Even before the release of
Dragon Quest IX, Square Enix is already talking about its inevitable future. Yuji Horii, the series creator, revealed at a recent press conference that the upcoming
Dragon Quest X will appear on Wii. This will be the first official entry of the ultra-popular RPG series (at least in Japan) on a current-generation console. (
Dragon Quest VIII for PS2, pictured.) Other than that remark, no other details were revealed.
Square Enix also revealed the Japanese release date for the upcoming
Dragon Quest IX. The Nintendo DS RPG will be in stores on March 28th for 5980 yen. That means the hardcore Japanese fans out there will only have to wait in line for 108 more days. Good luck guys.

I honestly never found the Dragon Quest series to be particularly appealing. Story and gameplay always came off as overly simplistic and boring.
Meh, to each his own.
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Dec 10th 2008 2:06AM
The gameplay is archaic but to a lot of gamers that's the appeal - what with Square trying to mix shit up constantly (and, IMO, failing miserably each time... did not enjoy Crisis Core at all, for example), it's nice to play a game that feels classic and sticks to a tried-and-true formula.
Later DQs have better stories btw.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread - XBL: SoCoolCurt) @ Dec 10th 2008 3:45AM
well then Fatass of Kickassness, i think i may have to give Dragon Quest a go. i have been so pissed with Square Enix lately since you never quite know what your going to get. i loved FF7 but absolutely despised Crisis Core. i was always like "why is this stupid slot machine taking the game away from me every 2 minutes?! let ME fight for crying out loud"
tmacairjordan87 @ Dec 10th 2008 9:05AM
I agree Joeshie. Just bought DQ 8 for ps2 cause I kept hearing all the praise from gamers, and it reminded me to never listen to anyone but myself. It's easily one of the most boring games I've ever played.
RPGJock @ Dec 10th 2008 11:03AM
Nope, Oblivion has that beat by far. Give me a rich full story with wonderful voice acting and a beautiful anime art style vs that drab looking, poorly voiced acted, convoluted yet boring storyline anyday. Don't even get me started on the horrible combat system...
TwEE @ Dec 10th 2008 1:53AM
So we should probably expect to see more and more big announcements like this for the Wii from now on.
And wasn't there a rumour that DQ 9 was coming out for the Wii as well as the DS?
BPMOmega [gamertag] @ Dec 10th 2008 1:24PM
I'm gonna guess that the source of that rumor heard that "Dragon Quest" was coming to Wii, and assumed it meant IX, but it was actually X.
WRE @ Dec 10th 2008 2:00AM
Chalk up another coup for Nintendo...
Mr Khan @ Dec 10th 2008 8:11AM
That's the thing, though. It's not really Nintendo's coup, in that they probably didn't aggressively pursue this
The popularity of the console stands on its own
guek @ Dec 10th 2008 2:03AM
nintendo's got japan by the balls
Wiinterfang @ Dec 10th 2008 2:10AM
Yeah wii fans deserve something while I haven't play any of the dragon quest games nor do I own a wii I guess then SEGA needs to step up and make one of those delicious Phantasy Star games for the wagglecube.
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Dec 10th 2008 2:11AM
Yeah, they do. There is one that looks pretty interesting coming to the DS, though.
Wiinterfang @ Dec 10th 2008 2:15AM
The one for the DS is a technical wonder I don't know what the hell SEGA did but Squarenix better step up :P.
I mean Single,Multiplayer and online mode, clever use of the touch screen, full 3D worlds, beautiful attention to detail ( you can see rain and butterflies and shit), full animated cut-scenes, bunch of characters and all of them are customizable..what..what..WHAT KIND OF SORCERY IS THIS!!!!!!
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Dec 10th 2008 2:19AM
It's called effort. Square doesn't need to put any forth on DS games because of the sheer amount of fangirls that'll eat up the seventh re-release of Final Fantasy 4, but for PSZ to sell anywhere but in Japan, Sega will have to pull off something very impressive. And so far, that's what they've done.
Wiinterfang @ Dec 10th 2008 2:26AM
I hope so Crisis Core was terrible =(.
mazza_man @ Dec 10th 2008 7:52AM
I don't think it's fair to say they don't put effort in...FF4 is gorgeous and has amazing quality voide acting in the cut scenes!
Anyways, they're different types of game. PS has turned into a more MMO type where has FF4 is a straight RPG, so multiplayer etc aint really necessary.
wise_old_bird @ Dec 10th 2008 2:22AM
Ah, guess this series won't be moving forward, but that's just what the Japanese want anyways. I think it would have made more sense to put DQ10 on DS as well, but I wish MS and/or Sony could have put more effort into a 'current gen' DQ push.
I think the stuck in the past attitude of the Wii works well enough for the DQ series, and any 'moving on' would have only hurt the appeal inside Japan. I guess the Japanese market is destined to only shrink to non-importance.
TwEE @ Dec 10th 2008 2:29AM
...or the opposite of what you said.
Roto13 @ Dec 10th 2008 2:31AM
Do you really think the reason Dragon Quest VIII played like a pretty NES game was because of technical limitations? The series doesn't need to be on the PS360 to move forward.
Also, the Wii doesn't have a "stuck in the past" attitude unless you can name a past gen console with a Wiimote.
wise_old_bird @ Dec 10th 2008 2:33AM
More likely just what I said. Japanese marketshare & game sales are down year after year. Now Japan is about 30% of the entire videogames market, both the USA & Europe have a larger chunk. This refusal to make advancements, other than forward thinking companies like Capcom is just helping to enforce this rule. Each time Japan refused to step up, the chances of them ever stepping up in the future decreases.
In Japan, I think DQ10 is smart enough on Wii, smarter to put it on DS, but maybe the development cycle will be so long even DSi will be obsolete by then, who knows.
But it's still very disappointing, but I think expecting anything different about the MOST TRADITIONAL JRPG is expecting too much.
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Dec 10th 2008 2:34AM
There are plenty of RPGs that have 'moved forward'. Go play those if you don't like the DQ formula - there's a reason DQ is made the way it is, and that's because some of us still enjoy the admittedly archaic battle system. That's not to say we don't like it when games offer new and improved ways to play, but it's nice to have something that harkens back to the RPG days of old.
Also, I can't see Square making any drastic changes to the formula, and changes that they would make? I don't see them not being possible on the Wii, so the only way I can make sense of your whole 'moving forward' argument is that you think 'moving forward' is a graphical thing. I'm probably off, but still.
wise_old_bird @ Dec 10th 2008 2:37AM
Obviously the reason DQ8 played like a pretty NES game is because it hasn't moved forward, and that's just the point. Somehow I fantasized them taking a bold step forward, but I guess it's business as usual.
Wii is completely stuck in the past. Wiimote control has been proven to gamers by this point to be basically a big gimmick. Even Nintendo's biggest 1st party Wii games are / would be better played without the Wiimote. The problem is design, online support, hardware, basically every aspect of the Wii is out of date. I'd say Wii itself is more forward thinking than the Dragon Quest series though.

Riiiiiiiiiiight. Been proven. Ok. You clearly like to talk a lot and hear yourself, so maybe you shouldn't go so overboard making it so obvious that you're not the type of person that's worth actually discussing anything with.

As opposed to someone who doesn't even discuss the subject at hand and proclaims the discussion over without even making any point at all? Right.
Phil @ Dec 10th 2008 3:38AM
...dude, go play some other series.
Leave the classics classic, some of us like it that way. Sorry it doesn't appeal to you but SE has many more offerings for you. The Last Remnant, Star Ocean 4, Infinite Undiscovery, FFXIII, need I go on?
Hell, if that gameplay is too boring, go play TWEWY.
Some stuff just doesn't need change. Look at the Rachet and Clank series, how much of THAT has changed?
The Enix half holds what I hold dear. And if you wanna see how bad the Dragon Quest series used to be in generic turn based RPG-ism, go play DQIV. I didn't hate it, but I couldn't find it as enjoyable as VIII. Likeable for story and how it changed up things with characters... But the gameplay was too limiting per character.
The most recent installment in the numbered series brought a much appreciated feel of freedom and the scale was amazing.
And as for the wiimote comment, so it's a gimmick, who cares? I like how the controller feels in my hands in general and I've never gotten say, pains from excessive play like with a PS2 or 360 controller. =/
Your reasons are that of an extremely shallow and jaded gamer, much like myself... But more pessimistic. I try to look on the bright side and in this case, I welcome the plan to not push forward the appearance. Keep the style it has and I, LOVED the style for both VIII and Swords.
DBuck_Eye @ Dec 10th 2008 6:51AM
Wait, putting it on the Wii isn't moving forward, but putting it on the 4 year old portable N64 is?

yeah, whilest playing through MP3 I couldnt help but think "being able to move the cursor from 1 end of the screen to the other in less than a second is cool, but it'd be even cooler if it took at least 2 seconds just to get back to eye level, let alone the top." Then I got Mario Galaxy, and again the thought occured "The whole 'throw stars at enemies to stun them' is neat, but it would be a lot better with awkward analog controls instead of pointer.' Then I got Twilight Princess, and the only thing I could think of is 'you know what? Theres only 1 thing I like more than waggling around like an idiot, and thats mashing the A button until my finger bleeds!"
yep, they were A LOT worse on Wii

soviet chick @ Dec 10th 2008 3:22AM
So much for Blue Dragon style character realizations on PS3/360. I'll take a minor graphical leap (not that DQ VIII wasn't gorgeous!) as long as they leave out the lame British-English Voice Overs in the western releases and overly dramatic live orchestral score (yeah, the score was good, but in the context of the game it sucked out all the charm).
Looking forward to hearing more about this one, DQ has always been one of my favorite series, glad it will still be coming out for a home console.
Lee @ Dec 10th 2008 10:00AM
I'd rather here a British accent than the US typical mix of Californy or Texas accents. Star Ocean, whilst great is also grating my ears to pieces. And some other RPG I played even used US slang!
"I could care less" Fuck off with your broken language! Say that on a forum but not in an actual game.

aj @ Dec 10th 2008 7:37AM
Dude, just go get a copy of Final Fantasy VII. It'll work on the PS2, PS3, and the PSP if you have CFW. Who needs a re-make?
Marrvia @ Dec 10th 2008 5:18PM
Seriously. If they are going to remake a Final Fantasy, it should be FF6. I'm annoyed with all the FF7 remake demand. Don't get me wrong, I would buy it, but FF7 is not THAT dated. Even in today's standard, it is still better than most games coming out. FF6 would be way better, or Chrono Trigger. Even though those games are still great, they would benefit a hell of a lot from a graphical overhaul than FF7.
But I would rather have no remake at all, and how about they concentrate on a NEW game instead? A full blown remake would delay the next FF game by at least 3 years. Plus a FF7 remake would probably suck because they would probably try to revamp the battle system to make it real-time and they would have to redo all of the music, and I guarantee it will not be as good. It's a bad idea.
Otimus @ Dec 10th 2008 4:44AM
DQ's Archaic gameplay is not the problem with that series.
it's the overly shallow story, overly shallow characters, and overly shallow everything that's the problem.
There's bad saturday morning cartoons made to advertise toys with far more depth than any DQ.
