This just in from the Spike VGA Awards: Gears of War 2 Combustible map pack, which includes Flood, Gold Rush and Fuel Station, will be available tonight at 3AM ET. No price mentioned. Now back to the liveblog ... Update: According to a source speaking to X3F, the map pack will be 800 points / $10.
I think they would be complete retards if they decided to release this map pack with the intention of charging for it. The multiplayer pairing system is slow as it is, can you imagine when 1/2 of the gears population doesnt have the maps you have? It'll take forever +1
It better be...If they are thinking that we're going to buy shit off Live for a game that is completely broken, they've got something else coming to 'em.
First off, 1/2 the population doesn't have the 5 free remake maps and the matchmaking handles it but not letting the be selected/voted-in when not everyone has it, so extra maps wouldn't be a big deal.
Secondly, what's with people feeling like they deserve free stuff? If I got something free every time something didn't work the way I thought it should, I would never have to buy anything in my life.
@ Erluti Wow that was ignorant. I don't know about you, but when I get hyped about something for 2 years and pay $60 for it, I expect it to be at least decent(which is not the case with GOW2 since it has glitches, lag, balancing issues and horrible design ideas). Well, since they released an incomplete game, I don't see anything wrong with asking for free compensation. What will tick me off even more if they charge for it is that while they should be fixing their crappy game, they are making more maps to steal more of our money.
Well to be fair then, if you don't like the game, free maps wouldn't help you anyway. There have been a lot more less completed games in the past. GoW2 is pretty solid in my opinion. Sure it has flaws, but what doesn't?
Don't be jumping all over Erluti's shit...he's just saying what a lot of us are feeling. I'd LOVE to get these maps free, but truth be told, the opportunity to play them fresh (still hooked on Horde) with friends is worth $10 to me. All the same, I can see where some folks are coming from if they don't have full-time jobs and a lot of bills to pay. My advice: Get a full-time job and buy it, or just wait until Gears 3 comes out and makes it free. Watch the sales figures, people WILL GLADLY buy this pack with or without your protests.
I can't believe people have started to accept this. Now matter how good a game or how good the DLC, releasing it less than a month after the games launch and charging for it is an insult to your customers - and YOU, gamers, should realise this. There's only two ways it could be ready this early:
1. It was meant to be included with the game, but was not ready at launch. So to keep to their launch schedule and ensure they get all the pre-christmas sales possible it was dropped.
2. It was planned as DLC from the start, because publishers hear the same things that are being said in this thread - "I will pay for DLC even if it's served up before the game's even finished spinning after my first play" - and are taking advantage of it to get more of your money.
Take your pick, but please don't try to claim that this is an acceptable practice.
How are they shoving maps down our throat? It's not like they're going to make you download them to continue playing the game online. Epic will probably make a separate playlist for the new maps just like Bungie did in Halo 3.
With the game shipped, as a small part of their team works out the bugs, the rest of the team can focus on map building, which, for a whole team, shouldn't take all that long.
Also, with the way game development works, after you get done with the game (especially when all the art is done and maybe they're just optimizing / doing code changes) it's probably an efficient use of their artist / level designer's time to go and make new maps while the rest of the team hammers out the game and addresses issues. After the game is done, they can't just add the new maps in because then they would have to retest everything so they hold off a little, tweak and test the maps and release them sometime after the game has shipped...
Ok...for all those bashing Gears of War 2 multiplayer it works. I played 5 hours last night and can vouch for speedier matchmaking. For everyone saying Gears is broken, this or that, you obviously haven't played since the last update. You guys knew there was an update right? You can take my word for it...or not.
On topic: I don't think I'm the only ones who think the combustible map pack should be released for free. Gears 2 only released 5 weeks ago, and three million gamers already own it. Three maps isn't enough incentive for $10. You don't have to buy it, but it's pretty cruddy when half your friends have the map pack and half don't.
you could play for hours without any snags, but there ARE problems in online play. keep playing, i guarantee YOU will experience the bullshittery that is happening to many...
I'm torn. Do I cave and pay for these because I love Gears, or do I resist to make a point about the shoddily-shipped multiplayer?
I feel like Epic don't DESERVE any more of my money (their response to people's issues has been mostly to ignore them, after all), but I'm sorely tempted to give it to them.
It's a shame such a brilliant series had to be developed by some uncaring fucktards.
Am I the only person who thinks $10 for three maps is a complete ripoff? $5 I would pay, or if there were more maps in the pack I'd pay $10... but this deal just isn't doing it for me.

Uh dude, what are you talking about? You can't even play half of the multiplayer modes without buying Halo's DLC.
I don't see Epic doing this, but I'm still not going to buy maps for a game I can't even play. Fix the game first, Epic. DLC second.
Cj @ Dec 16th 2008 6:54PM
Considering the only maps required to dld for halo are free your statement is totally invalid. You arn't required to dld the legendary map pack
Saneless @ Dec 14th 2008 10:09PM
Sweet. I'm sure they just developed this instead of holding back on the release that was only 5 weeks ago. That's what I think.
At least wait 3 months and pretend like you had to make new stuff.

There are way too may commas in that statement.

Shawn Handyside @ Dec 15th 2008 6:24PM
I didn't!
Maybe if people were a little more frugal on these map packs we could actually get them at a fair price.

Nobody cares about boring map packs for such a crappy game as Gears of War 2 :(
Paul @ Dec 15th 2008 12:54PM

Slappy san @ Dec 17th 2008 1:06PM
I'll probably buy the maps pack. I have MS points to burn off if I end up dumping my 360 because Gears 2's multiplayer sucks!
