Well 7.8s and 7.7s really isn't that bad... you guys have to remember...

10 is perfect (even though it's being handed out like candy)
9 is freaking mindblowingly awesome getting close to perfection.
8. Is a really standard game with only a few minor flaws.
7. Is a pretty good game. Has some issues, but overall a solid title.
6. Ok... for fans of the series but not going to make people jump genres.
5. Umm... pretty bad. Major issues and needs reworking
4. Fairly broken, tons of issues, not recommended.
3. don't buy, don't rent, send them an angry letter.
2. Don't bother reading the review. Please just spare time.
1. If you buy this game you are one crazy freakin masochist.

That's how review sites do this... So what we have here is a reportedly Solid title that's fairly good (upper 7s) that could have used some improvements (thankfully patches means we don't have to wait for the sequel to see benefits)

So what's with all the controversy? It doesn't mean it's a bad game. It's a different story if this was a different game. I was pissed about the Disgaea series being rated 7.5 but that's because Gamespot rated the other games in the 8s, called Disgaea 3 best in series, and dropped the rating because they are graphics whores and retro sprites are no longer acceptable to them. *Sigh* The reviews could be worse...

They could be like Infinite Undiscovery and Last Remnant which are getting some 6 averages instead. Some companies just have a bad opinion on some games. Just be glad Gamespot.com wasn't the first reviewer, I disagree with them more than almost any other company.

While I generally don't put much stock in Famitsu reviews, either, 29/40 on a game that they themselves have hyped up doesn't bode well. By all my usual measures of how they score (hype+ads), it should have been more like a 33+.

Actually I think they were more impressed with Haze because of its story-oriented approach to FPS which isn't so common in the genre. But yeah that game definitely did not live up to the hype.

Meh, Famitsu is all over the place with their reviews. I'll wait to see what Edge has to say. Bummer either way, I've been looking forward to this game since it was announced.

Yep, I said Edge.

I'm not saying I agree with them 100%. Hardly (10/10 for Halo 3? Only 8/10 for MGS4? Screw that!). But they're generally the tougher of the critics, and I've yet to see much fanboyism in their reviews. The points they raise, and the issues they bring up, seem to be well rounded and fairly weighted. If they rate a game 7/10, it's usually a score I can bank on.

I don't care what anyone says I liked HAZE. Co-op was very fun & online shined like Rainbow 6 Vegas for me. Lots of unique elements but generic as hell to. WNK will indeed get scores from 7.5-8.5 once it arrives here as I predict. It will be okay. I might get it, but i'm also waiting for the PS3 version of TLR as i expect it to be polished since SE failed the 360 version. anyways it wouldn't surprise me if the following reviews turn out as such.

I think this game will end up a lot like Valkyria Chronicles...critical acclaim in the States with very poor sales numbers. I picked up VC and really liked it, so I imagine I'll buy WKC too.

To be honest with you, Famitsu's score is far from bad. 7-8 on each category would be good on IGN. So it has the potential to be really great based on margin of error.

I don't see why Famitsu's reviews are taken so seriously in Japan. I don't understand Japanese but I don't trust a reviewer who only right a tiny little paragraph and pass it off as a game review.

Famitsu scores are weird indeed.

lolNintendogs scored 40/40. Vagrant Story, which is a good game, but not "OMGWTF" got 40/40, and so did FFXII. didn't they give The Last Remnant a 36 or something? And the game is plagued by so many problems...

Just like someone else pointed, my opinions too are the opposite of Famitsu's. So I guess it'll be a great game

It is rare they score an RPG low. They gave Blue Dragon a very high score and that game is awful. I'm a little worried now.

They've given fallout 3, fable 2, and the original pokemon and monster hunters low scores.

They hate western rpgs and they don't like games that diverge from convention until after they get popular.

WNC is Level 5's attempt to introduce western elements into the stale JRPG genre, and if it diverges from conventions all the better.

@deaftly

The only thing even halfway decent about Lost Odyssey were the dream sequences. Otherwise it was an over-rated, also-ran piece of crap.

Tales of Vesperia was blast, though.

@Deaftroll: Lost Odyssey got a Metacritic score of 78 and ToV squeaked in an 81. Both look like they earned a solid "meh" score to me.

The last RPG I played and loved was FFXII on the PS2 and the reviewers agree with me, MC score of 92.

wow, that sucks... might have to skip over this one and replay persona 3 instead... fes version.

it sucks that dev costs are so high... i would really love to see a persona game on any next gen system. hell, throw it on the wii if they have to. i just want more persona! lol.

i'm hoping wkc is actually better than what famitsu says though. it's kinda disheartening especially coming from level 5.

Famitsu is rarely off, but 7s and 8s aren't bad for a game. Some of my favorite games have gotten those scores from most reviewers and it doesn't mean its not a great game. The industry is so subjective, just like movie reviewers, that its hard to get a score that can say everything and be impartial or universally correct.

keep in mind that famitsu generally seems to have an extremely outdated [read: traditional] perspective on what makes a good or bad RPG. most truly innovative or progressive games that come out in any genre is going to get bad marks from famitsu for not falling in line and being just like everything else.

but overall i agree with everyone else's comments. their scores are pretty polarized from what the average gamer thinks about games. im even seeing a lot of oddities with their scores versus japanese sales charts too. the "bad" stuff selling decently and the "awesome" stuff sitting on shelves.

these things, of course, will not keep those that seek to humiliate and spin any ps3 news into the negative direction from plastering this score everywhere and citing how they think famitsu scores are spot on. *sigh*

rofl, Is this the medieval version of J-anime mecha? I'm still waiting for some selling point of sorts for those uninspired super sentai-esque looking mystical battle armors.

And the character design of the main characters is also rather drab. Still, the gameplay, story & action could salvage the project from the familiar trappings of J-mediocrity.

Here's the weirdest part. Do any of you remember Mobile Suit Gundam Crossfire? Yeah, it was that bad right even the review in North America said it's bad. Well in Japan, Famitsu gave the game a very good rating!!! After I saw Famitsu giving WKC a low rating, I started to wonder if this company should not be trusted.

I thought Level 5 said the game would last 50 hours. So what happened to the other 20?

I still hope this does well because Level 5 has said if the game sells well they might allow Sony to buy them out and I think that would be good news if true. Because L5 makes great games and then you know the PS3 and PSP would have great RPGs.

Ouch. I actually started getting "suspicious" of White Knight Chronicles in recent weeks/months, thinking that it might not actually be all that the fans are hyping it up to be.

Unfortunately Famitsu has kind of confirmed that. =/

Too bad... I guess it really is kind of an average game. =/

My Take:

Ok hey look all the complaints Famitsu listed where just technical elements. If you really think about it those stuff can be fixed with DLC.

As for the game itself - they were overall impressed with "EPIC BATTLES, CUSTOMIZABLE COMBOS AND A GORGEOUS LOOK WORLD" - that's a game right there. It might be frustrating to handle it - but hey it's a good solid game in my opinion.

I actually trust Famitsu completely. I believe Haze was impressive to them considering there aren't too many FPS games in Japan and also because of the somewhat interesting storyline. However the problem with the storyline - was how the developers in the beginning told us that "OH you'll end up on the other side"

DAMN it that was a major twist!!!! Why'd you reveal such a thing? God...

When I saw the title I was expecting a minimum of 36/40 rate... I'm very unhappy with this. Pff, I don't think I will spend my money in a game like this, even if MakaiOokami could be right. I wanna see a in-game session, then I decide if I gotta change my mind or not...
