Sony Europe: Home will become a system seller

With PlayStation 3 being dubbed a "sinking ship" on these shores, it could definitely use a system seller. Sony Europe sees PlayStation Home – not a game, but a social platform – becoming something that people will buy PS3 for across the pond.
Speaking with CVG, Home's European service manager, Dan Hill, remarked that, "In time I would say that Home will definitely become a reason to purchase [PS3]." Hill sees Home as a determining factor in future console purchases because, in his opinion, "no-one else is doing anything of this scale or ambition," and promises that, "If you buy a PS3 and you grow with us, as Home evolves, you are going to become part of something very special, something unlike you can experience anywhere else." Something like ... Quincying.

Indeed it will sell a lot of Wii's and 360's. ;)

Haha, nice one!
I was about to say... YEAH RIGHT!

Rec'd, I mean +1 :)
Home is boring as fuck! Doubt it ever gets that Beta label off.

I genuinely laughed. [+]

Fenix, don't forget: Home is also boring as shit. I thought I was the only one that thought this.
Obie @ Dec 15th 2008 5:11PM
I like Sony, I am typing this on a VAIO and will buy a Blu-ray player very soon, but come on...home is a trainwreck.
Duke @ Dec 15th 2008 5:34PM
I dunno guys, this is Europe we are talking about. I wouldn't be shocked to see this kind of social networking tool have a strong following there.
Ryan LN @ Dec 15th 2008 6:34PM
Agreed. After I was finally able to access home I found the whole experience to be criminally underwhelming. Perhaps it will serve as an additional "value added" feature in the same manner as the Blu-Ray player, but I don't see it appealing to any segment of the gaming community that would drop $400 on a console. Good luck with that, boys.
Alien Lord @ Dec 15th 2008 6:50PM
We already have a social networking tool on a console the NXE and the 360 as a whole.
Roto13 @ Dec 15th 2008 7:31PM
Come on, I don't think something like this is going to prevent people from buying a PS3. It is totally optional and free, after all. ;P
Duke @ Dec 16th 2008 3:28PM
I have no idea why people got mad over that comment above. WTF

Hmmmm, didn't a another executive from Sony Europe state, "We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even [if] it didn't have games."
Sony Europe should stop betting on red.
copa @ Dec 15th 2008 4:41PM
Sounds pretty prescient to me. The first five million did.
dextro @ Dec 15th 2008 5:04PM
The sad part is that they really did... I'm sick and tired of people bad mouthing the 360 and claiming the PS3 is the best thing since sliced bread.
I'm sorry PS3 fans but I just don't see the games on the system. The single exclusive title I want to play is MGS4 and I would probably only play it once (unless MGO is that good).
Still I'm in Europe and have a 360 and I'm already seeing a dark road ahead since Microsoft's position over here isn't that great...
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread - XBL: SoCoolCurt) @ Dec 15th 2008 8:37PM
i wouldnt say that the PS3 is the best thing since sliced bread, just alot better than people and media lead you to think it is. there are plenty of exclusives that i have tons of fun with on the PS3 along with all the WAY above average media functions. and lets be real, how many exclusives does the 360 have that make it so appealing to everyone (Halo, Gears of War, and i'll wait...)? now i do think the 360 has the best all around gaming experience what with all the JRPG's and family titles but the PS3 still have plenty of quality titles. i firmly believe that if it weren't for the price and state of the economy right now, we would be having a very different conversation about the PS3.
it is worth noting that i have had a 360 for about 2 months now and i think the thing is great, but i just play my PS3 more. maybe it's me being a media buff, maybe it's brand loyalty, who knows? either way, i think they are both fine machines but there are a few of us out there that do prefer the PS3 to the 360. why cant you just accept that?
BxGT @ Dec 15th 2008 4:39PM
wasn't the blue ray there system seller?

Well, I had a PS3, and I'm selling it, so looks to me like Sony has lots of system-sellers....

Shame it won't be anything good.
deaftly @ Dec 15th 2008 4:41PM
Sorny Urope you so silly
SoulPatch @ Dec 15th 2008 4:44PM
I don't have a PS3, but I've wanted one for the blu-ray player mostly, and a couple of their games. However, the price and lackluster game catalog has always turned me off. That's why I have a 360 and a Wii. But if Home grows into what it is capable of doing, I might buy it. So, for me, Home could be the last straw for me to go and pick one up.
BigD @ Dec 15th 2008 4:44PM
Home is one of the most disastrous things I have played. It's completely worthless IMO. You have a bunch of douche bags in a circle, dancing for no reason. Nothing else to do. Oh, you can play pool.
Duke @ Dec 15th 2008 5:37PM
That's kind of how I felt in the closed beta while people were saying how great it was. Also, it was always weird to have someone walk up to you and start talking about how neat it was to walk up and talk to strangers about how neat it was. Awkward.
gameplayFanBoy @ Dec 15th 2008 4:46PM
Not bloody likely.
Troggie @ Dec 15th 2008 4:54PM
"Special" as in short-bus "special"?

AHAHAHAHA HAAAAAA!!
=Curve= @ Dec 15th 2008 4:48PM
Hey, if they can make it so, then more power too them.
I mean, this is probably a load of crap, but if they are motivated to sell PS3's from the service, then I welcome it, anything would be better than what we have now.
They have the platform, they just need to utilize it better than now.
Moptimus Slime @ Dec 15th 2008 5:00PM
Sony Europe: Dewey Defeats Truman!
Moptimus Slime @ Dec 15th 2008 5:02PM
also, you have to realize that games like Habbo Hotel are almost 100% European. This is just the kind of shit they'd pay money to be a part of
Haggard @ Dec 15th 2008 5:14PM
Yeah, we pay like £3 for a game with actual social features.
Not £300 for a featureless second-life knockoff.
Maverick Saturn @ Dec 15th 2008 5:25PM
Mop sounds a bit retarded.
ice~ @ Dec 15th 2008 5:02PM
wow, it seems like even the sony fanboys hate sony now....
Edge @ Dec 15th 2008 5:04PM
Poor Sony. Just when they had the chance to rebut the sinking ship claim, they go and confirm it.
Edge @ Dec 15th 2008 5:05PM
You know what, I'll take that back. If Sony can do something with Home to make it a system seller, that would mean a huge improvement. It would mean the second coming.
It...wouldn't happen.
Arnon @ Dec 15th 2008 5:04PM
Just like Little Big Planet...
*staggers*
Roto13 @ Dec 15th 2008 8:10PM
Hey now, any of LittleBigPlanet's failures are because gamers are afraid of anything that isn't dripping testosterone. LBP is awesome.
Arnon @ Dec 16th 2008 12:03AM
LBP IS awesome.. but that doesn't excuse the fact that it didn't sell like SONY thought it would. Let alone, sell consoles.
Roto13 @ Dec 16th 2008 1:32AM
This is true, but I don't like it to be lumped in with Home. Home is ridiculous because it's a bad idea to begin with. It's Second Life. The fact that nobody likes it is Sony's fault. :P Not so much for LBP.
Arnon @ Dec 16th 2008 9:16AM
Totally agree, my friend.
bluesky_v2.01 @ Dec 15th 2008 5:04PM
First of all, sinking ship? - HA!
Second of all, Home is the worst of Sony's ideas. I got bored after 30 seconds of "playing" it.
borland502 (SDF Macross) @ Dec 15th 2008 5:09PM
'I got bored after 30 seconds of "playing" it.'
Dunno, out of the 99% assholes I saw on it I met two new people I added as friends. And once they get game launching up, it may finally achieve parity with XBL in getting a group together through many games. Without that though, ya, it's a fancy vent/IRC channel.
borland502 (SDF Macross) @ Dec 15th 2008 5:07PM
Oy, I actually like the service now and can't even remotely see "system seller" being true. It's a vent channel, a public/private vent channel, with 2nd life veneer. It's not the gaming equivalent of the coming of Christ.
Once they get the game launching feature up it may even be seen as damned useful. But system seller? No, no, and no you acid dropping executives. If the best reviewed game of all time, LBP, didn't do it then this certainly won't.
Marty @ Dec 15th 2008 5:10PM
Why would you load up Home to launch a game when you can just do that from the menu?
