3D Realms unwraps new Duke Nukem Forever image

Perhaps worse than not getting the gift you've asked for is getting a raincheck for it. Although we appreciate the sentiment behind 3D Realms releasing a new image containing in-game creatures from Duke Nukem Forever, the fact that another holiday season has come (and almost gone) without the game actually being released can't be ignored.

Still, if you'd like to have a reminder of promises unfulfilled staring back at you every time you look at your monitor, the 3D Realms site has the image in all shapes and sizes. Us, we'll pass ... and celebrate the holidays the good old fashioned way.

Not really. I think that whatever you see in a video game will most likely look somewhat familiar because its so difficult to come up with something completely original. That said, don't get mean wrong, they look like vile monsters that I wouldn't want to mess with, but they don't look like the demon spawn of Gears 2 and Resistance 2. They look like they belong in a Duke Nukem game.

To be honest the monsters and story don't really matter for a DN game.
They just need awesomely interactive levels, and fun OTT weapons.

I thought the old videos looked cool.. particularly when you could get into the F15 and blow the crap out of everything. Shame they didn't just release it...

xorn, I've played all the Dukes back to the first 2D game on my 386. Yes, these are updated Duke 3d chars and they don't look too shabby from this one measly image we have. I do like how the floating tentacle dude is in there. That said...it totally looks like they hired Epic's art design team to update the characters. They need to be a little more original.

If you played all of them you should know its an OCTOBRAIN.

If this game were released tomorrow, without any advertisement or hype, I'd rush right out and drop $60 on it.

I just want them to release it cause I know its gonna be really good. And considering how much sex, violence and gore is in games nowadays, I know 3D Realms is going to work really hard to make Duke stand out.

When will developers realize that onerous amounts of HDR is not the future of gaming?

I guess they could always take a page from the Gears2 book and just bump map the ever-loving shit out of everything on the screen.

Do you know what HDR is? Because it's kind of you know... impossible to see in a screenshot. Maybe you mean bloom? Even so there isn't much at all.

I've said it before: Duke Nukem Forever may have once been real, but it no longer exists. It is now a hoax.

I'm sure all the people on the development team who've been working for 10 years on the game agree with you. A whole decade of their lives wasted just to not release a game and to keep gamers guessing.

It's only taken so long because they keep changing game engines. The last video trailer they had showed in-game footage so it has to be getting close. :P

To me level design was a big reason why I liked duke nukem 3D.. I hope they don't try to mimic modern shooters to much and loose the classic feel.

...also would it hurt to add a little colour to the enemies? Cant somebody defeat this horde of grey villains once and for all? They just wont go away!

Looks like a fake ass gears of war. They will catch Osama before this game comes out. It will probably suck just like Too Human, 10 years of development doesn't make a good game!!

Why wouldn't 10 years of development not make a good game? So much testing and gameplay modifications and balance must have gone on. This game is going to rock. And if you weren't 12 you'd probably has played Duke Nukem 3D and if you had, you'd know ALL those creatures are HD versions of original Duke Nukem enemies. Gears ripped off Duke if anything.

I played duke since it was 2D on my windows 3.1 workstation... don't tell me about duke nukem son. Game mechanics originally wrote up for a ps1 doesn't = a good game in 2008.

Commenting seems a little hosed.. anyway.

Second: I wasn't referring to the creatures themselves, i'm referring to the overall graphical style when i say it "Looks like a fake ass gears of war".

Third: Just because a game's been in development for a long time DOES NOT mean it's going to be a good game, in no way shape or form. Sorry to burst your bubble.

It does feel awkward. Like a production shot of somebody's demo reel.

The third screenie with the hand and gun in the frame makes me laugh. "Yes it is a FPS and this is the proof!"...yeah, not really. Show some gameplay please.

The models look nice but it's very easy to shove them into a scene and take a screenshot. What will be more interesting is to see actual gameplay footage showing them in motion, the physics, the effects etc.

Can't effin wait.

But I'll have to.

I think I'll be a little sad if They ever release it. I mean this is like the night before Christmas - indefinitely.

Man, i look all those comments, how this monster seems like spawns from GoW and Resistance 2 monsters, and I can see they were little kids who never played the original games, hence they wouldn't know that actually, most of today enemies are based on those old games enemies. And this are only HD rehashed versions of those old enemies

Oh, forgot to mention that flying octopus, but then again, he is pretty well known and nowhere to find a replicated version of it, so hence i don't see a problem on recognizing him

Call me crazy, but I'm really excited for this game! I think 2009 is the year! We are getting more and more screenshots and vids. We might see them at E3 and if that happens, then we'll see just how far along the game is!
Of course, that's all just my optimism speaking.

Duke Nukem Forever will be the greatest game ever made, period. I can't think of too many games that even reached the greatness that Duke Nukem 3D attained.

Take your time 3D Realms... Don't be rushed by ignorant kids who don't even know the greatness that is the Duke (the real Duke, not that old cowboy fella.).
