While gamers probably won't be flocking to Time for its list of the top 10 games of 2008, there's little doubt that the list will wind up under the scrutiny of plenty of non-gamers. The list is part of the "Top 10 of Everything of 2008' feature, which includes lots of top 10s, including things like the top 10 scientific discoveries (LHC FTW!). So what made the number one spot on Time's list? None other than Grand Theft Auto IV. Taking the second spot is the excellent XBLA platformer Braid, followed by Little Big Planet at number three. Heavy hitters like Gears of War 2, Spore and Dead Space also make the list. Alongside them are some stranger picks including a Flash game, an iPhone game and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.
Check out the list for yourself and give us your feedback on the list. We're just guessing, but we're betting there are some games in your top ten that aren't on the list.

WTF?! How did GTA IV, Dead Space and Spore make it but not FALLOUT 3 that's crazy.

Braid definitely deserves that #2 spot. Truly an exceptional game and quite beautiful. Best $15 one could pop on a game i imagine.
GTA:IV doesn't warrant best game of the year, loads of games were better.

Yeah, GTA 4? Game of the Week, maybe, not of the Year.

I think this game actually does deserve it..
i mean sure i found other games provided more fun, for me anyway, but this game was truly just ground breaking in my view.

GTA IV I can agree with. The game is a huge undertaking as you can iteracte with so much in the city and you are apart of it. The city itself seems to be alive, with weather, time of day, and other stuff.
BUT Dead Space, force Unleashed, and Gears 2 could've been left out. I thyink a much more deserving game is Mirrors Edge. It is a new franchise, and is a great concept and flows nicely. Yes it's short, but it's fun and it was done pretty well.
Another would've beend GH:WT, now I'm not a GH fanboy, but the create a song mode is pretty groundbreaking. I'm expecting RB to follow suite soon.

Star Wars Unleashed... really? what version did they play? I played the DLC missions the other day.. there was screen tear all over it..even the tears teared.. though it looked a little better, more stable.. except when movement was involved (that's patched & installed!).. still didn't feel a badass, nor 'unleashed'..
GTAIV... yeah it was good, but not quite as good as expected.. over zealous cops shooting you for a 'prang', & strange car physics.. (too much side to side, not enough roll..) - I played it through start to end, hear a lot of people just play it for a bit, my brother is only as far as the start of the second island..
Dead Space - well deserved
LBP.. dunno.. I doubt that would get 30 minutes out of me.. I'm sure Drakes Fortune or Wipeout HD were far better
Portal.. where was Portal, that was brilliant.. or is that last years?
Rock Band 2 over Guitar Hero WT.. I can't decide which yet.. though I prefer the look of GH's guitar, & RB2's premium drumkit.. though RB has At The Gates..
must of bought 24 games this year.. (mix of retail (some old) & arcade) in no certain order.. my 10 would be Tomb Raider Underworld, Gears 2, Dead Space, Portal:Still Alive, Castle Crashers, Ninja Gaiden 2, Lost Odyssey, (now I struggle) Left 4 Dead, Pokemon Diamond, Fable 2.. (there, 10 games).. my PSP & Wii have gathered dust for the most part of the year..

If you haven't played don't comment. LBP is an excellent game, Drake's Fortune is from 2007 and Wipeout is awesome but not GoTY

which is why I say "dunno".. it's not something that would grab me.. beyond that I'm saying I can't comment.. whereas Drakes I know I would complete that a few times, and get as far as I can on Wipeout, as I enjoyed the original back on the PS1.
Thanks for clearing up the 2007 bit.. I've been playing a lot of games, loads 08, some old, not always easy to remember when they all came out...

ugh enough of the hype for gta4, everybody already figured out the game wasn't revolutionary after all. barely evolutionary, imo. better graphics and cutscenes does not equal a better game

GTA4 is the GOTY....That I would throw at a zombie if I were being attacked. That I would use to put under my front wheels if I were stuck in the snow. That I would use as a jimmy to pick my lock if I forgot my keys. That I would trade in for Sonic Unleashed. That I would use as a filter if I ran out of coffee filters for my coffee. Etc.

I don't care what anyone one tells me, BRAID IS BAD. Not fun, not the least bit entertaining, I tried it, I played with my friends and laughed at the beginning when "Tim made a mistake" but that was all the fun we had. Puzzle platform, i dont hate them, I just can't find the cheap made BRAID to be any worth of #2, anyways I notice how gamers have turned on GTAIV, We loved it when it came out and now, people treat it like a girlfriend they would rather forget.

Braid is over rated, highly over rated. But GTA deserves all the props in the world. People hate on it now, becuase its the "cool" thing to do.
Posted: Dec 9th 2008 4:52PM petepete said
yea you may be right by saying braid is overrated if your talking about a game that is widely popular, but for those of us who enjoy a game that makes you think instead of mindlessly following a bad guy in a car and trying to shoot him down (in case you forgot, this was half of the gameplay in GTA4), the game was amazing.
quesadia:
of course you didnt like it when playing with a bunch of friends... first off, its not a comedic game, no matter what soulja boy tells you. secondly, its a game you need to focus all your attention on in order to complete. sure its not for everyone, but once you get into it, youll wish it didn't end so soon.

gotta disagree. GTA4 was the least fun game i've played all year. Saint's Row 2 was a light years more fun gaming experience. and if it wasn't the best in it's genre it's not GOTY in my not very humble opinion.
