Behold the PS3: a 'movie downloading machine'
126
With a commercial that has a clear message and is blessedly miles away from the company's ads of yore, Sony launched its Video Delivery Service ad campaign last night during Monday Night Football. The spot features a 20- or 30-something who justifies his purchase of a PS3 to his skeptical girlfriend by calling it a "movie downloading machine."
Sony states it currently has 1000 full-length movies and 2700 TV episodes for download. Check out the full ad after the break. Now, if Sony would only change its thoughts about Netflix.

and if you're lucky the next HD movie you pay $6 for might have 5.1 sound instead of stereo.
Maybe Sony are intentionally driving viewers to buy Blu-ray by offering piss poor audio.

The ad just mirrors what genuine 20-30 year olds try to think / say to their other halves to justify spending the cash on a ps3. I pretty much said exactly the same thing to my wife, and still marries, but with new ps3!

I feel mixed about the video service. I mean, when it first came out I rented an episode of The Family Guy, just to try it out and was dissapointed at the quality, so I more or less thought it would suck. And since I subscribe to Netflix I was reluctant to download any movies off there and increase what I spend per month on entertainment. Then I kept on hearing about PlayOn and I tried it out and (for me at least) it kills to Sony video store. I can get all of my 'watch it now' queue off Netflix, keep up-to-date on my Office and Family Guy, and check out YouTube and all that. And the best part is the quality is totally good! To me, and from what I understand about the Netflix access on the 360, this is a much better deal, even including the $30, one-time PlayOn licensing fee. I have always been impressed with the PS3, and with the addition of this easy to use media server my respect for it has grown by leaps and bounds.

Downloading movies from Netflix if free if you are on an unlimited plan. Watch away!
Honestly, the 360 videos work much better. It gives you a popup when the movie is loaded enough to play all the way through. With PS3, you have to guesstimate.

I don't understand your unlimited plan comment, but you're right. The privilege to watch movies instantly from your queue (if they're part of the 'watch it now' list) is free across most Netflix plans.
As for problems streaming, there is a delay at the front end of starting a movie, but once it begins it's fine. It even appears that the PS3 is upscaling the video, which adds to the quality immensely!!

I know it does, but do you still need to pay for an account through MS to be able to use it? If not then that makes the whole Netflix access through the NXE pointless, right? I don't know much about the 360, so please excuse my ignorance...

Huh.. an MDM, eh?
I thought it was a blu-ray player.
Why don't they play to their strengths? Downloads is not exactly a mainstream activity. Watching a blu-ray is becoming one however. which some of the numbers out there are indicating.

I believe the legitimate point that can be made is that, if their service is in fact inferior to others that are available, then they should have done more with it before making an ad that is devoted, exclusively, to that feature of the machine.
I don't think that (or, rather, I hope that) no one is dumb enough to say "why would you even advertise it?" Obviously, you have to advertise your features even if they aren't the greatest...especially if they aren't the greatest (because you have to make them look like they are).
However, that doesn't mean that they shouldn't be criticized for advertising an inferior product. They SHOULD advertise of course, but they place a lot of weight on the service by advertising it by itself, actually in lieu of advertising the actual games.
Case in point: if you release a download service that is already bested by others in the market, you should advertise it as awesome and then people who know better should rip on you for your inferior product. The solution being to make a better product before you release and advertise it.
(And please note, I know little to nothing about the actual quality of the service - I am just going off of the consensus that I have seen here.)

Wow. I'd like to see any wife who stands for that without rolling her eyes. My wife would be pissed if I even tried to pull the wool over her eyes like that.

The 'movie downloading machine' name is not what Sony is actually calling their PS3 now, it's the fake name the guy in the commercial tries to run past his girlfriend, who behaves exactly like many girlfriends/wives, skeptical about how a game console, a PS3, would benefit her. The guy's trying to hide the 'gameplaying' aspect from her, what he bought it for in the first place, we have to assume, as he invites his friends over to play Resistance 2 and Motorstorm 2.
What's the problem with noting that the console allows for movie rentals/downloads? How many excited comments did I see about Netflix arriving on the 360? A lot.
I see so many comments here acting like Sony is trying to change the focus of the machine - in fact, this hightlights exactly what they've been doing all along - showing that the PS3 does a lot of things.

But isn't that the problem? I think more people have a problem with sony trying to market the ps3 as a super awesome media device instead of simply a gaming device. Which to be honest, isn't that what they should be doing? All this stuff is just bells and whistle to a console, but they should be marketing it as a gaming console since most people view the ps3(as well as the 360 and Wii) as just that, a gaming console.

Really? Where? Cause I haven't seen any television advertisements for the netflix thing on 360. Then again I may be wrong since I rarely watch live tv.

The simple fact of the matter is that for the PS3 to break out of it's slump, or more accurately simply be given a fair shake, is to show in simple clarity what the thing can do. It's what they've been failing to do for the past two years.
Yes the price could stand a drop, there's no denying that, but there's nothing wrong with PSN or customer service, Home is still in it's earliest stages, and there are plenty of worthwhile games so they need to justify the cost. With netflix you still need to have a monthly membership. With PSN you just need to turn on your PS3.

I have a movie downloading machine already... It's called an Xbox 360 with Netflix. The HD looks pretty darn good on a 52" LCD. No where near as good as 1080p, but still plenty good enough for a late night movie. I would love to watch Netflix on my PS3 but they haven't integrated it yet. Why don't they just work a deal with Blockbuster? Everyone knows who they are and it seems like a natural.

"Are Sony and Blockbuster looking to form an alliance to bring Blockbuster's DOWNLOAD video offer to the PS3? We'll know by 'early next year' says Blockbuster."
Download.. yup, that killed it. Now people will be waiting hours (maybe even days) on end to download Blu-Ray to their console.
Instant Streaming > Downloading.. especially if a company like Netflix is already working on instantly streaming HD.
Not to mention it would be completely pointless due to the fact that the PSN already has a Video store.

A much, much better advertisement would go something like this: Hi, it's me, Sony. I have some good news for you video game fans. We've come off our bullshit and are going lower our price to $299.

Dear Sony, Microsoft, Apple etc....
I do not want to pay 3, 4, 5 almost 6 dollars to watch and/or rent movies on your services, where i have to wait all night to download and always spend time managing data on my console/system/device. With services like netflix, netflix streaming, redbox, and other various online sites, why would i waste all of my money on your service? seriously.... 5 dollars to "rent" (and wait for a HD movie to download) is insane....
Maybe try 1 dollar rentals...and tv shows can be free with a commercial every so often like abc does on their tv show streaming service.....
just sayin'

You know, I don't know what the deal is, but our PS3 has horrible wireless. It's extremely slow. I don't know if it's the actual console or if the Playstation service is just that slow, but the Xbox seriously cruises compared to the PS3. So I'd be really wary of downloading any big files on the PS3 for that reason. It'd take forever.

I'm insulted by this ad. Sony assumes that people are just idiots and will never research anything. Like someone will never look to see if the competition does a better job at playing movies (xbox). They just assume people will see this add and think that movies are the ps3's strong suit. I hope xbox does a counter ad just to humiliate Sony. I swear they have baboons running that company.
