Trying to be nice about Sonic and the Black Knight
18
Even though Sonic Unleashed disagreed with us, we're going to try and maintain some optimism for Sonic and the Black Knight; after all, that's what The Cycle demands of us all, right? So let's see if we can make it through a whole Sonic post without being snarky jerks ... go!
Nintendo Power's Sonic and the Black Knight preview has produced a pile of unrelated tidbits about the game. Some of which sound rather good, such as the news that there will be two interweaving paths throughout the title. You'll begin at Misty Lake, before progressing through Camelot Castle, Molten Mine, and Titanic Plain (where you can cut the grass with your sword, Caliburn -- a nice touch). In combat, you'll be able to incorporate different fighting styles; the new skills you gain depend on the style in which you played the level. You can also customize characters by granting them certain abilities, such as immunity from elemental status ailments.
Oh yes, and plenty of Sonic's friends will be milling about. In what could be a genuinely interesting twist, Tails plays the role of blacksmith in this game, turning junk you collect into handy devices. Nintendo Power also confirms the presence of Knuckles, Blaze, and Shadow! Shadow!! That's (*grits teeth really, really hard*) brilliant news!

C'mon. Shadow is the one (I'm ignoring the game featuring him) likable cast addition since Knuckles.

I agree. Shadow's good as a friend, it's when you actually put too much focus on him that it gets sickening. Some characters just aren't meant to be heroes, right?
Besides. Sonic & the Black Knight is going to kick ass. Chris be hatin'.

I'm sorry! :( I'm honestly trying my best to keep an open mind on this one. And seriously: the making devices-from-junk thing does sound interesting to me, as does the idea of different fighting styles. I just want them to get the combat right, ya know? I thought it was too imprecise in Unleashed (though I know we disagreed on the werehog stages).
I don't even think Sonic has to necessarily be a fast platformer -- that's worked brilliantly in the past, obviously, but if Sonic Team can make something like, say, a platformer with the same ingenuity as a Ratchet & Clank, I'm all for that!

Yeah, I mean seriously... I'm getting sick of Shadow being slammed. I've never seen Sonic as such as cool character... I mean really, wow, a blue hedgehog that runs fast. That's about it. Fact is, half of Sonic's friends are cooler than him... okay, maybe not half (crossing out Big, Creme, Amy, Silver, Rouge... *rambles on* Seriously though, I mean Shadow, Knuckles, maybe even Tails (if you go back to the games before he decided to start talking) are all cooler than Sonic, IMO. Yes, Shadow's game is crap, I'm happy to admit; yes, the action oriented games were the best in the series (though I loved the Chao Gardens, I want those back). But I don't see any reason to hate on ALL of Sonic's friends... just hate on most of them. Especially since they need to add more... every... effin'... game...
Oh, and especially since they decided they want a rainbow of hedgehogs.
And yes, I do hate almost all the games released... Unleashed at least has some of my interest with that classic Sonic action... in half the game... :(

I am trying to remain optomistic about this game - unleashed was "meh" but hopefully this will just be a nice twist and a slightly above the average of recent sonic games

Well, i'm still on high hopes even though of the great failure unleashed ended to be.
Besides, i'm all in in something similar to was Fable could be on the Wii, and with a high speed gameplay, this might be perfect!!!!!
Lets give the benefit od doubt to this game and forget of unleashed

Well, I'm going to say something positive!
Those graphics look nice! And I notice a distinct lack of werehog!
Still not interested, though...

i still remain confident in this game. call me a deluded fanboy if you like but it won't change a thing. besides the way i see it is that so many sonic games have disappointed so many people that people bash sonic games as if it were a hobby.

Dear Sega,
Learn from Capcom (from Mega Man 9), give us a 2-D Sonic game on WiiWare, Xbox Live or PSN and give us back what made Sonic great. No friends (outside Tails and Knuckles), no RPG elements, no gimmicks, just Sonic running and collecting rings.
As in the case of Sonic and the Black Knight I can take the bad armor more seriously then the "werehog" garbage. And while it I know many didn't like Sonic and the Secret Ring (and it was FAR from perfect) is was a bit more running it just needed a bit more a tighter and fixed control.
Rant done.

Shadow = Riku, in term of exposure-to-likeability quotient? I mean, the most seen of Riku at one time was the 'second quest' in COM/Re:CoM.
Anyway, MY request to Sega? Put that cartoon-only character into a game. Heck, have it be some parallel/alternate unvierse gig or somethin'. Sally... *looks up name* Sally Acorn. PRINCESS Sally Acron. Hell, put her in THIS game.

This sounds nothing like a Sonic the Hedgehog game.
...But it does sound like it has a lot of potential on its own merit. It could be an awesome game, provided one is willing to open their mind and not EXPECT a Sonic the Hedgehog game. :) It's a game with Sonic in it, not a Sonic game - sort of like no one expects Mario Kart or Mario RPG to play just like Mario Bros.
There, there's a positive spin on this!

Tails as a blacksmith... weird but yet it fits like Luigi's Final Smash. And Knuckles in the Gallery he's fighting Sonic and wearing a helmet, he is nether brainwash, tricked, or the Master Emerald is back along with being ticked.

I think there is a faction of people who liked Sonic Unleashed, they just aren't as vocal about it.
