "Special Edition".
NFS: Undercover: What the fuck was EA thinking? If you're going to release awesome FREE DLC for Burnout every-so-often, DONT EVEN MAKE ANOTHER RACING GAME. Better yet, don't make a Burnout wannabe. The way to go would've been releasing it only on systems that didnt have Burnout, like Wii or PS2.
Left 4 Dead: Seriously, how many fucking shooters came out in this month alone? Besides a lack of advertising, this game suffered from "Why play this when I have Gears and Call of Duty" syndrome. Besides, its becoming ever more obvious nobody takes Steam purchases into account.
Mirrors Edge: Sure it was well advertised, but that doesnt mean it was GOOD advertising. If the only thing I knew about the game was based on the ads, I'd probably think it was another FPS. They could've at least mentioned the story (even though it sucked), or given some background as to why you were jumping on rooftops.
Dead Space: This one surprised me. It came out around Halloween, a good time for horror games. It had good advertising and lots of it. I think the reason it failed was that it was horror game. Not a lot of people want a game to scare them, they want the game to be fun and waste time.
TEH CASUALZ: Lets get this out of the way, ITS NOT THE WIIS FAULT NOR IS IT "CASUAL GAMERS" FAULT. Peggle and Sims 2 arent stopping Steam from having many paying customers. Viva Pinata and Banjo didn't stop Microsoft from making Gears 2. LBP didn't stop Sony from making Resistance. Animal Crossing isn't stopping Nintendo from making Sin & Punishment 2. The Petz series isnt stopping Ubisoft from making Prince of Persia or BG&E 2. Get.Over.Yourselves.You.Whiny.Twats.

Regarding the steam purchases of Left 4 Dead... EA doesn't own the rights to L4D, they just have a publishing contract with Valve for physical product. They can sell a million copies on Steam (a service that Valve developed and owns) and EA would never see a cent of it. EA, when talking about L4D only cares about THEIR sales of the game, not total sales.

I couldn't get through the first level of Mirrors Edge. It was complicated beyond belief trying to perform all the moves required by the game. I am guessing that most people gave up on this game out of pure frustration.

I beat Mirrors Edge pretty quick, and without dying (guess I'm just a natural)- see for yourself PSN: Thetruefiziks

Mirror's Edge is the only big budget release that I didn't buy this quarter. From the comments it doesn't look as if I made a mistake.

depends on what you like in a game. More of the same? Then yes, don't ever get Mirror's Edge. A unique and extremely fun game that has it's flaws? Then you missed out.
The story mode is not the greatest thanks to the combat (as I am sure you've read over and over) but the Time trial mode, which has more meat on it's bones than story mode, is pure awesome, and totally makes up for the story mode's faults. Let me put it to you this way... I loved Dead Space but regretted spending $60 on it since it's essentially good for one run through. Mirror's Edge on the other hand I cannot keep out of my 360's disk drive for more than a few hours before I _must_ go back in to try to beat my previous bests in time trial.

Quit setting your expectations so high EA. To me, all those games sold well. If you made at least $1 profit everything is ok.

Rock Band 2 is underperforming? I thought these guys were selling the game like crack at a failing rehab clinic. Didn't they put out some huge sales figures a couple weeks back? What the hell were they projecting? a built-in money printer in the mystery jack in the back of the drum kit?

Since I don't own any consoles, rest assured EA that I WILL buy Mirror's Edge on PC.

Maybe it would be best if Disney took over EA at this point. It seems like everything they do is intended to frustrate gamers, from spore's drm problem to Burnout Paradise's inability to use backup data on a identical gamer's (at least the same PSN) new ps3.
With spore, are they worried about pirating? They had to have known a stupid DRM move or similar would've made them huge targets. And if Burnout Paradise was anywhere nearly as good as Burnout Revenge, I would just play it from the beginning but it seems like they peaked with Revenge and I would rather sell Paradise than try to re-memorize my way through the open world races.

There are some very good points in here from you people, and most of you are very adament about your video games as I am too. Also some of these comments are very funny and make for good reading. Mostly I am happy to see that people are giving hell to the gameing industry for making shitty very cheap and short games to try and make a quick buck. So keep up the ass reaming!!!
