Joystiq hands-on: Ghostbusters (PS3/360/Wii)

We had no doubt going into our first hands-on with Ghostbusters: The Video Game that developers Terminal Reality (PS3/PC/360) and Red Fly (Wii) are delivering pure, off-the-chart fan service. We were concerned with one thing: Is this game going to be any fun to play?
Terminal Reality is well aware that thousands of gamers have never seen the original movie or its (shudder) sequel, so the prospect of tromping around with a pack of middle-aged men in goofy getups might not be a major selling point. Funny jokes, ghosts, wild weapons, and blowing up everything you can see? That's compelling for anyone.

From the admittedly small slice of the "next-gen" build of the game we got our hands on, we have to say that the fan service has been matched with what feels like a strong third-person action game with some fun ideas. There are still moments when it feels a tad by-the-books, but in its stand-out moments, it really ... stands out.
The fan service has been matched with what feels like a strong third-person action game |
The destruction these things cause as their proton beams hit everything in the environment boggles the mind. (It also costs the city in repair bills, so it's best to keep the wanton blasting to a minimum.) But as neat as it is, we could definitely see this weapon getting boring over the course of several hours (the dev pointed out that they were used for less than five minutes on-screen in the first film). Fortunately (or unfortunately) we were a new recruit to the GB team – a special weapons handler deigned expendable enough to test out the latest Proton Pack upgrades.
Slime-throwing, freeze-blasts, zero point energy bursts? Our pack was ... packed. Unfortunately, the library level's length only allowed for brief uses of these new weapons, and we're still unsure how/if they'll add to the game. The basic proton accelerator was our weapon du jour, and we used it to both blow away objects brought to life by spirits and capture the ghouls themselves.
The degree of destruction caused by the proton packs boggles the mind. |
Ghosts are captured in a similar way. They're weakened, then captured in the beam, then a trap is deployed and – with or without the aid of the A.I. Ghostbusters, although it's easier with them – you slam them around 'til they stop being frisky, position them right over the trap, and they're toast.
Our demo ended with a battle against the iconic librarian apparition from the first film, who ... wasn't happy about us taking a certain book. This mini-boss threw up a few obstacles to her eventual capture, but was actually pretty simple to nab. Doing so gave us a brief peek into the ghost realm, before we were escorted to the Wii build.
At this point, our pick for the best-playing version goes to the Wii, hands down. |
Using the Wii Remote to control the proton stream was far and away the most exciting aspect of the Wii version. It was precise and simply felt right. So did deploying a ghost trap by swinging the Nunchuk in a bowling motion. The PS3 version uses motion controls as well (they're optional) for capturing ghosts, but they were nowhere near as satisfying.

We came away from our demo with some conclusions, questions, and concerns.
At this point, our pick for the best-playing version goes to the Wii, hands-down. The PS3/360 build obviously looked far better, but capturing ghosts felt too hit-or-miss, to the point of being somewhat frustrating. Will this be tuned? Probably. Will our biggest concerns – whether the new weapons will be put to good use, and will the levels / combat be more varied than what we saw – be addressed?
Luckily, both teams have a good deal of time before the June 2009 ship date to tighten things up. The fan service is rock-solid, but the gameplay has yet to fully materialize.

It seems to me while everyone was waxing poetic about their lightsaber game fantasies, nobody looked at the Wiimote and thought "hey, you know what else would kick ass with this? Ghostbusters."
And i quite liked the sequel, thank you very much.
silverwolf761 @ Dec 9th 2008 9:22AM
Agreed. Ghostbusters II wasn't THAT bad. It was pretty good actually
NaeemTHM @ Dec 9th 2008 9:33AM
I think Nelson meant in comparison to the first film, Ghostbusters 2 was like Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo.
Poisoned Al @ Dec 9th 2008 9:37AM
It's relative. GBII wasn't too painful to watch, but was a REAL let down after the first movie, which was made of pure, liquid awesome.
samfish @ Dec 9th 2008 9:39AM
I did. I think I might be the only person on Earth who thought of a Ghostbusters game before a lightsaber game, to be honest.
...but then, I love Ghostbusters something fierce. Even if these games are awful, at least they've gotten Bill Murray saying he'd like to do a third Ghostbusters film now.
...now if only we could get a Gremlins 3, we'd be all set!
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Dec 9th 2008 9:49AM
BUT DON'T YOU KNOW MR. KHAN, IF A SEQUAL DOESN'T LIVE UP TO THE FIRST MOVIE, NO MATTER THE QUALITY, IT IS A HORRIBLE PIECE OF FILM THAT SHOULD BE BURNED.
I LEARNT THAT FROM THE INTERNETS.
Snap Count @ Dec 9th 2008 9:52AM
samfish thanks for bringing up Gremlins. I haven't had Gremlin nightmares in years....now I have to go get rid of all my daughters stuffed animals...
Matt @ Dec 9th 2008 11:11AM
I thought the second film was just as good as the first. How can you hate on the Statue of Liberty walking through New York City to Jackie Wilson's "higher and higher"?
343 Guilty Fart @ Dec 9th 2008 2:13PM
Too hot to handle, too cold to hold
They're called the Ghostbusters and they're in control
Had 'em throwin' a party for a bunch of children
While all the while the slime was under the building
So they packed up their group, got a grip, came equipped
Grabbed their proton packs off their back and they split
Found about Vigo, the master of evil
Try to battle my boys? That's not legal
antsmarching @ Dec 9th 2008 4:00PM
I ain't 'fraid of no ghosts. Gremlins, however...
t_m @ Dec 9th 2008 10:09PM
it actually WAS painful to watch...
dan @ Dec 9th 2008 9:26AM
This game sounds like it has serious potential. Let's hope the fan service doesn't overtake the gameplay quality.
M @ Dec 9th 2008 9:33AM
If we're lucky they're going to be one in the same.
Erluti @ Dec 9th 2008 9:27AM
I'm not going to lie, the fan service is enough for the $60 cost of entry.
Farseer (GDI) @ Dec 9th 2008 9:36AM
It's about time a dev. took a different approach to designing a multiplat on the Wii. Yes, you get the unique controller, but your processing and graphics options are severely limited. Why try to come as close as possible to the PS360 versions? The game will only suffer.
Pulling back on the realism by using a more cartoon-like feel to the Wii version is a great way to overcome the hardware limitations, and hit the primary user demographic at the same time. Now we just have to wait and see how it pans out.
DBuck_Eye @ Dec 9th 2008 3:26PM
I agree with what you're saying, but I would also like to give props to Ubisoft Montreal for already doing something like this with Road Trip. I feel they deserve the credit.
Farseer (GDI) @ Dec 9th 2008 3:41PM
Good to know - I like Ubisoft, and I'm glad to hear that they took this approach. The oversight was not intentional - I'm just not a sports gamer, so it slipped right past me. :)
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Dec 9th 2008 9:47AM
Sounds fucking awesome and looks like those with only a Wii won't get shafted when this game comes out. And as I've said before it was a smart move for the developers to base the Wii game graphics on the cartoon rather than just have downgraded graphics of the ps3/360 version.
j.howlett @ Dec 9th 2008 9:50AM
so i have to get two versions, ps3 and wii
Luke @ Dec 9th 2008 2:05PM
360 and Wii
blindfromthesun @ Dec 9th 2008 2:17PM
The preview made me want to get the Wii version first...now I only have to decide over the 360 and PS3 versions :-( I like when multiplatform games achieve parity though it makes it darn hard to choose which one to get.
J.Goodwin @ Dec 9th 2008 9:54AM
Thousands? Perhaps you meant tens of gamers have never seen these movies.
WiNG LifeInAGame.com @ Dec 9th 2008 10:39AM
I think you meant tens of LAMERS have not seen this movie.
Chris Are @ Dec 9th 2008 9:59AM
What's with all the... dot dot dot(s)?
I'm really surprised to hear the Wii version was more enticing. I really thought they would just add the Wii pointer and waggle.
I like the slightly cartoony movement, yet realistic representation on the PS3- not a huge fan of "the real ghostbusters" animation on the Wii. Still, I might have to go w/ the Wii on this one.
t_m @ Dec 9th 2008 10:15PM
You mean an Ellipsis?

…
Ghaleon @ Dec 9th 2008 10:08AM
Thanks for the preview. Might be hard to pick which version to get.
GBII didn't deserve that kind of diss :P
Eternal @ Dec 9th 2008 10:10AM
Crap i have all three systems now i have to sit and decide which system will i buy this game for? Xbox/PS3 (for online play) or Wii for the fun factor?
samfish @ Dec 9th 2008 10:44AM
There's no point in playing a game, online or not, if it isn't fun is the way I figure it.
Eternal @ Dec 9th 2008 11:55AM
Well that's a good way to put it but i wonder if there will even be a multi-player version included with the game. I haven't turned on my Wii for a few months already im hooked on Left4Dead and i have Been ignoring my PS3 although i have resistance 2 and Call of Duty WAW.
il_duce620 @ Dec 9th 2008 10:10AM
Ghostbusters Wii = $50
Ghostbusters PS3/360 = $60
Yeah...definitely going with the Wii version...
Mayne @ Dec 9th 2008 10:18AM
This isn't so much a complaint or concern as it is wishful thinking, but I still think it would have been fun if the Wii version's characters designs were based off of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon, with Egon inexplicably having that goofy swirl of blond hair complete with an equally inexplicable rat-tail. Obviously, it would probably do more to alienate newcomers to the franchise, so I can see why they're going more for caricature than nostalgia (design-wise).
But it is good to hear that the gameplay itself is shaping up to be worth the wait. I've been waiting for a new Ghostbusters game since the I first played the 8-bit adaptations all those years ago.
Oddly enough, some friends of mine were talking about how awesome a Ghostbusters game would be on the Wii a little over a year ago; a few days later I stumbled upon the then-months-old news of the Zootfly GB game prototype. And it was right around that time Columbia/Sony was actively making known their intentions to go forth with what we're seeing now...
I hope the devs DO take the next several months to truly polish up the gameplay and make it all worth the wait...! Sounds like the presentation's all there; we just need them to deliver on the gameplay end.
elko84@me.com @ Dec 9th 2008 10:36AM
If you havent seen Ghostbusters do yourself a favor and go watch it, right now. I am a HUGE Ghostbusters fan. I loved both the movies! I loved the cartoon. I will love this game. I'm only 24 but I've been waiting for a real ghostbusters game like this forever! This game could totally suck and I will still buy it and love it to death. In fact I will prolly buy both the 360 and Wii versions.
WiNG LifeInAGame.com @ Dec 9th 2008 10:36AM
Randy, you forgot to tell him about the Twinkie.

Cellien @ Dec 9th 2008 11:01AM
Probably get the Wii version for the office and the PS3 or 360 version for home (depending on what kind of multi it has). Does the game have co-op??

The third cornerstone movie of my childhood! Back to the Future made me want a DeLorean. Gremlins made me NOT want a small critter. Ghostbusters made me want a Proton Pack.
