Commenting on the 40-odd seconds of God of War III shown during last night's VGAs, series creator David Jaffe says that it looked good, but not as impressive as the game does in its most current form. You may recall that Jaffe had heaped some extremely high praise on the game's visuals after he recently saw it in action.
Last night's footage is only part of what he saw during an internal SCEA meeting, Jaffe revealed on his blog. "The stuff I saw that I raved about was probably finished 1-2 days before I got to the studios. The Spike stuff I saw had aleady been turned into Spike so it was 100% older," he explained.
"To give you an idea, the stuff I saw that I raved about looked about 25-30% better [than the HD footage Spike broadcast]," he said of the closed meeting footage, adding, "It happened to blow me away and remains the best looking console game I've ever seen ... beyond Gears 2 which so far is the best looking console game ever released." As for what Jaffe had to say to those who questioned his likening of GOW3 to a painting, well, you'll have to hit his blog to read that colorful prose (and watch a video of his thoughts on video game awards shows).

Yeah I thought the graphics in the trailer looked good, but it didn't really enlarge the scope. To me it looked like a pretty GoW2 and not much else. I have hope though, this is only the first glimpse of in-game stuff. In other words I thought the graphics looked good but the trailer fucking sucked.

It scares me that all everyone says is great about this game is the graphics. Pretty graphics do not make a great game. Hopefully they don't put everything on the back burner just to make things look pretty.

*phew* For a while there, I was concerned it would only be 23% better looking than the trailer shown.
Seriously, how do you grade visual quality like that? Is 100% "realer than real life?" like that Sony fanboy was arguing about Prologue? "It looks more real than the real cars!" Hah!

My response to any developer that hypes their game: "I'll believe it when I see it."
Not saying the game will look bad, just I've grown cynical over the multiple times where I've believed the hype and became disappointed.

Yeah, but the HAZE hype-train was amazing :) A lot of fun I had. Rob Yescombe is the shit!

Vegeta that's why when a developer starts talking about how great their game will be you just ignore them and you wont be let down by the game when it's released. I've been doing that for a few years now and I don't usually find new games disappointing but if a game really is sub standard this trick doesn't help.

Gears 2 another example. Not near the awful game of Haze but fell a bit short of all the cliffy hype.

I wanna see someone come out and say their upcoming game is crap..
" It look likes crap it plays like crap, he'll it even smells like crap".
Just to see of a little reverse logic works. I am willing to bet the first time it would.

@ King Torres--- I just quickly perused that article, and what I got out of it was that they called it crap after they released it....
I want the Hype train to start like a year before release....or the non hype train. You now show up to E3, no game play video at all or working demo. Just have someone standing on one side of the booth beside a whole bunch of low-res screen shots telling everyone to move along, and then on the other side have Roseanne (booth babe). Then in October have the CEO come out and say "everyone took early Christmas holidays, so we are putting the game out in 3 days"

Okay. I understand that this isn't the finished version, but just tell us it looks better. Don't try to quantify it.

In his defense I wanna add a few comments from his reply:
"It is NOT the thing I was raving about- as I made clear in a video post a week ago- but I still think it looks darn good. To me, the stuff Spike showed when viewed in proper resolution looks like a AAA God Of War to me. It doesn’t rock my world but it doesn’t look: meh. It looks like I’d expect a next-gen GOW to look. Granted, the team still has a long way to go and I imagine the final game- in all areas- will look much better. But I still thought it looked good."

So a AAA God of War, according to Jaffe, doesn't "rock [his] world" but it isn't "meh", either. Okay...
In any event, that pretty much sums up my opinion of the series as well. Thanks, Dave.

I hated it when Molyneax hyped Fable and I hate Jaffe now for doing the same for GOW3.
Guys, stop hyping and game and let it speak for itself when its completed. The last thing I want to see is a repeat of Haze or the smoke and mirrors created with the original Killzone 2 trailer.

I don't like the hype either, but I understand why they do it. It's free publicity. Considering our how many studios are shutting down due to poor sales, I'm sure these guys are gonna throw everything they have at publicizing their games, for better or worse.

So does this fall under the typical Sony theory of "waiting"
Now we have to "just wait the graphics will be better"
They were expecting people to go goo-goo over the vid and when they didn't they needed to come up with something fast.. and 25%-30% better was what they had..

Because we already know the gameplay will be fantastic. The series has already been through three lead designers and two developers and all the games have been masterpieces. Graphics are all we have to wonder about.

i'll abstain from jumping on the "Let's pan Sony games because of lousy trailers" train until i see more of the game. the last time i considering hopping on that train Sony stopped it dead in its tracks with some unparalleled, realtime KZ2 footage. i seriously doubt they'll drop the ball with God of War 3, considering it's probably their most popular franchise next to Gran Turismo.

I didn't get Spike in HD anyway so my trailer was in SD and looked pretty awful compared to my expectations. If you have an HDTV and a PS3 go download the trailer from the PSN marketplace. It looks much better.

It actually reminded me of Gears 2. Whatever that monster was looked like a Brumak. Pretty promising stuff for being this early in development.

David Jaffe Has Opinion
Noted video game developer David Jaffe today expressed his opinion on the current situation via his blog. He stated that certain online communities had been overly harsh in their criticisms and that had they employed further critical analysis they would arrive at a similar conclusion to his own.
He then went on to add that he likes Spiderman and holds a liberal political stance.
