In response to the letter from FatAtHeart,

the dash is stored on the motherboard of the 360 just like the bios in a computers motherboard. The Dashboard is the operating system of the 360 and since the 360 can run without a hard drive, the OS needs to be someplace else. so unless your friend gives you his actual console to download the dash on, hes stuck without it until he gets internet back.

For the NXE, the system stores the majority of the update in the motherboard. Remember the two-part install for the NXE? My router was having issues with part two, and so I had to direct connect my 360 to LIVE to do it (that router has died since, and I have replaced it).

However, part 1 gave the full NXE. Also, remember how you could download the NXE from the internet and install it with a flash drive, but it wouldn't give you avatars? That's part 1. This part is stored exclusively in your Xbox 360 console's motherboard.

Part 2 is LIVE features, Avatar support, and the intro video upon the initial NXE boot.

The hard-drive does store both parts. Put your HDD into the non-NXE system, and presto he gets NXE (I think - that's how it worked during the preview).

Or, an easier way would be to burn a CD/DVD from the link here:

Headshot: that is likely a NAT problem, likely with your router. What does it say if you plug straight in to your modem? If it is still strict or moderate, then it is most likely your isp. If it then says open, you need to configure your router, opening ports on it. I have had to do it a few times and it is not too hard to figure out how to do. Just google your router and open ports and you should find stuff. Vague, but hard to succinctly explain. I had that problem for a while while living in on campus housing. They would not do anything to fix it, so I had to deal with it till I moved out.

yah, i know some ISP keep you at moderate even if you're plugged straight into your modem. I have Time Warner (RoadRunner) and I have that probem. Anyone know if calling them helps?

I doubt calling would help. I had TW (now Comcast) but never had NAT problems. I wonder if modems can add NAT restrictions. I had theirs for a while, but then bought my own and neither had that problem. I have a linksys cable modem (cm100, the all black version) and router (wrt54g) and neither give me problems. Gotta say, though, the new modem sped up my internet a ton. They rented me such a POS.

The absolute first thing you should do with your router is enable uPnP.

This allows Xbox LIVE to select the ports for your 360 console and have them forwarded by the router. (For example, the default ports for LIVE are 88 and 3074. However, Games for Windows LIVE allows you to see the ports in use, and with uPnP enabled, my H2V is using port 39931)

After enabling uPnP, it may take a few reboots of your router and 360 console to start the uPnP mapping. Make sure your 360 is using DHCP (Automatic IP address), as some routers do not map ports via uPnP to static IP addresses.

If this doesn't work, try enabling port triggering for UDP port 88 and UDP/TCP port 3074.

If that doesn't work, try port forwarding for UDP port 88 and UDP/TCP port 3074 to your Xbox 360 console.

If that doesn't work, try setting your console as a DMZ in your router's setting.

If THAT doesn't work, contact your Internet Service Provider.

definitely go with the DMZ.

@Guatamalen, try downloading the content when your xbox is connected directly to your modem. I sometimes have a problem downloading large files from XBL (i.e. the recent EndWar DLC) until I bypass my router and directly connect (even though my xbox is in the DMZ)...

Depending on your router, you can also try switching to "Static Port" mode and that should fix it. http://tumblelog.marco.org/65083249

@FatAtHeart,

Just go here to download and burn the update to a cd/dvd:

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox360/console/systemupdates.htm

Complete instructions are on that page, after you've burned a CD and your friend has installed, he'll be enjoying the NXE goodness same as the rest of us, internet connection be damned!

FatAtHeart, it actually is possible. I updated my non-live friend by swapping hard drives.
1. Put your hard drive in his console, basic update, no avatar editor.
2. Take his hard-drive and put it in your console for the Avatar editor.

Sorry I Didn't see your name up there but the person with the issue downloading the xbox original games i was able to replicate your problem from choosing to set a proxy at places not on the list of cert xbox live places which is unfortinate however since you have already used the microsoft points and they probley wont re-emburce you for them i would sujest setting up a proxy of your own on your router (if your router is compatible) or if you have a laptop (or another computer with 2 nics) share out your eithernet connection so that your xbox is connected to the laptop and the laptop to the internet and run a proxy on your computer (THIS WILL BE VERY SLOW) but if you leave it on over night or turn on background download (download while console is off) then you should have them in the morning.

if you don't understand anything i said here i can send you some guides

The 99% download problem coud be a bad hard drive. I know from experience that some HDDs out there have bad sectors, and there is nothing you can do about it. There is no utility (That I'm aware of) that lets you scan for bad sectors. I've tried the Cache clearing trick and it still doesn't work.

As soon as I get to the 1-2GB remaining point on the hard drive stuff is corrupted and can't play. I have to go and delete old content and re-download to be able to watch/play it.

The worst part: I can't install any games to the HDD.

That sounds a LOT more like the issue than a region-lock problem. Seems like a bad way to implement a 'lock' if you can see and ALMOST download something your entire region can't actually have...

My bet is the clothing issue is a function of workload. Allowing both male avatars to use female hairstyles takes no extra work: head shape and size are pretty close, so the same hair models can be used.

The avatar body shapes are different though, so new meshes would have to be created for all the female clothes to appear correctly on a male avatar; obviously not worth the time.

Cheers X3F for answering the cross dressing answers. Kinda makes sense.

Didn't know that the Mii's and PSHome didn't allow it either. Perhaps MS could be pioneering rather than copying the others :)
