I did it, but it's mostly been sitting there ever since. The DVD app was less than expected, so it hasn't gotten much use.

Waiting on that must-have import, but Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is probably going to achieve that status soon enough...

I have the Homebrew channel, but I haven't used yet, the DVD aplication doesn't work on my Wii :S, and still haven't import any games..... if Capcom doesn't manage to bring Tatsunoko vs Capcom to the US, maybe I import it, and perhaps the lestest Naruto Gekitou Ninja Taisen EX game, may be on my import list.

I use it constantly. Mostly to play custom stages in SSBBrawl online with my buddy. You can also create wicked stages with overlapping parts and all sorts of other goodies.
Secondly, I use it to load the emulators for all of the SNES/NES/Genesis games. It sure beats waiting and paying for VC Games when you have almost every game in existence on one stupid DVD.

What homebrew app do you use to play/create Brawl stages? I've searched on wiibrew.org and didn't see anything related to Brawl.

Gamma is a program that allows you to play burned games and movies on your Wii. I don't have it. It's one of the reasons that Homebrew gets a bad rap.

On the other hand, has anyone else played the Tyrian port through the Homebrew channel. Man that game is still awesome 12 years later.

It better known as Bakcup Launcher 0.3 Gamma (it has gone over aplha and beta so its gamma now)

And I had use it, mostly to test games, play imports. right now i'm playing Tatsunoko vs Capcom, cuz my import hasn't arrived yet.

And yes, i have downloaded many Wiigames, but only played for an hour or so to see if they are worth of buying. Purchased Quantum, COD:WAW, tales of symphonia and excite truck after testing those, and also imported Disaster and waiting for Tatsunoko to arrive. Decided to buy Tomb raider on the PS3 (the Wii version didn't brought anything special, and i'm going for the eye candy here)

I hate to say it, but Homebrew is one thing Microsoft got right by allowing people to make and share Homebrew games legitimately.

On the Wii, DS, and PSP, "Homebrew" has become a euphemism for pirating and emulating commercial games. The true spirit of "Homebrew" is amateurs creating their own games, and that's what people do on the 360's Creators Club.

Depends on the circles you hang out in. Go to gbatemp, yeah, it's all about the "backups" (read: piracy) there. Go to wiibrew.org, and it's a totally different story.

Not to sound like a hater, but at the rate games I'm interested in for the Wii come out, I can afford to buy them all.

I homebrew all the time on my Wii. Particularly love the DVD player since it plays discs from any region. Also love the fact that I can stream media to it from my network drive.

Wii Homebrew has replaced my PS3 as my media player in the living room. :D

I know it was posted how to install this a while ago, but I can't find it.. also, didn't nintendo, with their last update, make the homebrew channel not work?

Anywho, since the freeloader disk doesnt work anymore, and I really wish I could play my Gundam games again, does anyone have a link to that article on this site that told you how to install it easily for people who have never really done that sort of thing?

Just as a side note. Do you think Nintendo would ever "brick" Wii's that have this installed similar to Sony with their PSP and unlocked Apple iPhones?

Thanks

Dude, check http://www.wiibrew.org. They have extensive lists of what updates do what.

Nintendo will never issue an update that bricks a console with Homebrew on it. However, they will keep trying to plug the holes. Menu 3.4 (latest update) does NOT disable the homebrew channel if you already have it installed. It also removes all known versions of the Twilight hack, so if you don't have it installed yet, it's harder, but wiibrew has instructions on how to install on 3.4. 3.4 will also stop DVDx (and thus Backup Channel) and patchmii - thus stopping imports, DVD playback, and playing *cough* backed-up *cough* games. It also changes the wording of the license such that Nintendo is now allowed to push updates to your console whenever it is connected - pre 3.4 you had to choose to update.

Don't have Homebrew installed, and don't plan to (at the moment).

The best homebrew applications I've seen so far are:

(1) backup/restore utilities, although moving data between Gamecube memory cards and the SD card is the only one that really interests me.

(2) DVD playback, although why bother when I've already got a dedicated DVD player that does an excellent job?

(3) region unlock utilities, although there aren't any import games that look worth the effort for me.

Emulation -- especially for SCUMMVM to play old LucasArts point-and-click adventure games -- is tempting, but I'm not willing to cross that legal (and moral) boundary when there is more than enough gaming goodness already available.

The first thing I used it for was for emulators. Played a bunch of Super Dodge Ball before it was released for VC. Second thing was the good ol' Backup Channel - which I haven't actually played, just burned a game and tested. DVD playback is useless to me, as I already have a DVD player.

The only thing I really use homebrew for is playing Divx movies on the Wii. Works great!

Also, I had fun with the 2D Portal game that someone created.

I don't see the point of playing DVDs on the Wii, I haven't yet imported games, I don't cheat on games, and I don't really want to run the emulators. I'd rather support the VC.

I use it mostly for Mplayer on the Wii. The latest versions can play either straight off the SD card, a connected USB drive, over the network, or off of a burnt DVD. Works great when I can bring it over to the GF's place, where she doesn't have a TV-out on her computer, so we watch movies on the TV through the Wii.

I agree. If you like the system you should help it grow by supporting the teams who develop for it.

If you don't have the cash then you could at least shop around for game deals. Blockbuster is selling new Mario Galaxy copies for $25. Gamestop has Okami for $25. Plenty of great games for cheap on the Wii.

Shame on you for stealing.

I also run backups, but only for testing, if I like the game, I buy em, specially cuz many cut scenes are pretty slow, cuz the loaders can only read at 3x while the normal speed is 6x.

Man, hadn't touched that judgement game since I tested, and I mourn that wasted dvd, same goes for Baja1000

I use Wii homebrew often, and Homebrew Browser is a great way to check, although it somewhat lags behind announced updates.

I'd like to see more Wii-specific games rather than ports (although ports of some DS homebrew games would be nice).

Of all things, my daughter loves playing the Tic-Tac-Toe game. :)

I have the Homebrew Channel installed.

The thing that has me right now is Powder running on the GBA emu. I also like the Flashback (Reminiscence) port. I wish I had the right version of Out of This World (Another World) so I could play it too.

WiiQuake, Wiiero, Tyrian, Mahjong Wii are all great games as well.

I also use Mplayer to play videos that I have saved in Mp4 format on my Wii. You can watch most of the downloadable videos from Gametrailers on the Wii. FF Retrospective anyone?

I don't use it for DVDs tho, because I don't like that the fan never spins during DVD playback. My Wii got toasty. Besides, I have an upconverting DVD player for that.

I don't use it for backups either. Until I read this post I didn't even know the name of the program that let you do that.

I knew the program existed, I read about it here on WiiFanboy. It's that playing copies doesn't interest me so I never went any further into it than that.

The Wii has precious few great games compared to the mound of garbage titles out there. If a game is worth playing then IMO it's worth buying.

@ Sisyphus oh please Emulators for Nintendo Consoles NES/SNES have been about since mid 90's why waste money on VC for something that has been around for 10yrs,. Nintendo only created VC cuz they saw the popularity of Emulators and wanted to cash in.

I pirate PSP games and have 2 R4 for each of my kids DS lites also, and I pirate movies and porn ,. yes i'm a HardCore Digital Pirate.

As I have stated above me, I also use homebrew, main reason are this

1.- Original games: WiiQuake and WiiDoom are pretty awesome, gave fresh air to the games!!! Portii, o man, i laughed hard with the comments. WiiPhysics and WiiDraw are pretty neat too!!!
2.- Bakcups: I play backups, but mostly for reference on buying new games and imports. I play em for 1 hour or two, then i decide if I buy em or no.
*Games I have bought after testing*
Spiderman web of shadows
Quantum
COD: WAW
Disaster
Tatsunoko vs Capcom
Tomb Raider Underworld (but here, i went for the PS3 version, eye candy, sorry guys)
Excite truck (man, never though game would be so awesome!!!!)
Tales of Phantasya
SkyCrawlers: Innocent Aces (waiting for import togheter with Tatsunoko)
FaceBreaker KO Party
Alone in the Dark (I liked, ok!)
Driver Parallel Lines

*Games waiting for their localization that I liked*
Tenchu 4
Oneechanbara R (Bikini Zombie slayer)
Rune Factory

*Games I didn't liked and wasted a DVD on em*
Rygar: Battle for Argus (Really a shame, the game had potential, but Tecmo didn't knew how to use it)
Baja1000 (Excite Truck and motorstorm 1000 times better)
Catelvania Judgement (they pulled a soul calibur legends here)

3.- Emulators
4.- Development: I hope to release something solid anytime soon. Been struggling to bring Panda3D over to the Wii
5.- Media Playing: Cuz Wii media players have a wider range of codecs than PS3
6.- Custom Firmware: Customming the Wii will be awesome, kinda bored of its actual look

I use it for emulators (mainly because I play translated SNES games, or patched to increase difficulty, or they aren't on the VC) also I'll play TvsC thanks to the loader. And Rune factory frontier if they screw the localization with bad voice acting (or I could make a backup and then undub it, another use for backups (I will buy the game though, that's for sure)).

I agree with CJ, backups are useful for trying games, or for playing short games that aren't worth a buy, I always buy the games that I really like (and there are a lot of them).

I use homebrew more than I do actual Wii Games.

FTPii is great for transferring data from my PC onto my SD card, since I don't have an SD reader.

Homebrew Browser is great for downloading the latest homebrew directly from the Wii.

I haven't played the emulators too much, but the SNES emulator is awesome.

Still waiting for a homebrew app that will properly copy GameCube saves to the SD card (from Official Nintendo Memory Cards) so I can copy my Animal Crossing data to my main GCN Memory card and give my older (smaller) cards to my brother-in-law, who I already gave my GCN to.

Sadly, to my knowledge there aren't many original homebrew games that are worth it right now, though my wife loves spending hours playing the Mahjongg homebrew game.

Unfortunately, since 3.3b, homebrew cannot run your "legal backups." And I believe WiiKey is unsafe and can brick consoles (like it can ACTUALLY brick it - not just propaganda by Nintendo)
