honestly, theres no -reason- to play Home. it doesnt promote any kind of interaction with other players and nothing in it makes you want to come back for more.

the possibility of interaction is there, but theres an ingrediant missing to the formula to make Home more than just a social gathering.

At least the Miis and Avatars are cute and charming. Yeah I said it, my avatar is a cute little bastatd! :)

Just to be sure, you are talking about the amount of clothing or accessories you can apply to all three categories? In that case, yeah, Miis and Avatars probably blow 'Homers' out of the water.

However, the Home characters blow everything else out of the water in terms of customizing the likeness of an individual. Can you apply wrinkles, jaw proportionality, size, cranium shape, angle of the eyes or eyebrow, change eye color, or even change the WEIGHT? Last time I checked, not everyone in the world is skinny like the Miitars try to showcase.

Im not saying you have to appreciate or enjoy what Home is trying to offer through an OPEN BETA, but this type of comment destroys any credibility you have to offer.

It sounds to me like you're judging something based on what everyone else is telling you instead of checking it out for yourself. I believe there's a word for that...

Home characters are expressionless mannequins. Who cares if you can make it look like you, when it just stands there like a log. I'd prefer to have a LittleBigPlanet Sackboy, it might not look anything like me, but at least those things have expressions.

"Sony Europe: Home will become a system seller"

Really Sony? 75% of the time, I usually buy a video gaming console for video games 60% of the time.

Software sells systems, period. I suppose Home could count as software if you get technical, but not in its current incarnation. The top consoles win because of software. Hardware issues might help (waggle, DVDs, CDs), but ultimately it doesn't sell you the console if the software isn't there to back it up

Home might (operative word) help sell PS3's, but it can't be a killer app on its own.

I, again, think the social aspects of Home kick ass. Clubs, rosters, meeting members you don't know via said clubs and playing games instead of being shoved into matches based on your KDR or some shit.

It's a really cool idea, but neither Home or XBL are reasons to buy a console. Players and games are why, and both services just let you interact with them. Oh, SCEE, you always say the dumbest things.

Clubs, rosters, meeting members - none of those need a virtual world. They could all be done quicker and more efficiently on an internet forum.

Home reminds me of VRML/Web3D. 10 years ago, people thought it would be a good idea to present web sites as 3D environments inside the browser. It failed miserably, because people didn't want to move through a 3D environment when they could just scroll and click on 2D text and icons. There have been other attempts too, like creating a 3D desktop. It all fails because it's clunky and unnecessary when the same things can be done quicker and easier in a 2D text and icon interface.

well maybe having that 3D environment of Home feels more like a "game" to me than just scrolling through a box. i like being able to run around with my character, see a group of people interacting, run over, and join in. it just kind of "fits" with the whole gaming thing.

im not doubting that 2D environments could be more efficient but could it not be possible that the 3D environments from 10 years ago where just before their time? Home is great for social networking. i dont think it will move consoles or anything but it is a nice addition, feature, and box bullet point.

Sony: Silence! I kill you!

Don't you see people, Sony plans to secretly send out radio waves using special antennas placed around the world that will make you want to buy a PS3 because of Home.

Laugh about it now, but when you find yourself in a few months or even a year picking up a PS3 because of home, you'll soon realise how wrong you were and how right Sony Europe was :D

No, jarhead, it's the fact that Sony Europe is so off base with the US and Japan that it makes their comments look even worse. I can understand that each continent have different types of consumers, and marketing varies from here to there, but Europe makes the others look really bad sometimes.

People don't buy game consoles for the extras - they buy game consoles because of the games on it! With the PS3 and 360 adding all this social networking garbage (Home, avatars, trophies / achievements, etc.), it really reminds me of how consoles in the past would claim they were better than the competition because they had more powerful hardware. But, in the end, it didn't matter - consoles sell because there's games on it people want to play.

No one is going to buy a PS3 because they want to play a lame Second Life clone and to listen to mp3s on their console. People will buy a PS3 to play God of War III, Uncharted 2, and Killzone 2. Seriously, what would you rather do with your online friends - play a good game or dance in a pretend mall covered with in game ads?

Well, I was in the Home Beta and had great fun creating my avatar. I thought I would create a hot chick and then see what happens. Sure enough, I got TONS of friend invites right away! This is with having my profile AND gamer icon clearing showing that I am a man. I actually had desperate geeks chasing me and fighting over my avatar! Yep, probably the funniest thing I have ever done online. There is NO WAY women are going to like this thing for more than a few minutes because of the way the BOYS act. Way to scare them off...

I've noticed it is extremely easy to bash Home when everyone else is doing it. As a defense, it doesn't help that Joystiq put such a 'positive' spin on the Open Beta's release.

1. If Phil Harrison was in charge, he would have made sure Game Launching would have been available day 1, along with the Trophy Gallery/ Showroom.

2. I bet half the people in here haven't even seen the application let alone use it.

As someone else already mentioned, it is a fantastic way to interact with other gamers with similar tastes. It's extremely easy to go up to someone and view their PSN ID and add them to your friends list.

Best part is, you don't have to use it EVER.

What else I don't understand is why everyone is going apeshit over a Sony press article. Nintendo and Microsoft consistently praise their hardware/software. Why WOULDN'T they?

Even without Home, PSN users can do the same thing as XBL users.

Players Met -> (Select ID) -> Send Friend Request

I'll replace 'fantastic' with 'unique' or 'appeals to the demographic of gamers that get off to this kind of virtual application' or even 'free' or 'you don't have to EVER use it' or 'unfinished product'.

"If you buy a PS3 and you grow with us, as Home evolves, you are going to become part of something very special, something unlike you can experience anywhere else."

like Second Life maybe? Or any MMORPG ... except they actually have a reason to get into a 3D world as an avatar to talk to your friends?

I've had a PS3 since launch so I've been growing while Home was in the womb for two years. Where were you Sony?

Unless they decide to give Home some growth hormones so it becomes a fully realized thing with a point other than ripping you off 50 cents for a hat in the next 6 months, nobody will care. People will be looking at the next-next gen in 12 months and the only thing Home will grow is impatience. Like PS users waiting to find a reason for sixaxis control.

Too late to start growing something "new" now Sony, game evolution kept going while you were all thinking about it.

And why is it that every game I get for it ends up being in 720p while the same games in 360 are always in 1080p. People need to wake up and see the wool being thrown over our eyes about how powerful this system really is. And another thing the damn installations and even after the installations there are long load times. Ie Prince of persia. I own all three and wii being the least favorite.

I can see that on the 360 fanboy site, but here?

As for Home being a system seller. Maybe 5 years ago when Second Life was real big. There's going to have to be a lot of work on it before they expect people to buy a PS3 just for that. I mean a hell of a lot of work. It's works well now but it just needs more content.
