Capcom is often derided for rehashing its fighting games time after time, either through simple ports or tweaked releases that offer a few new balance changes or new characters. When your titles start to grow as long as Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, you know you're dealing with a game with some serious history. But, as HD Remix's name also implies, this generation offers us something new. Though the Wii only supports 480p outputs,
the new 3D Tatsunoko vs. Capcom graphics are absolutely gorgeous, and Udon's 1080p work with HD Remix is nearly as impressive. For the first time, there's something seriously new Capcom can do with games such as Marvel vs. Capcom 2 -- and they absolutely deserve it.Unfortunately, Capcom's licensing deal with Marvel expired several years ago, sending prices of the scarce PS2 and Xbox versions of the game soaring. However, word is that Capcom and Marvel may not be done with one another forever. If the two ever reunite, a grand rebirth MvC2 needs to be at the forefront of their combined might. Imagine Captain Commando and War Machine, gorgeously cel-shaded in the new Tatsunoko style, going at it with help from over two dozen fighters on each side. Now imagine that game released for the Wii, PSN, or Xbox Live Arcade, complete with this generation's most important contribution -- online play.
Unlike some of our pipe dreams here at Born for Wii, wonderful as they may be, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 has a decent chance at a remake. The game recently popped up on the ESRB's website with new entries for the Xbox 360 and PS3. It's not a solid guarantee, but it's a hopeful sign. Could strong sales for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom in Japan spur a Wii release, as well?
SSFIITHD has proven that Capcom fighters can work online, given solid enough netcode. Unfortunately, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom lacks such a feature. Maybe that means it's really time for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 to make a triumphant return, delivering the fast and frenetic brand of whoopass to the tubes only it can. Old sprites or new 3D hotness, MvC2 will remain an incredibly fun game. With any luck, we'll see the vs. series return to its former glory in the next few years, whether it's in the form of updated classics or more exciting and new products.
