Activision to offer five free DLC tracks to GH: World Tour guitar bundle owners
A recent offer on the official Guitar Hero: World Tour site has had us scratching our heads all day (much to the chagrin of our dandruff-covered keyboards). The oddly-worded promotion states that if you purchase (or have purchased) the 360 or PS3 versions of the Complete Guitar Game bundle of GH:WT before the end of the year, you'll be able to "choose five free downloadable tracks." The promotional site is currently adorned with a banner asking potential downloaders to "check back soon".
We're confused as to why they're only extending the offer to purchasers of the $90 Complete Guitar Game bundle, which only includes a wireless guitar and the game disc, and not to owners of the $190 full band kit or standalone game -- perhaps its a measure to boost sales of the guitar bundle? We also don't know why Wii World Tour-ers are excluded from the deal. Also, from what pool will we be "choosing" our five free downloadable tracks? The pre-existing DLC? A new batch of track packs? The complete discography of Michael Bolton? Hopefully we'll know more when the promotion goes live.

i guess since its a band game, they know most people are only going to buy the full band set so they can play with friends or the standalone to use rock band's instruments with it. thus, buy offering this deal, more people would want to get the guitar bundle. if it applies to all current dlc, i would definitely get the hendrix pack and consoler of the lonely & salute your solution by the raconteurs.
EgoCheck616 @ Dec 13th 2008 8:55PM
You're saving 800 MS Points for 5 songs?
I think it would be better to just buy RB2...
-slycooper_rocker- (lorddshadow the amazing) psn: shahanasalam @ Dec 14th 2008 2:13AM
considering how i'm going to want to play drums, i'll get the full band set eventually. i was just saying the reasoning behind it.
Haggard @ Dec 14th 2008 10:41AM
"Consoler of the Lonely"
Kind of ironic given that you're only getting one guitar with it, eh?
Jagged Toaster @ Dec 13th 2008 8:51PM
Ah, darn. You beat me..
b1gsl1ck @ Dec 13th 2008 9:10PM
Maybe its for people who received two defective strum bars in a row like me.
Foetoid @ Dec 13th 2008 9:30PM
POS Activision showing disrespect to Wii owners. They were great offering SD Card support, now they've snubbed the Wii audience. I'd like to see sales comparisons of the game over the formats to see which one has sold better thus far, but with the Wiis install base, the Wii version would probably end up selling more. Why isn't the Wii version offered too?
Dragod @ Dec 13th 2008 9:34PM
If it's selling well, there's no reason to offer free stuff with it to encourage purchases.
Sora @ Dec 13th 2008 9:37PM
Maybe they're not giving the points for it and they're just straight up giving vouchers for the DLC so people won't buy something else, and the Wii Shop isn't set up to work with that? Just a guess.
Hafk @ Dec 13th 2008 10:11PM
Actually, I believe Sora is right.
It is possible to redeem a code on XBLM and PSN and get a certain item.
However, on the Wii, you can only redeem codes for points. Nintendo could update that.... but they most likely wont.
Foetoid @ Dec 13th 2008 10:36PM
You could give them your Wii Number or Friend Code or Serial Number or something. Then the next time you boot up the Music Shopping on GH:WT, you're greeted with 5 free songs?
SKI @ Dec 14th 2008 12:08AM
You can redeem codes, like for the Wii Speak Channel, and there were hints of redeem codes coming with games in the new update.
water.and.sand @ Dec 14th 2008 2:30AM
Activision/Red Octane has stated that the Wii's online infrastructure isn't set up to even be capable of offering track packs for the slightly lower price that other systems get them.
Wii owners are stuck with paying 200 Wii Points for every song, no 550 Wii Point deals here...
I assume this falls into that category. The only thing they could do is bundle 1000 Wii Points with it, which requires working with Nintendo and spending money to give things for free... and there's also the potential that people would simply spend the 1000 Wii Points on something else entirely.
(shrugs) I would. DLC is so far away from cost-efficient anyway... 25 songs= price of brand new game.
Dragod @ Dec 13th 2008 9:33PM
I'd rather get the Band Kit... $10 in DLC isn't that enticing, considering I'd like to play Drums as well.
I love the new Guitars. they feel perfect, I just wish they weren't wireless. I can't tell you how much I hate my Les Paul. I bought a second (and 3rd) Xplorer for $10 ea at Toys R Us, and I don't think I'll use my Les Paul again. Faulty buttons and batteries need changing every day.
If I could get wired GHWT Controller in a band kit, I'd be in heaven.

"The complete discography of Michael Bolton?"
ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING

Don't lie. I bet I can get ladies on their knees while reciting "When A Man Loves A Woman" in their Guitar Hero.
Mike T. @ Dec 15th 2008 3:10PM
I'll be honest with you, I love his music; I do! I'm a Michael Bolton fan. For my money, I don't know if it gets any better than when he sings "When a Man Loves a Woman".
I celebrate his entire collection.
Markez (Anti-Panda Death Murder Squadron) @ Dec 13th 2008 11:04PM
Where are these stupid douchebags coming from lately? I swear up until a month or so ago, I'd rarely EVER seen some stupid twat say 'first!' on Joystiq articles.
T @ Dec 13th 2008 11:13PM
I heard this promo...and I was scatching my head as well.
I know that right now, there are four songs available for free (the Activision Pack and the Guitar Duel packs released at the same time as the game)
There are also those three reggae songs that they are offering either next week or the week after, which would be 7 free songs.
I get this sneaky feeling that it's going to be those tracks.

I say those commenting "First!" be immediately banned from future posting. First time offenders or not.
Make it happen, O Mighty Bloggers.
megapenguinx @ Dec 14th 2008 3:31AM
I think there should be an option to report them for banning. This should count as some kind of spam
mietha CAG @ Dec 14th 2008 5:36AM
It's only $90 on the PS2, which doesn't have DLC. It's $100 on the other systems. Try reading your own articles that you link to next time... Version I bought. Just hope it's something new. I've bought everything they've released so far. Making it the Euro pack 2 would be awesome... Shouldn't it be coming REAL soon since it ends in 17 days?
lego91994 @ Dec 14th 2008 6:22AM
Actually, according to the latest Gamespot weekly flyer or whatever its called GHWT guitar kit is now $84.99 on PS3, Wii, and 360, and $74.99 on PS2.
Ethan Rom @ Dec 14th 2008 10:07AM
just picked up the guitar pack yesterday from gamestop for 85 bucks. Didn't know about the free songs though. woohoo

Rock Band 2 for 109 + tax with a 25 gift card for ps3 or 360. I just got mine this morning.

I'd say the real news is that the Hannah Montana (It's Miley!) guitar game is only $40! Talk about value for your money,
aristokrat @ Dec 14th 2008 3:33PM
Also, thanks for the heads up. Went down and got one myself.
The poor TRU employee who wrong me up was sad as he saw all of the bundles disappearing before he was going to have a chance to buy one.
Jagged Toaster @ Dec 14th 2008 10:57AM
Last time I checked, I'm pretty sure I was too.

Why doesn't someone at joystiq throw in a few lines of code to ignore or delay first posts that contain the word "first"?
mietha CAG @ Dec 16th 2008 5:12AM
Well, the promo is now live, but the "where to find your serial number" link is not. Any guesses?
mietha CAG @ Dec 16th 2008 5:23AM
Well, found the number (it's under the top battery), but when I entered them the first time, I had an error in the user ID, and it told me so. Now when I try to enter them, it says both numbers are invalid. There is still no mention of the pomotion on the GH site that I can find. Anyone actually get this to work yet?
Nathaniel Rundle @ Dec 17th 2008 12:12AM
I am having a similar problem. My owner ID on the back of my manual is 20 letters and numbers in 5 groups of 4, where as the redemption web site asks for 20 letters and numbers in 4 groups of 5. I tried entering them anyway but it comes back as invalid. WTF.
Caine Schneider @ Dec 17th 2008 2:17PM
Same deal here... The format of the Owner ID on the form does not match what is on the user manual. I tried putting the 20 characters in anyway but it said invalid owner id. I submitted something through customer support. Haven't heard anything yet.
Caine Schneider @ Dec 17th 2008 5:58PM
They changed the form, but I won't get to find out if it is fixed until I get home.
Nathaniel Rundle @ Dec 23rd 2008 12:03PM
It's fixed. You have to select from a list of ten songs:
Blind Melon - "No Rain", Oasis - "The Shock of the Lightning", Boston - "Rock and Roll Band", R.E.M. - "Supernatural Superserious", Foreigner "Hot Blooded", Raconteurs - "Salute your Solutions", The Killers - "Human", Rick Springfield - "Jessie's Girl", Nirvana - "Silver", Smashing Pumpkins - "The Everlasting Gaze".
The website is pretty poorly put together. The check boxes do not line up with the songs (look well below for the check boxes that correspond to the last two tracks). Once you submit some info (use the tab key to navigate to the addition questions) and select your songs, you'll get a message saying that you will receive an email within 4 to 6 weeks. Almost not worth it. Poorly executed Activision. Still, free is free. Good luck.
