Square Enix held a Dragon Quest-related press conference today, the news of which was completely dominated by some offhand remarks by Yuji Horii about something or other. But the other big news, for which there was an official, planned announcement, was the release date for Dragon Quest IX: Protectors of the Starry Sky. Japanese gamers can expect to stand in line on March 28, and hand over a staggering 5,980 yen ($65) to get their copies.
Dragon Quest IX demos were set up at the unit, using DSi systems outfitted with totally sweet Slime-themed Hori Protect Cases. The Slime speaker stands, after the break, are equally wonderful! When can we get some announcements about those?

I'm curious as to if there going to bring that price over here. People already complain about the $40 price tag for SE games (especially the uber old remakes/ports).Adding $25 more would be insane!

That price is a little scary but this news is still so exciting. I've waited for news on this game for too long.
Did Dragon Quest VIII even retail for that much though?

Yes. Dragon Quest IX will be 65$ in North America, despite the fact that Dragon Quest isn't very popular.

Look at that Slime speaker! I wonder if that's going to be out at retail.
I don't mind the price. I'm used to that from buying PS3/360 games. I'll just not buy Resident Evil 5 that month.

Anyways, like Rikki said, it'll probably just be $39.99 in the States, like most other SQEX games. Definitely going to import, though. I'm impatient.

Anyone who buys a DS game for US 65$ is not only a bad person, but they are also allowing the company to charge that much in the future, and subsequently, to completely ruin gaming for everyone who doesn't have their mom and dad buy everything for them.

Uh...5000 - 6000 JPY is relatively normal for JP retail. DQ IX is slightly more expensive than VP DS or the DQ remakes, but it's the same price as TWEWY.
And when it comes over here, it'll be the standard DS price + $10 SQEX tax.

i highly doubt that we will see such a high price tag on that game here in the states. in japan, dragon quest is an extremely hot property. ive heard tell of schools shutting down and people calling in sick for work when a new dragon quest game is released over there. in contrast, people in the states do not respond as vigorously to such a release, therefore i think they would keep the price of the game on the level with everything else in order to maximize profits.
