Metallica debuts Guitar Hero: Metallica trailer

So what if the Metallica edition of Guitar Hero still hasn't been officially announced? The band itself has been talking about it all willy-nilly; it's been in Game Informer; there was even a teaser in Guitar Hero World Tour. And now ... well, the trailer is out. Not from its publisher, Activision, but on the band's website.
Perhaps some fine print in the band's contract stipulates that it gets to handle the PR for the game. Perhaps the mere mention of the game is being considered an "exclusive," since it's "unannounced." Perhaps it's time for a press release already.
[Thanks, Brett]

...why?
T @ Dec 19th 2008 3:57PM
Seriously?
1) GHWT's full band gameplay leaves much to be desired. The inability to bail out fellow band members...and no form of no fail most prominent. (And yes, I'm assuming that GHM is built on the WT engine.
2) How much you wanna bet that this won't support any existing GH DLC? Which will be incredibly confusing when somehow Death Magnetic works but nothing else does.
3) GHA got real boring real fast for being way too much from a single artist. Even if there's 20 "guest acts", I'm inevitably going to want to go back to my "base game" (GHWT in this case) and play my DLC.
4) They JUST released a brand new full band game...and are attempting to give it credibility by release weekly DLC. So how do they think supporters? By punching them in the gut with a buttload of songs that I'm going to go ahead and guess would make for some awesome DLC (Metallica, Slayer, Queen, Foo Fighters?)
And that last one to me is the worst offense. How does Activision expect me to show any loyalty to their brand when they don't even appear eager to focus on supporting their current product? (GHM was annouced in World Tour for CHRISAKES!)
offday @ Dec 19th 2008 4:06PM
Agreed. I think this is my cue to stop playing Guitar Hero and switch over to Rock Band.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Dec 19th 2008 4:15PM
Is true for example they announced the sequel to GH:DS just a week after the release of the first one and it was released the same year.
Then again GH2 teach me that Guitar games aren’t my thing.GH2 was fun to play but after I finished Medium I never felt like playing on hard, although I did play it on hard it requires to much practice to get a song right to the point that for the time I wasted trying to get 5 stars on “Sweet Child O’ Mine” in hard I could’ve been playing something else also that I learned that I rather listen to the full track after repeating the intro in practice 10 times.
I wish to support Rock Band because it seems is a better game but is going to arrive so late here than I don’t think I will ever give a damn about it.
GH milks every player out there,Rock Band 2 is never going to show up to the party and the repetition of both game sis undeniable so I guess I’ll keep playing Audiosurf
Tiptup300 @ Dec 20th 2008 12:09AM
Wow, neversoft still hasn't shook off the uncanny valley of GH. Guitar Hero One, two, three, world tour, and Aerosmith all suffered from the robot effect. Why can't they fix it!? Rock band looks like a band who's having a blast. Guitar hero looks like a bunch of machines imitating humanity.
Markez (Anti-Panda Death Murder Squadron) @ Dec 20th 2008 2:23AM
How about because Metallica absolutely blows ass?
Haggard @ Dec 20th 2008 1:15PM
In their first four albums, Metallica's complexity, musical composition and their general sound was absolutely fantastic. Sure, they suck now, but I would easily drop £35 on a chance to play through all their stuff on my RB instruments. I'd pay more for the inevitable Metallica-branded guitar controller that will likely be available too.
nickels @ Dec 19th 2008 3:33PM
it is official?
Metallica . . . Guitar Hero . . . It's Official! Yes, we know, it's the worst kept secret in rock-n-roll but we're here now to finally confirm that there will indeed be an all-Metallica Guitar Hero game released in the first half (!?) of 2009. Guitar Hero Metallica allows you to play as us in either single instrument or band career game modes in your choice of some famous settings (Tushino Airfield anyone?) or new venues with in the round staging. Included are 28 Metallica songs along with a few from some of our buddies like as Alice in Chains, the Foo Fighters, Slayer, Machine Head and Queen. There is also an all new Expert+ difficulty setting featuring two bass drum kick pedals (!!!) along with all the gameplay modes from Guitar Hero World Tour.
T @ Dec 19th 2008 3:49PM
Wait...that doesn't sound right. Only 28 songs from Metallica? That would mean the tracklist would only be like 50 songs total (Assuming 20 guest acts are one song each)

"Over 20 Guest acts".
Do not want.
I hope they don't screw this like Guitar Hero Aerosmith in which they only included a handful of the good Aerosmith tracks (In b4 Aerosmith is teh suxxors) and a bunch of songs that personally didn't like. Also that the demo already included the ones I wanted to play anyway.
Now that I hope the non-Metallica songs are at least from the metal genera (I’m sure they will fit Pat Benatar in there somehow) and please include”Enter Sandman”

And we're Milkin' Milkin' Milkin'... Milkin' Milkin' Milkin' HI-HOOOOO!

I wasn't sure about this one, but then Ecstasy of Gold started playing on the trailer and I was like DARNIT!

Can I play as Cliff Burton? If not then F**K off!
baby sea tuna @ Dec 19th 2008 4:08PM
You can...but only for the first couple of songs.
Kizzle @ Dec 19th 2008 5:35PM
Ha!
Unwinnable mini-game:
"Tap B repeatedly to raise bus with tow truck!"
Rootbeer @ Dec 19th 2008 5:35PM
Holy Christ, I just realized that Metallica existed for only four years with Cliff, and has now existed for twenty-two years without him.
And his presence is still sorely missed.
Deck @ Dec 19th 2008 3:56PM
Ridiculous.
They should just release the tracks as DLC. There is no good reason except milking the game for more money (go Acti go!) to put out a new GH. *sigh*
Slaziman @ Dec 19th 2008 3:59PM
Yes there is, they can make the presentation Metallica centric. If they wanted that in World Tour, it'd have to be a pretty damn big mod.
Slaziman @ Dec 19th 2008 3:58PM
Am I the only one thinking this game isn't that bad?
It's not like you HAVE to buy it, I might get it when it's like 20 dollars. Do we even know if this game will be full price?
baby sea tuna @ Dec 19th 2008 4:09PM
Why would you think this *wouldn't* be full price?
Slaziman @ Dec 19th 2008 4:21PM
Because it has less tracks than GH:WT I guess.
Mike T. @ Dec 19th 2008 5:04PM
Not only will it likely be full price, but they'll probably also put a version out with a guitar bundled in, too.
So that would put how many Activision GH SKUs on the market?
GH3 (disc-only)
GH3 (guitar bundle)
GHWT (disc)
GHWT (guitar bundle)
GHWT (full band bundle)
GH:A (disc)
GH:A (guitar bundle)
GH:OT
GH:OTD
GH:M (disc)
GH:M (guitar bundle...presumably)
And all of these in, what? 18 months of their owning the franchise? Pretty sure that cash tit is being squeezed til it's purple. Any way you slice it, that's fucking NUTS.

I'm gonna download this game off Napster.
oolz @ Dec 19th 2008 4:06PM
I love a good portion of Metallicas music, but there's no way in hell I will buy this game. Rock Band will still be releasing more Metallica and that's the only way they will see my money.
Vcize @ Dec 19th 2008 4:10PM
I doubt Rock Band will be releasing any more Metallica...
oolz @ Dec 19th 2008 4:22PM
why would you doubt it? They licensed 18 songs well before any of this happened and some track names have been found in recent dlc releases.. Oh and their own comments that this game (GH:M) doesn't alter their plans one bit..
tmacairjordan87 @ Dec 19th 2008 5:31PM
Why do people keep saying this? They haven't put out any Metallica DLC in a year and a month (hint: since the rock band franchise was freakin started).
DEEZNUTZ @ Dec 19th 2008 4:07PM
Wow, ANOTHER GH game? Well wake me up when you have GH:NIRVANA or GH:CREED... just so I could laugh at how many people buy them.
B3astofthe3ast @ Dec 19th 2008 4:08PM
I will love HMX forever if they manage to release Master of Puppets the same week this comes out.

Mike T. @ Dec 19th 2008 4:56PM
I'm sorry, but your opinion is wrong.
jorojoserojas @ Dec 19th 2008 4:58PM
I haven't played either of the two, so I couldn't tell you if that's the case.
jorojoserojas @ Dec 19th 2008 4:59PM
I CAN tell you, though, that the music of the Beatles is still honored and cherished to this day.
In 20 years, can Metallica say the same?
Can Metallica say the same NOW?
Martin @ Dec 19th 2008 5:32PM
I CAN tell you, though, that the music of the Beatles is still honored and cherished [by some] to this day.
Fixed to reflect more of an opinion tone, rather than one stating a fact.
tmacairjordan87 @ Dec 19th 2008 5:33PM
Yes they can, because believe it or not the internet doesn't make up the world. They are still easily one of the biggest bands in the world, and draw in massive crowds everywhere they go.
Hell 2 of the biggest rock stations here in Florida have a show where they play 3 metallica songs in a row every weeknight.
Viol8tor Mode @ Dec 19th 2008 7:47PM
Im with you on this one Cono1234:
To me, playing these "Band/Instrument Simulator" type games, (either be rock band or GH) is all about rocking hard, getting me pumped, and being loud.
With that said, i much rather gather up 3 friends and jam out to the "Black Album" rather than any Beatles album. It's not even a question of taste or which band has the better song catalog.
Richlough @ Dec 19th 2008 5:02PM
I think they want to keep track of how many hits the trailer gets that's why it's on thier site .
Greed .
jackal @ Dec 19th 2008 5:07PM
I haven't been following the game so maybe someone can enlighten me on the following: are most of GH:M's soundtracks from a time when they were good, or are they mostly from the present where the band collectively kicked its alcohol and drug problems only to then (musically) suck more cock than a creation born from the fusion of Lance Bass, Boy George, and Clay Aiken? I was once a Metallica fan. Load was barely tolerable, Re-Load was crap, and, with the release of St. Anger, I banished my CDs to the darkest corner of my closet, wrapped in a small trash bag. I haven't listened to a Metallica song since. Ozzy (he may not be as good as he once was, but he's still infinitely better than Metallica at this point in time) and Iron Maiden ftw.
