A free patch for SingStar PS3, allowing non-backwards compatible PS3s to play PS2 SingStar titles, should be available now in Europe. The download will automatically activate when owners pop in their copy of the game, enabling those karaoke divas to swap PS2 SingStar discs in "for the rest of the session." The game is still technically playing the PS3 version and just pulling the data from the disc, so all DLC should still be available.

A nice idea. It'd be nicer if they took it a step further and provided the ability to download all PS2 SingStar games (eg. SingStar ABBA) onto your PS3 HDD via PSN, though. This means you'd only need a single disc to play every SingStar game.

This would mean relicensing. It was quite easy with Rock Band - only 1 CD. There's at least 30(!), probably more different Singstars including local (German, French, Spanish, Polish etc) variations etc, each with individual songs etc.

If they can patch some PS2 games to work on non-backwards compatible PS3s, why can't they patch them all?
For God's sake Sony, even the several hundred dollar cheaper Wii has bc! I still don't understand why they took it out. Luckily I have a 60gb PS3 with full bc.

Nowhere in the text does it say that you can play the PS2 game. The system only reads the game music files for use with the PS3 Singstar.
Your computer can do that to and it doesn't mean you can play your PS2 games on it, does it?
(In before emulation.)

This isn't a patch that makes the PS2 games work. It basically improves upon the disc swapping feature from the previous games, allowing you to access the content on the disc for use in the PS3 versions engine (which I assume it would cache to the HDD).
If the HDD has all the engine stuff on it, all that needs to be read of the PS2 disc is the music files and ones associated to that (for the lyrics and pitch, etc.).

I take the phrase "rest of the session" to mean it will work until you turn off your PS3 or end the game. Kind of like if you start out playing the PS2 80's disc (for example) and swap it for other PS2 SingStars. They all have the 80's fonts, graphics, etc. until you turn the game off and start with another disc.
