Gears of War 2 sales surpass 3 million copies

There are a whole lot of Gears in the retail machine. Epic VP Mark Rein has confirmed that 3 million copies of Gears of War 2 have sold through (not just shipped to stores) worldwide since the game launched on November 7.

Edge Online cites an email Rein received from MS confirming "that Gears of War 2 sell-through surpassed 3 million units as of last week." This follows news from mid-November that the game had reached the 2m sold mark worldwide a mere five days after release.

Thats great news for Epic. Gears 2 is an awesome game.

But, Nothing beats the fastest selling machine that Halo 3 is. 5 million in 4 weeks. Gears 2 was 2 million shy.

Well at least we can all take comfort in the fact that it's a better game than halo 3.

In my opinion, it's the other way round.

IMO they're both terrible. Though at least Bungie made a good game with Halo 1.

I'd rather play something better. Something with gameplay, graphics and story. Not graphics and story (or just graphics with GoW2).

I'm glad you're just one of the very very few that doesn't like either. Umm, good for you? o_O

Anyway the game is a masterpiece. Yes there are flaws but damn it if it isnt the most fun Ive had in a long time. Campaign, Co-op campaign, Horde, Wingman, bots for practice or whatever, ch33voz can be earned offline, meat fucking flag, etc. Its a damn good package people!

I enjoy both games but I've found that I keep coming back to Halo 3 MP. There's something about Gears MP that I don't like, outside of Horde mode of course.

...and once again, Lee proves that he has no idea what he's talking about.

Thats how my buddies and I are, Guilty Fart. We love Halo 3 and COD4/WaW but always seem to go back to Gears. It's something about that up and in your face action that we love. Both are definately worthy of getting huge amounts of your playing time thats for sure.

Fenix, fess up, you bought 1 million of those copies on layaway someplace didn't you?

I found it a pretty crappy game to be honest. It think it's sold well because there is little else on the landscape for the 360 right now worth having.

I found Gears 2, audio-visually impressive, fun...but in the end not that memorable. I would compare it to a good popcorn flick.

But that's just me.

@Fenix - I think Gears would be great for a LAN party with friendsd, but playing online, I just don't have that much fun. There's too much focus on somersaulting/shotgunning/and melee.
I want it to play more like the campaign, one person uses the Lancer for cover fire while your buddy flanks and goes in for the kill. It seems that in MP the Lancer is just not used outside of chainsaw kills. It's still a great game though, don't get me wrong.

stew- so by your accounts then the ps3 had even fewer choices of games...
left 4 dead, the last remnant, gears 2, fable 2, banjoo, come to mind as 360 exclusive games in that period

Strictly personally opinion. Personally I would take Halo 3 over ANY game on the market including Gears. But then again that is my opinion. The Live activity seems to indicate that there is plenty of people that agree with me.

because the shotgun is SEVERELY gimped in gears2 (thank God) and as long as you hit your target at all, they're not somersaulting anywhere.

Ah, the nverending HALO vs GOW comparisons.

Funny, playing campaign last night (havnt finished it yet so NO DAM SPOILER responses), I was surprised how many parts of GOW2 reminded me of Halo CE. I think it's great actually. It worked in Halo and it works in GOW2, so I guess imitation (or "inspiration" for those sensitive GOW fanboys) IS the best form of flattery.

@arrrgh - I've heard people say the shotgun is gimped in Gears 2, but from my own personal experience it is still the default weapon of choice online. And yes, people still seem to somersault everywhere.

To Cryo: It is funny what people buy. Halo 3 was not great, but for some reason everyone rallied behind it as the one single killer app. I still can't understand that. Same with Gears 2. It's fun, certainly worthy of 1m sales, but I don't think as worthy of what it's gotten. For me it was a great rental... I'd rather move on to something else after a week. As for what I buy, I usually want to own the more unique games, like Mirror's Edge for example. You won't see a mirrors edge clone, but I can guarantee there will be a ton of Gears clones. And in a years time there will be something that pushes meathead shooters to a point that surpasses Gears 2's quality.

Still, I'm happy for Epic. They're a company that I have a lot of love for. Now if people would just buy 3m copies of LBP too, I'll feel like the world is in a good place.

The question is, where will it level off? Will it surpass the original?

Pretty sure the Holiday is going to keep those sales coming making it pass 4 mill by months end. After that it will ride a nice wave of steady sales eventually surpassing Gears 1.

Remember kids, Gears 2 DLC (2008 VGA's on SPIKE) is round the corner!

Would be impressive given the different states in the economy. I suppose the install base difference kinda equalizes that a bit.

Another question is if 3 million people play this game, why can't I connect to any of them?

I just want to point this out to every 360 nut that things PS3 always gets owned by 360. MGS4 (wow a ps3 exclusive) sold 4.3 million copies...even though Gears 2 sold 3 million so far...I just want to point out this comparison, as to show PS3 has attack power too. Go gears 2...but honestly...PS3 haters...give it a rest. Damn.

They have to feel secure, knowing their console is liekly to break at any momment, than that future games like Star Ocean come on 3xDVD's, or that their 5.1 sound is good enough, and than standard colour HDMI 1.2 is good enough, or that Arcade models without harddrives are not compromising their "Elite".

In less a month, over 3 million copies have been sold. MGS4 may be a big PS3 seller, but Gears 2 is going to curb stomp it.

Final Fantasy VII came on three discs, and that wasn't a problem, was it? I'll take the three discs, which takes no more than a few seconds to swap, rather than the 5-10 minute mandatory installs that the PS3 version would have..

Speaking of which, the 360 now allows us to install games, assuming you own an HDD. So how are the HDD harming the "elite" users?

Gears 2 isn't perfect, but there isn't a game out this year that is. But there's tons to love in Gears 2, and more importantly, all of it is fun.
