Four Konami games coming to iPhone, including Metal Gear, Silent Hill
And Dance Dance Revolution, if you can believe it. Konami has announced the impending arrival of four downloadable iPhone games, with all but one scheduled to arrive "from late December." The genres covered are "Music," "Action," "3D Shooting" and the slightly provocative "Touch Shooting." As for the corresponding titles:
- Dance Dance Revolution S Lite, "a music game where you tap the arrow icons that appear at the bottom of the screen in time with music."
- Silent Hill: The Escape, "a first-person 3D shooting game that lets players utilize the control features only found on the iPhone and iPod touch ..."
- Frogger, "a simple game" which probably doesn't require any further explanation.
- Metal Gear Solid Touch, "an original game that brings to life the world and characters" of MGS4. Eight "touch shooting" levels will be available in the initial release, with more to follow.

kacex @ Dec 17th 2008 4:35AM

Hyams @ Dec 17th 2008 5:35AM
And all the flak I took in I took for saying exactly that. Few agreed with me that it must mean a MGS game on the iPhone - everyone said it had to be one for the 360.
http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/05/rumor-kojima-productions-teases-a-next-metal-gear/
My favourite quote is from Vegeta: "Saying it'll be for the Iphone of all things is just down right silly."
Duke @ Dec 17th 2008 9:59AM
I gotta admit that while I haven't gotten too into games on the iPhone, I will grab a MG right away.
Miguel @ Dec 17th 2008 10:23AM
I knew it!
I will definitely get MGST for my iPhone! Maybe even Silent Hill and Frogger
Marty @ Dec 17th 2008 11:09AM
@Hyams - Just because you're right about it doesn't make it any less absurd.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Dec 17th 2008 11:17AM
Ok fine you're right. But going around every thread and making a big deal out of it as someone already said, "negates the awesomeness of your prediction."
The only reason why I thought the Iphone was silly not because I wanted it on the 360, but because it really doesn't makes sense as to why Konami would put out a popular franchise on a platform that really isn't known for its game. It would have made more senes to put it on the Wii or Dsi where you have a fanbase that would be more wiling to buy your product.
But whatever, I guess we'll see what will happen to those games.
J @ Dec 17th 2008 1:49PM
It's okay vegeta. we understood your reason. don't take hyams response personally. he's just responding to all the negative feedback he received.
so it should be even. ;)
except for the fact that you were DEAD WRONG!!!
which is too bad, since there were much bigger jackasses commenting in that article that need an "i told you so" much more.
MGS4 360 CONFIRMED!!!
Then again, we still don't know, do we.
KarlW @ Dec 17th 2008 4:51AM
iPhone Frogger! Yes!
eldee @ Dec 17th 2008 5:02AM
"solid touch".. it just sounds so dirty
Michelobius @ Dec 17th 2008 2:51PM
...Which is where the iPod Touch comes in. Same handheld gaming as on the iPhone, no monthly contract. Obviously the PSP and DS are more suited to gaming, but it's just silly to see people ignore a platform with over 1500 games available for it already.
Michelobius @ Dec 17th 2008 2:53PM
Dammit, that comment was meant in response to Marty's, one comment thread down.
Chase @ Dec 17th 2008 5:07AM
The iPhone is not a handheld gaming console.
I'll stick with my DS or PSP. kthxbi
Johnny! @ Dec 17th 2008 5:30AM
Well clearly it is, hence the story...
kthxbi
Duke @ Dec 17th 2008 9:49AM
..but it is a hand held device that you can play games on.
Get your head out of your ass and just accept the thing plays games. It won't hurt your precious consoles just by a phone having games on it.
Marty @ Dec 17th 2008 11:11AM
The problem is, the iPhone isn't attracting gamers like DS or PSP do. People don't buy iPhones to play games, and they aren't going to cancel their current phone service and get a new one just to play games either. That's why handhelds like DS and PSP still make sense, and are still relevant.
ill trooper @ Dec 17th 2008 6:05PM
You can still use your DS and PSP even if good games continue to come out for the iPhone/Touch platform.
What some people here (like Marty, once again) continue to do is look at the situation backwards, which is saying "people are never going to give up their DS to buy into a phone contract to play games" when actually the situation is this: people everywhere already own iPhones/have contracts, or own an iPod Touch, and want to play games. Those people may not want to buy or carry a DS or a PSP.
It's a new market to create games for, to sell to an audience that has shown it will buy apps, and needs more quality. There's great potential in the quality devs that are giving it a go - BandaiNamco, EA, now Konami, and the hundreds of indie devs that are making cool apps and games for the platform.
It's not a stretch to see there are a lot of people that would love to play some games on the go without carrying another device other than their iPhone.
CaramelZappa @ Dec 17th 2008 5:20AM
I keep on trying to come up with controls for the iphone that seam reasonable but any console with real buttons always shoots it down.
For a first person shooter, I think it would be nice to have a small touch area on the bottom corners of the screen, one for each thumb, to work similar to duel analogs, a lot like the DS handles FPS's. But here's the problem, what do you do to fire, have another touch button next to the left analog touchpad? You start using screen real estate for the actual game pretty quickly, and all without the nice tactile feel of buttons. I'll stick with my DS.
CaramelZappa @ Dec 17th 2008 5:24AM
And don't tell me you just press on the screen where you want to shoot, not only does that take away from the aiming aspect of a first person shooter, but it also leaves the problem of your thumb/hand covering too much of the screen.
The duel touchpads would work pretty well for geometry wars, though.
Levi @ Dec 17th 2008 12:30PM
brothers in arms is a third person shooter for iPhone. It has two control schemes. One is how you described, with two virtual analogues. The other has one for movement and you use the screen for looking around.
The game sucks.
Hyams @ Dec 17th 2008 5:30AM
Hah, I was *100%* spot on.
Never doubt me again, bitches. ^_^
Hyams @ Dec 17th 2008 5:47AM
Actually, I wasn’t quite 100%. I thought it was about a Metal Gear Ac!d game, not a Metal Gear Solid one. Still, I came close.
And now, because I’m a pretentious douche, here’s some of my favourite replies I got when I argued that the symbols meant that the next Metal Gear would be the for the iPhone:
Comet: “I cant see it being teased if its something that trival.”
Madatoman: “Except... no.
You are clearly writing off the significance of the xbox symbol. It's a far more recognizable and significant part of the equation than the i or the !
And it doesn't mean "it's on"
That's just stupid.”
Marty: “Come on now Hyams - you keep yourself in check most of the time, but you're pretty obviously a PS3 fanboy. We know it eats you up inside.”
Snowblind: “Hyams - you do sound like you're a little in denail.”
^_^
Soop @ Dec 17th 2008 5:51AM
Heheh, Yeah, me too, and I thought it would be for the DSi. But I did get MGST = Metal gear solid touch :D
Closer than the people who started bawling about a goddamn 360 release.
Lawrence @ Dec 17th 2008 7:15AM
You did have the most reasonable argument at the time. It wasn't just "OMG IZ GREEN! 360 4 SHURE!", it was more detailed and well-thought out.
Besides, anyone who thinks a lower case i has more in common with a brand new hardware version of a handheld console than a well established series of devices that all conform to the same general naming convention is retarded.
It's like thinking someone will only say their games came out for the GameBoy Advance SP, it's still a damned GBA in the end!
ryan @ Dec 17th 2008 8:08AM
LOL,I totally forgot I replied to you with this quote about the text color:
"^
Maybe it just means MGS4 for the 360 Elite only. Time to upgrade that hard drive guys, your mandatory installs have finally arrived to 360.
I kid, I kid. But I seriously have no clue what the heck this means. That Kojima, always trying to make my day."
But yeah, congrats on the prediction man! :D
Vcize @ Dec 17th 2008 10:10AM
Even though I agreed with you in that thread (I also thought MG:Ac!d on the touch), I will say that bragging about it here TWICE pretty much negates any awesomeness gained in predicting it correctly in the first place.
Marty @ Dec 17th 2008 11:13AM
I'm too busy trying to decide to what degree I don't give a shit, Hyams. Completely or absolutely?
Levi @ Dec 17th 2008 12:37PM
feels good to be right doesn't it. Anyone who puts you down for quoting everyone who put down your predictions are just sore losers. When you are right among a bunch of idiots who refuse to admit they are wrong, you gotta say "I told you so."
Job well done, you won the internet. Now, you must collect all the trophies and achievements..
J @ Dec 17th 2008 1:56PM
You'd be less busy, marty, if you'd just admit to what degree it BUUUUUUUUURNS.
Marty @ Dec 17th 2008 2:12PM
Hey, I'm not disappointed in the slightest. I have no interest in the MGS series - and if you read the rest of my posts from that thread, you'd see that I did not firmly believe that the announcement was for a 360 version of the game.
I just think we should recognize Hyams for what he is, and that's what that comment was about. It's pathetic that he took the time to go back and pull peoples' comments out like this - I wouldn't have wasted my time on something so unimportant, and I doubt any of the other people in that thread would either.
I guess if that's how you want to spend your time, though...
J @ Dec 17th 2008 2:39PM
Marty,
I'm having a hard time believing you don't completely absolutely give a shit.
J @ Dec 17th 2008 2:45PM
Hyams, you really fucked their egos.
Vegeta and Marty are licking each other's wounds on the next page, and upvoting themselves.
Hyams @ Dec 17th 2008 4:27PM
Oh, c'mon Marty, what's the point of being right if you can't gloat about it later? ^_^
Link408 @ Dec 17th 2008 5:32AM
it could be an on-rail shooter
indigit4l @ Dec 17th 2008 5:33AM
That green font was shenanigans!
Emophia @ Dec 17th 2008 7:29AM
Green =/= xbox 360.
Green = go/ready etc.
John Z @ Dec 17th 2008 5:37AM
A few days ago I would have said that the iPhone can't do an engaging game, and that this wasn't good news... But then I came across "Space Deadbeef", a free side-scrolling shooter. It's pretty damn fun, and it controls very well. It took time, but there's some good games coming out for the iPhone.
Note that I still don't see it primarily as a gaming device. That's just silly. But if there's good software, the notion of games on the device isn't that ridiculous (and it would help lessen the frustration those times when I'm stuck in a line or something and have forgotten my DS or a book). If Metal Gear turns out okay, then it'll be good to have as a "backup".
I hold no hope whatsoever for DDR on the iPhone, however.
ill trooper @ Dec 17th 2008 6:07PM
Another weird free game worth checking is 'Trace,' a platform game that you draw your own platforms in to solve the levels.
BxGT @ Dec 17th 2008 6:05AM
Wow.........thank you konami for wasting my fucking time on a cell phone game.
=Curve= @ Dec 17th 2008 6:59AM
Kojima really knows how to rile up the fanboys.
Well played sir, well played. *slow clap*
Comet @ Dec 17th 2008 7:21AM
Retarded. I love mgs but cellphone games are shit.
ae86takumi @ Dec 17th 2008 7:46AM
I guess it's time to get an iPhone again. I need more Metal Gear. =)
Premature ejaculation man @ Dec 17th 2008 7:46AM
ehhhh...Can't imagine it'd be very good.
Has the PSP gotten a remake of MGS1? If not, there should be and I'll buy one.
LordVesper007 @ Dec 17th 2008 7:55AM
I mean how exactly is this going to work? Control wise?
And can you place this on an iPod Touch?
Last but not least is Apple really trying to push the iPhone as a handheld GAMING device? Sorry but I'll never see it as that. IF Apple wants to get into that arena they're gonna have to come up with something new and original as opposed to their current love fest with touchscreens.
I mean a real handheld is gonna have to have some buttons up on their somewhere.
And Konami you are such a fucking tease....but I love it!
Duke @ Dec 17th 2008 9:56AM
I don't understand how simple and obvious ideas get twisted around here. Are they trying to make it a gaming device? You do see it plays games right? It has a library of games on itunes now right? So yes, its a device they can sell games for and so they want to. They don't need to change their love affair with touch or anything else as its the phone that is central and the gaming or other apps that are secondary.
Why you all insist on acting like apple is killing gaming or trying to act like they have the next DS is beyond me. They, like everyone else, have made a phone that has gaming ability. Yet their phone has much better graphics and more power than the others have generally had. So stop getting your panties in a bunch because you want to believe they are taking aim at the DS and PSP - thats not their target. They are fully utilizing the phones potential, and they shouldn't stop doing that because you don't like them on that turf.
Vcize @ Dec 17th 2008 10:13AM
Well, to be fair Duke, I think it's pretty clear that they ARE in fact targeting the DS/PSP with their lines about the iPhone being the "best handheld gaming device". Not phone. Device.
At least I think they said that. Maybe it was just a blogger or something though..
Duke @ Dec 17th 2008 10:33AM
I don't recall them saying it was the best gaming device. That would be a strange thing for them to claim. If they did, then that was dumb.
Vcize @ Dec 17th 2008 10:43AM
Duke,
http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/09/new-apple-ad-touts-ipod-touch-as-best-portable-device-for-gamin/
Duke @ Dec 17th 2008 11:27AM
Oh yeah, I totally forgot about that one. So yeah, that was pretty stupid of them to say.
kingvelez2 @ Dec 17th 2008 8:27AM
iPhone games work on iPod Touch, they are basically the same.
