Upcoming Home content shown at London media day
"Home will live or die on the strength of its content." It was good to hear these words coming from Daniel Hill, Sony Europe's Director of Home, at a media day event in London. While Home's initial vision seemed ambitious and groundbreaking, what we've seen so far in the closed beta has been comparatively underwhelming. What was shown at the event, however, was some upcoming first- and third-party content that showed significant progress and potential.
Seeing as the media day event was hosted by SCEE, there could be some info regarding Home spaces that only correlates to the European experience. The majority of info should, however, be universal for all regions.
The MotorStorm apartment, a premium customizable living space, is very different from the Harbor Studio and the Summer House that closed beta users have already seen. Based around the MotorStorm franchise, it's set on a cliff shelf, overlooking the MotorStorm festival, complete with an animated race taking place below. The Home developers we spoke to hadn't yet decided how it would be distributed, but suggested it might be a contest prize or
Speaking of events, we were shown the Events space, which has been around for a while now, re-skinned for one of three upcoming events, which Sony promised us will be "coming shortly." The demonstration was a PSP-3000 treasure hunt, which asks Home users (Homers?) to find eight hidden numbers, strategically placed around the Events space. These numbers are plugged into an in-Home website and enter you into a drawing for a real PSP-3000 (pro tip: look closely at the Loco Roco fountain). Everyone who takes part will get a free in-Home PSP-3000 cap (pictured below).
Two other events were mentioned, including a "design your own T-shirt" event, with the winner's design being made available for sale in the Home shopping center. There will also be a "MotorStorm VIP" event, with some sort of developer interaction. These events look like great fun and, if they happen regularly, could be reason enough to come back into Home every so often.
Red Bull has recently been revealed as the first third-party partner to have its own Home environment. This Red Bull Air Race space was available to play with and includes a 3D plane-flying minigame. Players race through a set of rings in the fastest time possible. Times will then be placed on a universal Home leaderboard, allowing you to see how you rank against friends. Seeing full 3D minigames like this inside Home makes the service's potential a lot more exciting than we previously thought.
While all of the above content was shown live, there were also some pieces of concept art on show. These were for upcoming first-party game spaces, such as the Buzz! space which includes a multiplayer minigame called the "Buzz! Runaround." The concept art showed a top-down view of the environment, which looks like a Buzz! controller. Questions are pumped through from MyBuzz! and players must stand on the correct colored button to rack up points. Everyone in the room can play the game simultaneously, which means up to 32 people can be running around this virtual Buzz! controller. There will also be a leaderboard, much like the Red Bull Air Race game.
Concept art for the MotorStorm space, complete with "MotorKartStorm" minigame and merchandise counter where you can buy such things as MotorStorm branded ripped festival jeans, were also shown. Finally, the Resistance 2 space concept art was revealed. The developers will be playing on the "Twisted History" aspect of the franchise by transforming the Home central plaza into a Chimeran-infested invasion site. There was also talk of a team-based minigame requiring people to fight back a horde of Chimera, though that wasn't shown in the concept artwork.
That's it as far as content that was shown, but we were promised that there's more waiting in the wings from third parties; content that couldn't be talked about thanks to contracts being in various stages of completion. Partners that were confirmed include Sega, Activision, Midway, Atari, Eidos, Ubisoft, EA Sports, Diesel, and Audi.
A lot of interesting tidbits were also revealed. The Trophy room, long assumed dead, has been placed on hold. Daniel Hill did assure us that 3D Trophies would happen in the future. Speaking of Trophies, it has been confirmed that Home will be able to read what Trophies you have and unlock content appropriately. Not only that, but Home will also be able to dish out its own Trophies, though there is no indication of how those will work.
It's possible for future games to have this functionality built in, so that when you acquire a Trophy a message will pop up telling you what you've unlocked in Home. There's also the potential for in-game menus, taking you straight to a game's Home space. It seems that integrating the entire PS3 platform in this way is a large aspect of Home.
There are hopes to develop further PlayStation Store integration, such as being able to download a game's demo or downloadable content simply by approaching an in-Home advertisement. Cross-game invites are possible by pulling people through Home, thanks to the party system, though it won't be available immediately.
Other updates, like bigger clubs, cross-Home game launching and extended profiles, are already planned. This interesting content should start to drop immediately, with more coming fairly regularly. If that happens, Home could definitely be a worthwhile addition to the PS3's feature list.

Barely.
(barely better than "first!" that is, not barely a console.)

Suddenly excited for this.
VERY excited! See you guys in the Joystiq clubhouse!
JoeTheBlow @ Dec 10th 2008 6:11AM
I'm starting to see now why Sony have invested so much time in this.
You give the app away free, get the people in, and like TV ratings the advertisers see lots of potential eyes to catch their ads.
Combine that with people buying games to unlock trophies, to unlock cool in-home stuff (i'll take a chimera skin please) and its a boost to the sagging software sales too.
BIG potential here, if they play it right.
GenBanks @ Dec 10th 2008 9:28AM
When you put it that way, it does sound pretty appealing... and I'm someone who doesn't use his PS3 for games much at all.
baby sea tuna @ Dec 10th 2008 9:42AM
I'm not either, but if I were to turn it on for something other than movie watching/playing PS2 games, it'd be actually play a PS3 game, not this.
Maverick Saturn @ Dec 10th 2008 10:20AM
But then Baby Sea, it wouldn't be aimed at you if you already have no interest, but instead aimed at gamers like me who are in fact curious.
Killjebus @ Dec 10th 2008 10:48AM
It is now clear as to why Sony delayed the launch of the open Beta for so long. They needed the time to not only flesh out the design and implement fun things to do like the treasure hunt, but for the corporate tie-ins and partnerships to be finalized.
An underwhelming bare-bones launch would have had the nay-sayers out in droves. Now, even the most hardened anti-Sony fanboy will have to recognize the HUGE potential of this FREE service.
I can only imagine how many companies themed spaces we will have in the coming months and years, each with its own mini-games or games, prizes, contests, announcements and so on.
Now that they have said the 3D virtual trophy room WILL be there (soon I hope) that will encourage people like me who are NOT trophy whores to aquire more tropies.
What will the virtual E3 in Home look like? Maybe we will get early or exclusive access to upcoming games...who knows?
The possibilities are nearly endless.
Finally, we can ALL go Home.
Hey Joystiq, the Homer name should stick. Nice one.
Duke @ Dec 10th 2008 11:02AM
Killjebus, I stare in amazement at your posts that are always so blindly in love with anything Sony says...No matter what. It's truly amazing how you spin together recycled marketing phrases for them non-stop. I mean, "Finally, we can ALL go Home" makes me think of glassy eyed little girls writing BFF in each other's yearbooks. It's hardly something a grown man would say.
Killjebus @ Dec 10th 2008 11:09AM
Whatever Dukey ole boy....cry me a river. Are you my stalker?
The Home comment was half SARCASTIC, but I'm sorry Dukey...I will try harder to BASH Sony for trying something that has the potential to be so much more than what Live is.
Now get on yo kness and suck on my Noodly appendage HEATHEN!!!
We need a Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster Club pronto fellow Pastafarians!!!
Knight Marquise @ Dec 10th 2008 11:48AM
FFS Killjebus. Do you truly understand how utterly assinine you come off with your chearleading? Fernando was =never= that bad with Ninty.
I wish there was a way to avoid certain posters (as in completely block their posts from showing up on my screen.)
Whenever one of your posts come up I almost feel dirty....like I just watched someone perform oral sex on a faceless corporation.
borland502 (SDF Macross) @ Dec 10th 2008 12:19PM
Killjeebus - I have to back the duke on this one dude. The sad thing is that you do have a very valid point about delays due to the need for tie-ins. But you wrap it with so much doe-eyed fluff it gets lost on even PS3 fans like me.
Like the OP says, Home is starting to warm me with potential. But what's there now (yes, I know it's a beta), does not realize anything earth shattering. Given the amount of false starts for Home, I think it's not unfair to wait longer for the triumphant "I TOLD YOU!!!!" posts.
D-Pad @ Dec 10th 2008 12:54PM
@Knight Marquise.
Way to hit the fucking nail on the head.
I remember back in the day when this assclown composed a teary farewell letter, vowing never to post at Joystiq again.
I think that lasted about 2 months.
He also had about 4 or 5 usernames going at the same time.
Joystiq should do the community a dude-huge™ and drop the banhammer on this little twat once and for all.
Tiptup300 @ Dec 10th 2008 1:01PM
I'd rather Sony having spent time merging their online services with Steam or something that's already situated.
My Xbox is a haven for online interaction with friends, my PS-Triple is a box that tells me my friends may or may not have been online at some point in the last few months.
borland502 (SDF Macross) @ Dec 10th 2008 1:26PM
"I'd rather Sony having spent time merging their online services with Steam or something that's already situated."
That'd be nice with a lot of things eh? I know I long for Steam when I have to deal with EA's bullshiat. Or I have to install Impulse because Stardock doesn't realize it's an also-ran.
Taking this topic further off the tracks, I wonder if the dovetailing of Windows Live in Fallout 3 and Steam indicates a recognition of supremacy for one company.
Maverick Saturn @ Dec 10th 2008 2:25PM
Personally I think Sony should press on with Home, while it may be cumbersome and long compared to NXE, it offers a different experience, otherwise waht would be the point having all consoles if they were nearly identical. I want to be able to switch between the three of them for various reasons. With the knowledge that when fed up with being pestered on XBL I can go get pestered on Home in 3D is a great feeling others will miss out on cos they are stuck with the same dull experience no matter how much they like it. :) Thats like staying in the same country all you're life because you're 'comfortable', yawn, boring.
My only concern is the downloading of ares :(
Maverick Saturn @ Dec 10th 2008 2:30PM
Wait..downloading Ares? The greek god of war?
I meant 'areas' :D
After a while, all these areas will add up, I hope loading new areas is sorted out to.
Duke @ Dec 10th 2008 4:17PM
Well, I am sticking with my prior observation. Good for you that you have people here to support your hype over anything a company tells you, but it still is all silly BFF fluff to me.
Maverick Saturn @ Dec 10th 2008 5:20PM
Well thats why we all have our own opinions Duke, nobody is forcing you to like it, but then nobody can force anyone not to like it.

I'm sure I won't be the only one watching Home carefully to see where it will go next.
DBuck_Eye @ Dec 10th 2008 6:47AM
"Home will live or die on the strength of its content." As opposed to every other new IP?
Hashbrown Hunter @ Dec 10th 2008 6:50AM
Your point being...what exactly?
KarlW @ Dec 10th 2008 7:02AM
SCEE could always talk the talk. It's in attributing those words to meaning and ultimately action that they fail.
The Aggie CEO @ Dec 10th 2008 7:10AM
Actually Home can be updated daily......as opposed to games which have to have DLC and often time having to pay for SAID DLC........
if a certain aspect of Home isnt working they can just remove it......cant really do that with a game........
DBuck_Eye @ Dec 10th 2008 3:11PM
I just sort of found that to be an unneeded statement.
Ethan @ Dec 10th 2008 7:19AM
They could just put this content on the PSN, but where would the tightly controlled marketing environment go?
I personally can't think of less fun than hanging around branding for rewards, but with no barrier to entry I do actually think it'll be rather successful.
The Aggie CEO @ Dec 10th 2008 7:20AM
lets just hope that things dont be outrageously priced....there are weekly additions as far as spaces go as well as Apt & Clothing content.....and that it wont be SEVERELY slowed.......
ColinXL @ Dec 10th 2008 7:35AM
Great! Just what the PS3 needs! More "Potential
GiggMan @ Dec 10th 2008 8:27AM
I don't see what is so bad about it. Personally I think it is one of the best add-ons ever. Hell it's not going to cost me anything, who cares if it fails. If Sony was wasting time on this and didn't have anything else coming in the near future then I'd be upset. That doesn't seem to be the case though so bring it on flop or not.
anonymous @ Dec 10th 2008 8:44AM
I was wondering is there any chance (or word of) Sony integrating trophies as a way of accessing special areas of home. I was thinking that it would be a cool incentive both to play more of a game, and to actually use home, if trophies got you access to additional content. My thought would be something akin to: a person walks into the Far Cry 2 gamespace, and there is a special door in the back labeled VIP, and if a person has a platinum trophy they can enter into the room. This would also be could for people to go in and perhaps find other people who are just as into a particular game, and set up special online matches of only platinum trophy holders, or something of that sort.
JoeTheBlow @ Dec 10th 2008 9:35AM
Thats the plan, apparently.
The Motorstorm super-apartment will be pay for, sadly (but to be expected, from those guys), but there is no reason why other apartments can't be given as trophies.
If they were given to platinum trophy winners they would be a great reward for playing the crap out of the game, and also the time you play it is less time the thing is in the pre-owned aisle at Gamestop or wherever. So more sales, more reason to buy a game and keep it, or online players, win win for all.
Only if someone doesn't cock it all up.
jarhead906 @ Dec 10th 2008 8:52AM
Wow. This is fantastic. For some reason the concept of Home never really got my full support until reading through this article.
The mention of a treasure hunt the resulted in rare clothes items is fantastic.
And I am so happy that a Party system is GUARANTEED to come at the least instead of wondering IF.
At first, it may not be the 'best' but it still will be a great testing spot for the items that they don't have initially. That's why they are calling it 'open beta' so they can have some freedom in the initial quality or content in Home.
CANT WAIT UNTIL TOMORROW!! (OR TODAY?)
Maverick Saturn @ Dec 10th 2008 8:52AM
In terms of 'potential', Home has a world of opportunities, it just depends on how much of those opportunities will be seen and used.
Some tidbits sound great in theory, but couuld be boring when played, it all depends on the final presentation, something as large and ambitious as home doesn't take a year to make, its not likw WoW or other mmo, it requirea so many little things and details. And though it may not be everything great, with time I think it can be developed. My only concern is how something like it would be adapted for a ps4 or psp after all that work and time.
Tez @ Dec 10th 2008 9:16AM
Not too shabby.
tmacairjordan87 @ Dec 10th 2008 9:21AM
The thing I'm interested in is something that Sony hinted we would be able to do a long time. They said we'd be able to attend a virtual E3 and watch their press conference there. Pretty sure they also said they want us to be able to play demos for whatever games they have at the show.
If they could pull something like that off, then they'll convince me this isn't a huge waste of time.
Maverick Saturn @ Dec 10th 2008 10:07AM
I wouldn't be surprised, they have a choice, they could either have an official E3 complex lookalike with all the latest demos on the show floor to play and trailers to see like in real life, obviously without the Xbox and Nintendo areas or they could just show those event on all screens in Home. Which would seem rather cheap to say the least, but at least that way everyone would be invovled.
Noshino @ Dec 10th 2008 10:09AM
Then they must have convinced you long ago...

http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/05/27/sony-unveils-the-media-and-events-home-venue/
I think there was another event that also was released on Home but I can't remember it
tmacairjordan87 @ Dec 10th 2008 10:12AM
Right like I said I remember Sony (i think it was phil) talking about doing stuff like that, but this is Sony. They talk about a lot of things so let's see what they actually do. E3's in June I think so they certainly have plenty of time to plan something like that for Home.
JoeTheBlow @ Dec 10th 2008 9:37AM
The usual Xbots and Home-naysayers are pretty damn quiet since this story broke.
baby sea tuna @ Dec 10th 2008 10:45AM
It's because there's pretty much nothing left to say about it that hasn't already been said.
Duke @ Dec 10th 2008 10:55AM
Well Joe, you are talking non stop so maybe they are off covering their ears.
This is the first positive thing I have seen in a long time regarding Home, and I'm in the beta. You need to drop the "xbots" bs and realize that the beta has been leaving many unthrilled and there has been little to get excited over for those of us who don't just talk like gamers, but play the games we talk about. (I suspect you often talk without hands on experience.)
This information is very much different and is something to get excited for. Yet its far too early for you to start giving the 'I told you so' attitude and speeches.
borland502 (SDF Macross) @ Dec 10th 2008 12:34PM
I wonder if in the future, marketing talent will be determined by finding a name that can in no way be combined with a pejorative like gay or bot.
Perhaps Nintendo got it right: Adopt a name so obviously silly and loaded with suggestive meanings that people give up after awhile. I give you Microsoft's next console, the Fellatio and Sony's new PS4Some.
Home has potential; the service has a lot of potential. After the missteps even fans have a right to be skeptical. But if they carry it off then you're damn right it's something to brag about.
*psst* They haven't finished it yet.
Noshino @ Dec 10th 2008 12:37PM
Actually Duke, most of the features mentioned here have already been shown before.
For example, the events thing? Ubisoft had a replica of Ubidays 08 on Home.
The clubs were also on the beta as well as some 2D minigames
Now, there are also other features that have not been on the beta, but have been reported/shown by Sony like the 3D minigame on the Red Bull space, the trophies area, the Buzz game room, etc.
So Duke, if you don't mind, could you please tell me how "This information is very much different..."?
oolz @ Dec 10th 2008 10:09AM
I don't get how any of this changes anyones perceptions of this thing. It's always been "neat", but it's just not something many people are going to spend any meaningful time in. It's a slower and convoluted way (albeit pretty) to get information that you can get elsewhere more quickly, with lots of fluff thrown in. The fact that they've already dropped things that were key features six months ago shows that even Sony isn't quite sure what they want to do with it.
