MotorStorm: Pacific Rift sells 1M, tackles bumpy charts

Who knew a racing game would sell? Sony did; that's why it made MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, which, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz, has sold one million copies worldwide since it, well, stormed onto shelves in the US on October 28 and subsequently jumped across the pond on November 7.
The PS3 launch game's sequel has hit some bumps on UK sales charts, debuting in 29th place and slipping to 35th for the second week of November. Still, GI.biz says that developer Evolution Studios remains undeterred in its plans to introduce downloadable content for the game, in the form of new courses and cars/motorcycles/trucks/ATVs/scooters. (Okay, we made that last one up. Just keeping you sharp.)

Motorstorm is da bomb. I like getting dirty IN ALL 4 ELEMENTS! OH MAN! THATS HAWTNESS.
sk8monroe81 @ Dec 9th 2008 7:13PM
who would have thought that the motorstorm franchise would be the # 1 selling game franchise on the ps3 console..
i cant believe more people bought this game than LBP & resistance 2 though.
i guess sony knows that racing games are the # 1 selling games on sony consoles.
ive personally always hated car racing games.
Aaron F @ Dec 9th 2008 7:25PM
I just read something recently that racing is one of the top genres for games, handily beating shooters.
Hyams @ Dec 9th 2008 8:15PM
These figures are probably sold to retailer, not sold to customer.
LBP has just about cracked 1 million sold to customer, so quite likely LBP has indeed outsold Motorstorm 2.

I wasn't a fan of the first one... too slowly paced. I'll pick this one up once the price goes down and I see what DLC they have on offer.
Joe @ Dec 9th 2008 7:19PM
This is good to hear. I truly believe this was one of the most underrated titles on the PS3 this year. It has the most impressive visuals I've seen all year, and its by far the best racing game to release in 2008. I cant wait for some DLC.
umm....hello??? @ Dec 9th 2008 7:34PM
how about fixing that split screen multiplayer problem? until they offer it, this game is a pass for me. also the downside of the Burnout: Paradise game too....
j.howlett @ Dec 9th 2008 7:41PM
i thought the game had split screen when i played the demo
Jtenma @ Dec 9th 2008 7:50PM
um...hello, it DOES!
umm....hello??? @ Dec 10th 2008 9:11AM
oh. then why the hell don't I have this game yet? *adds it to christmas list*
the original didn't have local splitscreen. = (

All Hail Motorstorm.
Great games.
Marky @ Dec 9th 2008 8:26PM
Read the source maerial carefully. He was referring to Motorstorm 1, not Motorstorm 2. Look at vgchartz and see how Motorstorm 2 is currently selling. It's hardly 1 Million.
Hyams @ Dec 9th 2008 8:39PM
Motorstorm 1 has sold over 3 million by this point, so I'm pretty sure he's talking about Motorstorm 2...
Kodros @ Dec 9th 2008 9:21PM
"In terms of the other titles it was also important to focus on – the sequel to MotorStorm, we're pleased with the high Metacritic rating of 82 per cent and it's sold over a million units worldwide."
How is he referring to MotorStorm 1?
Bass Masterson @ Dec 9th 2008 8:46PM
Really? Wow. I liked Motorstorm but I borrowed this and was really bored. Glad to see it's doing well though.
Billy @ Dec 9th 2008 9:12PM
I was really excited for this game, until I played the Pure demo. Pure is ATV only, but I just found it a much more satisfying experience all around, and the graphics are quite a bit better too. I may still get the new motorstorm eventually, but I dunno.
aldim000 @ Dec 9th 2008 10:59PM
This report is very strange, considering the abysmal launches of the game in the US (lower than top 20 in Oct NPD, which covered its first week) and UK. Unless it sold like mad in smaller European markets, which is highly unlikely, this is probably a misleading sold to retail number.
JoeTheBlow @ Dec 10th 2008 6:51AM
The Wii has rendered the NPD and all charts useless.
Remove those games, bought by the mindless masses, and everything would look much "healthier".
This story just proves how time-wasting it is nowadays to even look at the charts.
AlDim @ Dec 11th 2008 12:24AM
Uh... no. There are a couple of Wii games that consistently end up in the top 10, but they don't skew the list much and Motorstorm didn't even make it into the top top 20 in the US and UK. Claiming sales of 1 million is more than fishy, since it means the game must have increased its sales drastically after its first week, which pretty much never happens. Not to mention that LBP, released at about the same time as Motorstorm, DID end up in the top 10 lists, but Sony still haven't announced it as a million seller. Same goes about Resistance 2.
