A new TV ad is set to hit the airwaves, this time focusing on the PlayStation Store. The Video Deliver Service now offers films like The Dark Knight and Hancock, and SCEA is more than eager to let people know. The commercial will debut on Monday Night Football. We're wondering if the ad will convince any consumers to buy a PS3. Probably not. However, it should educate PS3 owners about this feature.

That would work a lot better if Sony hadn't STUPIDLY, suicidally, deliberately chosen to strip out backwards compatibility in the PS3, leaving the millions of PS2 owners with no particular reason to choose PS3 over the competition when they decide to go next-gen.

Sony can advertise all they want, the consumer wants a price drop, that's it. How many people have I met that would like a PS3 but don't get it because it's to expensive & they really don't need one at that price. There are alot of folks with 360 that don't need a PS3 really but when the price has dropped they are interested because of the AAA library. How many people with a 360 have I met that are waiting & thinking about this? possibly the huge majority of them. If you haven't noticed from the forums to the people @ work I see everyday. This is reality. Ads can only help so much. Lol just watch when the PS3 goes $349, that's what will sell. Like it or not.

At the local Media Markt I saw bare-bones PS3s being sold for €333 (and even an older 40GB DS3-less model for €299).
Of course, there were no games included, so most people probably just buy one for €400 and get a couple of free games or movies and a BD controller.

Sony does NOT need to drop its price.
That will drive its losses up sky high and start a death watch in the media, demoralize customers, and start a death spiral in the market.
Instead, Sony just needs to convey some simple facts:
1. A PS3 by itself is much cheaper than even a Blu-ray player and XBox put together, even the cheapest no-name junk player and the cheapest, most dumbed-down and crippled "Arcade" Xbox.
2. Owning a PS3 is cheaper than owning an Xbox 360, because playing online costs $50 a year with Xbox but is free with PS3. Over 5 years you can tack on $250 to the price of an Xbox, making even the cripppled "Arcade" version more pricey.
Goodbye goes Xbox's sole advantage: price.

We know that but practically with the 360's popularity it will not work. It sounds good to you & me but $50 price drop is what the consumer looks at. Moms & dad's this holiday aren't looking for the calculations & as much as it's proposed by Sony with your suggestions it just wil not sell well factually we know that.

I thought it was very effective. My wife normally just sits there and watches me play games, but when we saw that she got interested in seeing all that we could download. Hopefully more guys can use this as a tool to justify their PS3 purchase, even if it means having to download a few chick flicks.

This is pretty much exactly how I convinced my wife to get the PS3... Blu-Ray and streaming media.

Wow, I'm absolutely flabbergasted.
A PlayStation commercial that normal people can relate to, that shows at least a hint of the versatility of the PS3 and its potential as a home theater centerpiece item.
What happened, Sony? Maybe being in 3rd place and losing a gazillion dollars made you decide that ads like the following were stupid after al:
*Insulting Christians with a poster mocking The Passion by substituting the PlayStation action buttons for the Crown of Thorns;
*Insulting black and white people with Dutch posters for the white PSP showing white and black women aggressively humiliating and dominating each other;
*Committing vandalism with "ads" that were literally graffiti;
*Having an astroturf, fake fan blog called "All I Want for Christmas is a PSP" that pretended to be from a couple of teens when it was really from corporate HQ;
Bonus, though it isn't technically an ad, but also shows Sony's idiocy:
*Insulting Muslims with a verse from the Koran in LittleBig Planet
Yes, the ad above is rather weak, but hey, I'll take mediocrity over hair on fire, boot in bucket, falling down stairs into wedding cake spectacular stupidity any day.

This is a pretty good commercial. It shows that the PS3 is a TRUE family console (ie. games for the hardcore and videos for the rest).

hey the ad works it's getting the work out to the masses. Sure the video feature isn`lt in europe which is sad, but this ad is for a service in the states. the net is everywhere. features in one market may not be in others, this can be seen with the video service, ps1 download service, tv service everything isnt offered every where.The ads serves to inform those who dont know about a feature, trying to show every thing at once offen weaken the messege. Sure games want to see games but sometime using a hook like the blu-ray player, or video service gives the system an edge to somebody on the fence.Maybe Sony has learned a lessen from the Wii, some times less is more. Wii ads dont try to show of everything they pick one feature and run with it.Oh and as for (fox) they news is always lacking and full of mis infomation, they usually hype a negative view instead of give the full story.Hope this is the start Sony making better ads.

Andrew always has something negative to say about the playstation brand at the end of most of his posts.

The movie rentals are overpriced. With netflix on xbox you have like 12000 movies that you can watch anytime and as many times as you want. Xbox also has downloadable movies as well.
Ps3 should brag about their strengths not their weeknesses.
