You know what, I have to give them credit for at least pointing out that parental involvement is part of the problem, unlike most other media outlets (Fox News anyone?) who simply point their finger at the industry and say "ahh there? you see!? they're doing it again!!"

However, what the hell is up with that "games ok to play" list? Did they actually do any research on any of these games or did they just pick what happened to be in their line of sight when they were browsing the shelves?

"Legendary"? Really?

The only part of this article that bothered me is this:

"Gears of War 2" – This game's main weapon is the Lancer assault rifle which combines a rifle with a chain saw.

I mean, what the hell? The game is about a group of humans fighting for what they believe in and protecting their land. How is that different than the war in Iraq? Or the countless movies about war and protecting America or whatever country you live in?

It's a story (albeit a weak one) about survival and concern for mankind. It may be bloody, it may be 'scary' but that's life and it's no different than real life stories.

The Gears are freakin' heroes in the story, not rampaging death machines hellbent on brainwashing your teenager into keying up your Audi and smoking your hidden stash of pot.

I don't understand how Far Cry 2 can be listed as such a violent game, while Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway is not.

In the demo of BIA alone, I managed to completely separate a man's upper body from his lower body using a grenade, and burst several heads like melons. As a matter of fact, the game SLOWS DOWN AND ZOOMS IN on the man as his head explodes.

Far Cry 2, on the other hand, seemed decidedly less gory, and certainly on par in terms of general "violence" than BIA and many other games.

this list is still retarded. Blitz II is the most violent? I find it hard to believe blowing heads off in fallout is more tame than that.

And how is far cry 2 above gow2? Far Cry has no limb severing, pools of blood or excessive gore. You can light people on fire though but you can also do that in GOW plus all the things mentioned above.

I'm a little upset GTA4 isn't on here. I think I'll go hop on and bash some little old lady's head in with a bat.

I also want to make a point about WHY she makes this list.

She's the Prosecutor for Detroit, Michigan. In case you didn't know, Detroit has been the murder capital of the world many times, and has frequently been in the top five most violent cities in the United States for decades. If you'd ever been there, you'd know that this woman- as Prosecutor- sees a lot of dead people, a lot of murder, and a lot of young people turning to violence.

She makes this list to let parents IN HER COMMUNITY know that these games simulate or glorify a violent lifestyle. If you ever lived in Detroit, you'd recognize that a lot of young men think that violence is the only way they'll get anywhere, or they glorify it in some way. They don't need any more influence in their life telling them that violence is the way to "make it", because these are the kinds of people who DO pick up behavior from video games, and they don't have parents who are educated on the rating system.

The current rate of violent crime in Detroit is 2,289 violent crimes per 100,000 population. To compare that for you, the violent crime rate in New York City is just 637.9 violent crimes per 100,000 population.

So yes-- Detroit parents ABSOLUTELY need this list. This isn't the Gestapo trying to stop responsible adults from having fun. This is a Detroit prosecutor who sees only a fraction of the one homicide per day (along with rape, assault, robbery, etc.) in this city. She knows violence. She knows a lot of the "have nots" in Detroit take their cues from movies, TV, games, and music, because the guys who turn to violence aren't that bright in the first place.

If anything, you guys should thank her. She's doing her best to keep these kinds of losers from having these games-- And they're the guys who will murder someone, and then blame it on Far Cry 2 or GTA IV, thus making life difficult for the rest of us gamers.

I'm not having any problems with her and this list. The list id up to date, mostly accurate although I might not agree on some of the descriptions and recommendation.

The report clearly states what it is, what it's trying to do and how it is doing so far. It' wags a sharp finger towards parents urging them to be more involved with what their children are playing etc.

I do not find it to be overzealous in any significant form apart from other similair reports I've seen. They could have advocated a small space for an actual gamer to add a comment to the report since it seems very biased as it is now and does not show the positive side of gaming.

In all I might not be totally happy about the report, but if anything is gonna be released to the uneducated (about games) masses then this one one of the best.
