November NPD: Wii breaks 2m, Gears 2 breaks 1.5m ... what recession?
Despite all the talk of recessions and global economic crises (crisises?), the video game industry once again seems unfazed. According to the NPD Group, North American industry sales totaled $2.91 billion for November, approximately 10% higher than the same month last year. Of that, $1.45b came from software while hardware took in $1.21b and accessories $255.4 million. As you can see below, the big winners of the month were the Wii (average to 68K sold per day!) followed by the DS (avg. 52K daily). For the fourth month in a row, the Xbox 360 has outsold the PlayStation 3, and has sold double that of Sony's console for the eighth month in the two-year battle.
On the software side of things, Gears of War 2 must be very pleased with itself, with Marcus Fenix and the gang selling 1.56 million units – that's four times as many copies as Nathan Hale's Resistance 2 – securing the top spot for November. But not so fast, Delta Squad! Factoring in both "next-gen" platforms, Call of Duty: World at War sold an incredible 2 million units, with the Xbox 360 release commanding an impressive 70% of those numbers. Check full software sales numbers after the break.

It's funny how you can make everyone laugh at this pic, but if you would ever put this on any other post you're ass would be in the oven being flamed.

Dude, stop spamming the gaming blogs with that stuff. It's not all that witty.
Cody @ Dec 11th 2008 9:09PM
Yet somehow the PS2 is still selling (and only 172k behind the PS3), Wii is in the top spot (like all along), and the only console selling less than the PS3 is the PS2 (an 8 year old console!). Fad or no fad...success is still success.

Only in November can 1.57m get you in second place :P
jonaswan1 @ Dec 11th 2008 9:08PM
You forget about the month of Dec. The NPD Group expects sales of games related stuff to be in the $3 billion next month.

As the following figures show, Microsoft is in last place:
Nintendo 3.61m
PlayStation 1.05m
Microsoft 836k

fools, the entertainment industry is usually not affected by economic decline.
E.J. @ Dec 11th 2008 9:08PM
Wow, 360 stomped PS3. I think it's really time for a PS3 price cut.
And Call of Duty: World at War going toe-to-toe with Gears of War 2?! Good job, Blizzavision!
It sucks that L4D didn't hit at least 500k on consoles, though. Great game, but I guess everyone knows that Valve shooters are meant for M/KB anyway.
enderjsv @ Dec 11th 2008 9:11PM
Actually, while that's true for most games, absolute precise aiming isn't really that necessary for L4D. I really think L4D was a great candidate for cross-platform gaming. Too bad Valve didn't see it that way.
RiccochetJ @ Dec 11th 2008 9:46PM
E.J. - Well if you think about it, Sony is increasing the price of all of their hardware. The PS3 was left alone. So it is kind of getting a price cut if you enter into my special magical world of thinking.
LaughingTarget @ Dec 11th 2008 9:51PM
Or Valve is seeing those hot Steam sales, which aren't reported to the NPD, and aren't caring much.

Fernando Rocker @ Dec 11th 2008 9:10PM
And where is LBP?
According to some readers from Joystiq, that was going to be game that would replace Mario and kill the Wii.
http://s129.photobucket.com/albums/p236/fernando_rocker/?action=view¤t=FunnyChart.jpg
And congratulations for both Nintendo and Microsoft... great sales for great consoles... bad sales for bad consoles...

Noshino @ Dec 11th 2008 9:44PM
Haha, man, it seems you have been hiding all this time and only come out when there are good Nintendo news AND there is a chance to say something bad about Sony...
....bah, who am I kidding, you always find a way to say something bad about Sony
Evan @ Dec 11th 2008 9:44PM
Where is LBP?
I love LBP, it's a great game. But it's a new I.P., and I expect many of the PS3's existing 18-24 year old demographic will be turned off by the "childish" graphics.
If LBP came out for the 360 instead, I think it would have been game over for the PS3! As it is, the 360 is on the verge of having enough youth-friendly content to satisfy parents to buy the system for their kids. LittleBigPlanet for the 360 could have been the tipping point that would have made the 360 a compelling alternative to the Wii and put even more $199 360s under Christmas trees this year. But LittleBigPlanet will have less of an effect on the PS3, because the PS3 is simply too expensive for one game to sway parents into putting it under the Christmas tree this year.
Moptimus Slime @ Dec 11th 2008 9:47PM
hey naxe, its alright to swear on the internet. Your mom isn't going to stop playing PopCaps latest crack adiction and stumble onto Joystiq anytime soon

I don't think you have any right to rag on me for saying the same thing over and over. I mean, if you did, that would make you a hypocrite.
And we all know tmac can't be described with negative adjectives.
tmacairjordan87 @ Dec 11th 2008 10:35PM
You literally say the same thing all the time though.
And I don't know how anyone could possibly have anything bad to say about me :P
Now excuse me, I"m trying to play some bowling in Home...and failing miserably.

Fernando: The PS3 is a bad system.

Hey! Don't paint everyone the same. Killjebus is infinitely more annoying than Fernando. At least Fernando is funny now and again. Kerrrrazy Ken is just a douche.

Hey Stew? are the anti-american posts really necessary? Grow up.
mazza_man @ Dec 12th 2008 5:08AM
Tmac fails cos he's, well, Tmac and Stew fails for being a moron.
Ultimately, Fernando wins because he actually made a good point. Which no one else can accept because their rabbid PS3 fanboys.
Noshino @ Dec 12th 2008 9:39AM
"Ultimately, Fernando wins because he actually made a good point."
What? He didn't make any point....you need some reading comprehension lessons
And even then, as for the low sales of LBP, well, I don't think the fact that it was on the PS3 was such a huge impact as many make it seem, the problem is the advertising was god awful (not surprising though as Sony's ads have been awful on the past 2-3 years), on top of that the launch was a mess, and also word of mouth wasn't good either
"bad sales for bad consoles..."
Seriously mazza_man, is that Fernando's good point? if so, then man do you need to seek help.
Once again, the PS3 is a superb machine, its just that it isn't a successful one (at least not thus far), but yah, that is something that Fernando will never want to accept

Jacksons @ Dec 11th 2008 9:15PM

RiccochetJ @ Dec 11th 2008 9:17PM
It's upsetting to see that the PS3 has sold less during the month than it did a year ago, and that LBP isn't in the top 10... Wii music is on there for chrissakes people! Oh, and I still can't connect to Home *glares at Sony*
On another note, hopefully with the L4D sales Valve will support it better than the Orange Box on the 360. I wanna see new levels dang it!
Evan @ Dec 11th 2008 10:00PM
That's really important because, in the history of video game consoles (PS2-GC-Xbox, PSX-N64-Saturn), no console has ever gone up after going down!
On the other hand, most systems that died out prematurely, did so around 10 million units (Dreamcast, Saturn, TurboGraphix16). The PS3 has surpassed that point and is easily on track to reach the sales of the original Xbox.
So while the PS3 may have already peaked, it's not going to die either.
David @ Dec 12th 2008 7:34AM
LBP was killed by its horrible ad campaign. Sony doesn't have anyone to blame but themselves and their ad people. LBP is great, but it can't be sold on a standard video game ad campaign. It doesn't look very good, the style doesn't make sense unless you know how it was literally put together using the level editor. Commercials I saw never showed off the level editor or online multiplayer either. Without those things, LBP is a platformer with poor controls, and nobody's gonna buy that.
