Kratos will be hanging up his swords after God of War III, though we hope he does something about those chains first. Sony has revealed that the upcoming sequel will be "the last installment" in the series, leaving the Ghost of Sparta to find creative ways to make beheadings and impalement look good on his resume.
According to Sony, the game will also boast four times the texture resolution seen in God of War II, as well as dynamic lighting and more on-screen enemies than before, which goes a long way explaining why David Jaffe's jaw is still on the floor. Do something about that, will you?

yeah. It's over the same way Halo is over. Either new title or new protagonist.

Yeah, I imagine This will be the end of Kratos's story but not God of War. However I do imagine the universe will be put to rest after this series for a bit as new franchises really start to come online. *drools for Uncharted 2*

well it makes sense. he's out to finish off the gods once and for all. either they die or he does. it's kinda hard to continue a series without the instantly recognizable main character (i'm looking at you MGS) and to make a story based on greek mythology without the gods. just sayin'.

Honestly, I've seen video games and movies make plots when there shouldn't be one for sequels.
Here it goes: (has he killed the Titans yet?) Well, when he kills Time, time collapses, folds in on itself, and Chaos rebirths the universe. Bam. Done. Now we can make more God of Wars.

Why? Why do series need to end? I can understand putting the series to rest until the game can make the improvements fundamentally to satisfy people but why must developers and the like declare a game series finished? Can't they just say "no plans for *x series*".
Ah well whatever Halo ending in a trilogy turned out fantastic. (See Halo: ODST/Recon)

Isn't ODST an expansion? Seriously asking.

True, it is an expansion. However as I recall Bungie wanted to end Halo and move onto newer, different projects.

Well I remember hearing that Gears was also supposed to be a trilogy. I guess we will have to see how that works out. Since Halo Wars is an RTS that takes place in the Halo universe and ODTS is an expansion I wouldn't say that the rule has been broken about Halo being a trilogy. In all honesty I would be hard pressed to believe that MS will not release Halo as a launch game on their next console. Maybe a prequel in the vein of Halo Wars or maybe in the future. Who knows. At this point Halo did end a trilogy and this new game is an expansion. It's a mere technicality but it's true.

see: star wars.
original trilogies are good.
see: aliens.
quadrilogies can be OK but it'll be hit or miss
see: saw, horror movies in general.
series with no definite end, with a "final movie" that wraps shit up, start sucking.
if the series has no end, people will start stabbing their eyes with compasses
are those relevant examples? movies no less, but with games these days...

Final Fantasy is a wrong example. The numbered series are not sequels to each other. For example FF XIII is not related to FF XII, but Revenant Wings is to FF XII.

A couple things: No movie/game/book/whatever should be written intentionally as a series. You should create your story and break it up if it's just too big, but ideally each time you make a movie/game/book/whatever it should be good on it's own merits.
Another thing: Halo 2 and 3 are a sham in the campaign department. They were meant to be the same game, but Microsoft said "Finish whatever level your on and call it Halo 2, we need Halo 3 for the 360." So Halo 2 ends up with it's terrible nonsensical ending and then the couple levels that would have wrapped up Halo 2 have to get extended into 12 levels so Halo 3 has a campaign and it makes the whole campaign kinda suck. Luckily Halo 2 re-invented matchmaking with the party system and Halo 3 just created a sweet and polished multi-player, preventing the games from falling into irrelevance.

All good things must come to an end. This may be the last God Of War game but I would venture to guess we will see spiritual successors like Heavenly Sword 2 eventually to scratch that itch. It's obvious to me that Sony is (for whatever reason) using this generation to usher in entire new IP's instead of constant sequels. Not that they haven't released sequels but it's obvious with the state of 3rd party exclusives all but dead they are focusing on creating new IP's. Funny enough that some of these new IP's were from 3rd parties.
Help me out here people ...
Heavenly Sword
Little Big Planet
Folklore
Uncharted
Resistance
Lair
Motorstorm
Haze
Valkyria Chronicles
Not that they were all good or will have sequels (Haze & Lair) but it is pretty interesting. We also have MAG, White Knight Chronicles, Yakuza 3, Heavy Rain, Infamous, Quantum Theory, Wardevil and the new Team Ico project for 2009. I am not trying to credit Sony with all these projects but am just stating some new IP's.
Another funny note is that the 360 has one of my most anticipated games as an exclusive - Champions Online. Maybe Atari purchasing the developer will have it shift multiplatform.

They haven't announced if it will be subscription based or not to my knowledge. I know that it was planned as a 360 exclusive. If not for the PS3 hopefully it drops on the PC as well.

Halo...a trilogy?
Microsoft said that, but are now trying to find every excuse to make a fourth installment, they are just itching to continue it, thus the reason for reacon. Thay can't leave Halo alone.
I can't see spinoffs etc happening with GOW, its too focused on Kratos and the story has to end eventually there are only so many greek gods and greek monsters in existance to put in the game, people will get bored of seeing the same old thing.
That doesn't mean GOW's legacy can't live on through another new IP. GOW will quickly be replaced with the next GOW type game. Hopefully in ancient Egypt this time :D Forget Prince of persia, aim for Egypt!

Great suggestion! The Egypt angle would be wicked.
I think Heavenly Sword could be the spiritual successor to God Of War but we have seen Kratos in sack form and on the golf course so I doubt we have seen the end of him. Maybe a GOD fighting game ... LOL ... my point is God Of War might be a trilogy but Kratos will pop up in something else. Bet on it.

Heavenly Sword did not suck. The only thing that sucked was that there wasn't another 8 hours of it on the disc. Best facial animations and motion capture I have seen this generation.

heavenly sword is fun and refreshing, yet repetitive, i only hate when it turns into hellish bows & arrows instead of heavenly sword. i hate controlling the bow girl. if the controls were setup good, her parts would be easier and fun.

Heavenly sword was a divine game, however, it just doesn't cut it in my opinion, HS could never be a God of war, it's too graceful while GOW shouts 'fuck graceful' and tears another monsters head off with his bare hands, impales a hydra and smashes a basilisk with a pillar.
Thats the whole purpose of GOW, to make us feel manly!! Which is why we get slightly annoyed when tears stream down his face about his family ¬_¬ then again you can kinda understand why, lol.
But we play GOW and Gears to get away from the wimpy likes of Halo, Rachet and clank and Heavenly Sword, we play God of war to feel like a God. Brutally headbutting creatures, slamming thier heads into rocks, tearing out thier eyes, breaking bones, ripping creatures in half, decapitating monsters.
I'm sorry, but as good as Heavenly Sword is, it could never fill my God of War gap, thats like telling me Halo should fill my Gears gap or Driver should fill my GTA4 gap.

The fourth God of War should have a new character the looks and plays like kratos but is different because he has something different like a magical arm or something.

I don't necessarily have a problem with 'retiring' series and franchises, especially if they produce something new...
Naughty Gods made the Crash series, then Jak series, and then dropped Jak to create Uncharted which is shaping up to be one of the better new IPs this generation.
I'm all for ending a series on a high note, tying up loose ends, finishing the series and moving on...If it weren't for that, we wouldn't have many new and good IP's as everyone would be working on sequel after sequel, and eventually things become stale.

Maybe they could make a sort of spiritual succesor to God of War where they replace the Greek stuff with vikings instead, you could play as Tyr, Thor, or some forgotten viking hero in the same way kratos existed in Greek myth but no one knew him

Meh, I'm pretty cynical when it comes to developers claiming that a game will be the last in the franchise, especially for a franchise that's as big as God of War. So I wouldn't be surprised if there is a spin off or two.

Yeah, he wanted it to be HIS last MGS game, but as I understood it, there was every intention on Konami's part to make at least another MGS.
If they left all the questions posed by MGS2 unanswered, I have a feeling fans the world over would be thrown into an uncontrollable nerd-rage.
There may yet be more Metal Gear games, but the "Solid" series is over apparently.
