A game based on a television show based on a comic strip which involves a green rabbit who flies through space in order to thwart an empire of evil toads? Makes sense to me. Bucky O'Hare is one of the lesser-known anthropomorphic heroes from the early 1990's flood of cartoons. I enjoyed the series as a child, but it was admittedly nothing particularly special. The game based on the cartoon, however, is undoubtedly fantastic.
Developers, take note. Almost any game can be made better by having a diverse cast of characters endowed with different abilities. These abilities can be consolidated into one protagonist, but the additional playing choices adds character to the title. By using a variety of methods to play through a standard level can turn a standard romp into a tapestry. Bucky O'Hare does this excellently by incorporating various elements of typical side-scrollers of the time and presenting them with tight controls and fun gameplay. Additionally, the levels present fun and unique challenges. These include an entire vertical level which is traversed by jumping onto the roofs of passing airships, a Battletoads-style level where you traverse a pit by riding giant mechanical snakes, and a jail level in which you must find and rescue all of your comrades. I can't see Konami going out of its way to secure the license for a Virtual Console release, so you might need to eBay your way to experiencing this masterpiece.
